You are correct about the reason one looks better than the other. The thing you don't mention is that the camera sensor size also matters. The camera adaptor has to match the camera. I've seen the type of mismatch that you show. The microscopes you show look the same as many brands that have been around for decades under names like Fisher and Unico. If you ever decide to step up to a high end microscope, get a Leica stereo with the Leica IC90E camera. The camera is a module that is completely matched to the microscope and attaches between the body and the head instead of attaching to a trinoc.

Rainbow effect is chromatic aberration, caused by the refractive index of the glass being slightly different for different colors. There's probably also spherical or coma aberration in those other lenses as well.

Looks like the ""bad scope" produces coma (or "comatic aberration") and strangely it is observed across full field of view. While in perfectly aligned optical system it should not be noticeablein the center of an image and should increase towards the sides of FOV. How the image looks if you look into eyepieces? If its sharp and perfect - then maybe the "beam slitter" part of the microscope is terribly misaligned, it may have one or few mirrors/prisms mounted with an offset. But if with your eyes you see the same image defects - than I would check the mounting of objective length (may be tilted). Feels like an optical system center-line is somewhere close to upper right corner.

Cheaper optics don’t coat their lenses, using poor precision ground lenses and bare glass or worse plastic! The coatings reduce differences of the bending of light of different wavelengths! That is the distortion you are describing Louis! The term is Chromic Aberration, a failure to focus all wavelengths from an image to the same point. This causes the blurriness and rainbow effects you mention. This what the extra $10 fixes by using Coated Lenses that bent all visible wavelengths of light the same no matter what color the light is.In the days of film cameras, coated, precision ground glass lense and mirror optics were what people spent the big money on in the days of the SLR Cameras with separate Camera bodies and interchangeable Bayonet style camera lenses. For more see link below: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration?wprov=sfti1
