Great live Cas. Here is a fairly recent quote directly from my adult single son. I was Godsmacked when he said it. He's the king of tough love. "Mom, you're not getting any younger neither is Dad. Why are you saving this? You don't need it. I don't want it. Get rid of it or I'll have to...and I will. It's not fair to leave me with this job" I started my response to him with..."But Nick" He promptly left the room. Gotta love him.

I watch this and this helped me to throw out spiral notebooks worth of my notes. Anytime something comes to mind I just write it in the closest notebook, thinking it later I’ll put it in something organized. I never do. I’ve got dozens of these spiral notebooks filled with my brains rantings. And I was going through them slowly to figure out if I wanted to keep each page and where I was gonna put those pages or if I was gonna have to rewrite them. And I realized, Cass would tell me that I have not used these journals in three years and my life was fine, so I do not need whatever written in these journals. There’s no need to even go through them. So I threw them out!

The day I packed up and donated three sets of “grandma china” I had inherited (because no one else in the family wanted it on either my or my husband’s side) was the day I started taking back my house!! It was so liberating!!! My husband and I were the first in our generation to get married (my brother and BIL were neither one married and settled until years later) and so we became the dumping ground for all the things from our grandparents. My mother and MIL both gave us all the things they didn’t want - furniture, china, Knick knacks, art etc. Before we knew it, my husband and I had a house full of grandma things and our home was not our own. Out of a sense of guilt and obligation we took it all. Even a gigantic doll house. It was RIDICULOUS. Donating those sets of china freed me from it - I began getting rid of that stuff like crazy and I finally started having the house I wanted. There are still a few lingering things around that my husband’s parents convinced him are “worth a bunch of money” that he won’t let go of, but it’s 90% all gone. It’s amazing.

My Aunt who was 90 years, complained one day to me that she did not have room in her chest of drawers to even put her everyday pants and shirts or underwear. I looked in the chest and all deep and full to the brim, had about 150 old belts from dresses, long gone, tiny little balls of old leftover yarn, her MIL’s old hearing aide, and the same MIL’ old false teeth!!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 No wonder she had no room in her drawers for her clothes. She got mad at me for trying to talk her into getting rid of all this junk, but finally let go, and we discarded , 2 big bags of pure junk. She was really happy when she was able to place her clothes, ( neatly) in to those drawers. And loved me even more🤣🤣

My mom retired in Feb 2017 & started to declutter. It was super hard as she had her mothers things as well - she passed away in 2001. 😢. When the pandemic hit, she started working harder to get rid of stuff so I didn’t have to deal with it when she died, that was a blessing for me. I tried to help in Oct 2022 when she got out of the hospital and she refused to get rid of anything. My mom passed in March 2023 & I spent weeks cleaning out her apt, deciding what to keep that I wanted & what to donate/toss. It was hard & I was in tears every day but it had to be done. I got rid of 95%of what was in there, I have a storage unit small on 5x11 with the items/furniture I wanted to keep, plus the paperwork I needed in case of estate audit. Prayers that doesn’t happen. When I came home from that trip, I started working on my house, have taken 2 trips to donate & have a pile on my dining room table right now that will be going this weekend with more stuff. It’s hard & it’s emotional up to keep my sanity I have to do it. ❤❤❤❤

I do encourage people to pass china and excess glassware along to children who are setting up a new home - your children, children in your extended family - friends of your grandchildren - give stuff to people who will be excited to receive it, don't save things for when you die. Find new homes for your good stuff while you are alive to see the joy on the receivers face.

My grandma recently passed away (99), she lived in the same home for roughly the past 50 years. While cleaning things out, my mom and aunts were blown away with how much junk she had squirreled away in drawers, cupboards, closets, etc. We are talking bills from the 80's, unopened utensils and other kitchen items mixed in with the bills. ALL OF THIS went right into a dumpster. The amazing thing is that no one knew this stuff existed because their home had gobs and gobs of storage compartments. The house always looked so immaculate!

I was helping my Mom’s family clean up some of the excess that my Grandmother had kept for years while my Grandmother was in the hospital. She lived in a small two bedroom house. We were trying to get things cleaned out enough for someone to stay with her when she first came home. I was going through one of her dresser drawers and I found a loaded gun. None of the family had an idea she had a gun. So be careful when you get stuck cleaning out someone else’s things. You never know what you might find.

We are starting to get a hold of our horrible clutter for past 40 years. If we can do it so can everyone!

I got a notice in the mail for a donations center that benefits veterans services and picks up at my house!! They picked up a ton last week and i scheduled another pick up for this week. I am super proud of myself. I am a butterfly that LOVES any kind of box, basket or bag but i decided to reduce the number of "containers" so i have less room to put my random crap in so i get rid of my random crap.😂 Today i did my bathroom closet and All the drawers, under the bathroom sink . I was so happy....2 big black trash bage of crap plus a whole white trash bag of donations. I even moped and changed my shower curtain liner and CLEANED my tub and tile!!! Y'all i have an electric mop but it doesnt fit behind the toilet...so i went and bought a mop and moped!!! Then it went to the laundry room and did the laundry, cleaned out the cabinets, another big black trash bag of trash! My bathroom is clean and organized. I am down for being ruthless!!! I am feeling better with every single bag that is leaving my house whether it be trash or donations doesnt matter.

