Brilliant. You explained this all so well for those who want to lean in the organic direction and why we should do it. I bought alfalfa meal and azomite. What is the application rate for alfalfa meal per 1000 sq. ft. to encourage root growth?
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
Whenever I use alfalfa meal I just use it as a fertilizer so I dose it as if I'm applying any other Nitroigen boost. At only 2.5% N you can drop a lot at once if you like. For instance 20lbs of alfalfa meal gives you roughly 0.5 lbs N per 1000 square foot and a ton of good organic matter (OM). As for the potency of the triacontinol in alfalfa meal, I'm not sure but I do know it's one of the most potent natural sources of the stuff you can get. Obviously, you can buy fancy/expensive triacontinal-only products but I just assume that if I use alfalfa meal regularly as part of my fertilization and OM topdressing programs then I'm getting plenty on triacontinol that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Thanks so much!! I already put out 12 lbs. and was wondering how much more to put out. I ground down alfalfa pellets to meal since 50 Lb. bag of 1/4" pellets is 20$. @@TurfMechanic A great way to add organic matter to the soil like you teach us. !

Honest question: How do you have grass under your swings? I seed those spots in the spring and fall, but it dies out so quick from my kids dragging their feet.
@TurfMechanic2 жыл бұрын
I move the location of the swings incrementally every month or so. All it takes is a slight adjustment of 1-2 feet in most directions and then once a year we completely change the swing location in the yard. The kids drag their feet here too so when I see it starting to sink down or thin out I move it a bit, everything recovers on its own doing this.

Would you recommend Lawn Box for the entire season? What are you’re thoughts? Thanks
@TurfMechanic2 жыл бұрын
I would, it's expensive especially if you have a huge lawn but it's really complete. Only a little light on micronutrients and kelp. Southern ag essential minors (on domyown website) is a good granular supplement to it as is any kelp product.
@SleepInnOK4172 жыл бұрын
Thank you 🙏🏾 . That’s gonna help me. I think I’m going to take this route with the micro addition. Side question, how do you keep your hair so slick and wet in the videos? You look fresh like you just came out the shower! Lol😊

You conned me, my lawn stinks... JUST KIDDING BRIAN! 😂😅 My lawn is responding amazingly to organic inputs. I started making decent compost last year, by trial and error, but it wasn't good compost. Now I am making good compost, and making biochar, also I made amazing Fish Hydrolysate. My Kentucky bluegrass is taking over the old lawn, and if I pull weeds? It fills in the holes within weeks, and we are still early/mid spring in Canada. I appreciate ya Sir. Already have more bluegrass from the same source ready for late August. This time I am gonna overseed properly, using your method. Had to comment... I just love you saying "TRUST ME ITS GONNA PAY OFF" & I do the same to my skeptical neighbours. Crazy lawn guys will always have the edge tho, we should he watching CSI, or Aquaman or Survivor, but we are watching people talk about grass and soil food web, & weird icky stuff that is also hard work if they hate it. Lol 🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻🏭⚡💖🙏🍁♻️🍁

I'm excited to transform a new property...and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sad about leaving what we've already built behind. Do you like organic compost to spread after overseeding this time of the year. September/ October time frame
@Piccolo_Re2 жыл бұрын
I’m trying to stick with the organic plan, but my yard has been suffering from fungus constantly and my fine fescues are always dead or yellow. It seems like the organic route made my yard worse. But it’s only been 2 months on it, so I’ll have to see what it’s like near the end of October/November.
@TurfMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Some people have a hard transition period, some fungus is frequently remedied by fast growth, i even have a video on this from two years ago. That just masks the problem though, grow it out with fast acting N is a common solution but that defeats the purpose of going the slower natural route. With fines they don't like heavy nitrogen and they don't need tons of water either especially since they naturally thrive in shade. They can be cut quite low so you could try scalping the fine as low as possible and discarding the debris then letting the soil dry out a bit while it slowly grows back to length. Fines will hold color longer into the dormant season from my experience so you've got time.

To your point about nitrogen not as important in organics, TTTF is recommended to get 3-4 lbs of N / year / K sqft. If that's for synthetics how much you recommend for an organic program?
@TurfMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Good question, before I answer think about what a nearby lawn in your neighborhood looks like, you know the ones where the homeowner waters it but never fertilizes it. It's probably thin but pale green. Not terrible looking from far away but it's obviously not the worst lawn on the block. That's what 0lbs nitrogen and fert looks like. If you add any nitrogen via organics then it will improve and the more you add the better it will look. I run PR and KBG mostly and those types can easily take 4lb too but last year I put 3lb or so and this year has been closer to 2 lb by the time im done applying fert tomorrow. It's the extra stuff that helps the lawn look its best even with lower N inputs. It's also why my main lawn holds up over 100 degree full sun days in July without wilting on low water and it's why I don't ever worry about lawn fungus. If I was running a full tttf lawn I'd aim to decrease N inputs a little at a time until you feel that you need more. My guess is with regular organic practices, good watering, and good additional additives applied throughout the year I bet 2lb is a totally reasonable target...if not less. Not a recommendation but I think it's a reasonable target. Again the more you apply the better things will look so your own personal tastes for appearance will also come into play.

Hit 44 degrees this morning. This is my first season growing. I planted Tall Fescue, KBG, PR, 5 days ago. Hope i'll be okay. 57.2 right now. I skipped soil misting on the seedlings tonight because I felt like it will get too cold. I've also been waiting for it to get above 55 to water. Do you think that's a bad move?

You are completely right; after two+ years I'm still learning how to present information better. In general it's hard to make information universal for all viewers because there's so many factors that come into play on an individual basis and because so many people have differences in their values. This video was actually my attempt to make a fall fertilization explaination video for different audiences. There are four others that came out on the same day for people with different needs and values. Synthetics, people that overseed, etc. Today I released one for warm season grass types but even still there's so much to be said. I'd love to be able to just sit and chat with people like you one-on-one; I'm excited when I hear someone like yourself itching to get into natural lawn care. Anyway, most of my videos have the natural slant towards them so go through the archives a little at a time and you'll pick it all up before you know it.