I just donated my Precious Moments figurines. 3 large Rubbermaid containers full. They were all birthday, Christmas and even a wedding gift from one special friend over the last 35 years, but are not my style anymore and have been stored away for 2 decades. I've agonized over what to do with them. I kept just two that best represent our deep friendship and gifted the rest to the owner of a small local antique store that I've become friends with. Told her sell them, raffle them, give them to another customer who collects them... whatever helped her small business.

Something l have been trying to do is reduce some categories to one container. I think Peter Walsh did that on one of his shows for sentimental items and Dawn does this too. (I wish I was joking and yes I clearly need therapy lol). But my major problem is I've always wanted to keep all my stuff "brand new". I don't want to actually use my stuff because I might break it or get it dirty, etc. And yes I know it doesn't make ANY sense, because WHY even have something if I'm not going to use it.......but I've been doing some major work on myself, training my brain, and trying to change my mindset around stuff. So thank you. I need the tough love. NO MORE EXCUSES!!

Abut the sheet sets, get rid of the colors, get white sheets so you can bleach them when people are throwing up. You can also see how often you need to wash the pillow cases. hi from Vancouver, I knew a family who went from a 5 bedroom to a three. .. they took all their family photos, their favorite clothes and needed dishes, everything that was used daily. Basic things ..and after three years they took everything to the thrift without even looking inside the boxes. the garage was full up to the top and there was no room for the two cars. so they said if I haven't used it for 3 years its gone. Can you imagine one day everything in your garage gone in one morning. They never looked back, nor missed anything. the husband was that type of guy...We dont use it, we dont need it, its gone. ..he took control and the family listened to his headship. He wasn't mean just firm and precise.

Cass, 1st of all, I'm listening to this after the fact, but you did a great job of holding everyone's hands to the fire. 😂 As a B'Boomer who's commented before, I've been wanting to throw this idea out for you to remind people to also keep on top of. So it's about hanging on to little bits and pieces and parts of things that we think we might need even though we used the major part of it . To clarify, I mean, suppose you use some yarn and you had about 15% left ,You save it ! Maybe it's leftover wood or beat up towels or its little bits of wire, string, shelf liner. Etc that you throw into a containers thinking you'll use up, but in fact it sits there forever. This type of stuff just ends up becoming piles of debris mixed-up in your containers, drawers, or closets .... Chuck it, I Say !! 🏖Kj in Tampa Bay😊

Maybe 10 or 15 boxes total. I one day decided that my children don't deserve for me to leave my mess for them. My children are the same way as your son. I asked my children if they wanted anything from their childhood or anything of mine. They said no. My son has 1 item from his childhood and it's in my house because he uses it when he stays the night with me. It's his comforter from when he was 3yrs old. It's terribly worn but he won't let go. I figure it's 1 item. He'll eventually get rid of it when the inside falls out.

I've paused this video multiple times to tidy and declutter my kitchen cupboards and drawers, pull items out of bins I know I've been keeping and shuffling out of fear, and...this is so ridiculous but I finally just threw away some scrunchies my mom handed off to me that I used to use in high school -- and teared up 🙈 Been feeling guilty knowing no one would want them (including me because I don't use scrunchies anymore) but they are still usable. Well now they are in the trash and I will never think about them again. Tearing up again as I share this with everyone and feeling so outrageously silly for it, but I also feel SO encouraged by Cas and everyone else who has been there or is right there with me feeling emotions about meaningless crap ❤️ Put some paint on my face and give me a sword, I'm about to win this war! 🔥💪🏻

Cas, I needed this! After 2+ yrs of decluttering (thanks to you, Dawn, and Dana) I let things creep back in the last few months and I was so discouraged to start over. Especially after a tense conversation with a family member who found out I declutter all the toys they gave my child. But you're right, I do not want to be a slave to things!! And I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but I can't spare my family's peace for the feelings of everyone who gives us things... In fact after this I threw away a perfectly good mason jar because someone drank milk in it and it had a milk ring around the bottom that I couldn't reach with my dish scrubber and I said you know what I'm not doing this! I'm not drawing this out and "soaking" this cup and feeling like a failure for forgetting it on the counter and having to come back and wash it in three days. It is a perfectly good glass jar and I have so many of these down in my basement that if a great depression hit then even using this one jar for canning food isn't going to save me anyways, it's going. I felt like such a REBEL. A FREE Rebel. Lol. Thanks Cas.

I started a few years ago when my mom died and we were going through her stuff. My sisters didn't want a few things that I felt were important to me like her dishes that we only used during holidays. I decided to make them my every day dishes and I even put them in the dishwasher which is a big no no for this type of dish. I realized that if my nieces didn't want them then my sons certainly wouldn't. I didn't have to go out to buy new dishes so I feel I saved money and if they break then oh well, no big deal. Peace.
