It is helpful to see you working on your neglected zones because it shows that anything can get out of control and minimizing those things is a day to day decision and not a “makeover” that stays perfect forever with no effort.

My epiphany moment was realizing our "storage room" was big enough to be used for something better! I couldn't believe we'd dedicated that square footage to storing junk. So we got rid of 95% and now my husband has a 3D printing studio. 🤩

Having just been diagnosed with ADHD at age 64, I realize that even though I have trouble keeping things organized, clutter makes me more anxious and less able to focus on what I need to accomplish. I cleaned out under my sink while you cleaned your closet and just tossed a bag of stuff that was part of my fantasy self. Thank you for the encouragement. I may be an older empty nester and not that busy, but the need for inventory reduction remains the same!

I am 73 with ADHD and find that I need to accommodate for the way my brain works. Otherwise the anxiety and guilt get me and I come to a complete stop. I recently found a couple of videos on KZbin about organizing the home for the ADHD brain. If I could remember exactly where they were I’d link them but, we’ll, you know.

I had such a hard time trying to find an appropriate way to "dispose" of my wedding dress. I did not want it ending up sweeping the floor of Goodwill, but I also have no need to keep it. I have a great marriage and am not sentimental about my dress. I was SO happy to find something like Angel Gowns right in my neighborhood. I feel SO blessed that my beautiful dress was transformed to help a grieving family in that very small way.

We had a similar space under our staircase when we first moved into our house. Our way of dealing with no clutter there is we hired someone to close that area off with drywall. That resulted in a nice, smooth wall and zero chance to store clutter. Living in California helps keep clutter down because houses typically don’t have basements and our attic doesn’t have a floor to walk on except for a tiny area where the central air conditioner rests. Our goal is to never go into the attic except for maintenance of the HVAC unit. At 62, I already went through Swedish Death Cleaning, which is such a good feeling. We can park both our cars in the garage, the 20-something year-olds got rid of the toys they used as children, as well as exercise equipment they no longer used. We also don’t have any excess furniture so the house has plenty of space for chi to flow freely.

And now i use delivery 99.9% of the time, so having more things on hand for convenience doesn’t make sense. I try to have 1 extra of things like ketchup, mustard, horseradish, mayonnaise…coffee, but I don’t have duplicates of soup, or many other items because i can purchase every week. My freezer actually has room because I make myself use up the food before i buy again. That makes for less waste because things aren’t lost in the freezer and then too old to eat.

Hey Dawn! I've never commented on your channel before because I wasn't sure that I had anything of value to add. I love the way you are living a minimal lifestyle, and you have encouraged me in my decluttering/minimalizing endeavors. I just thought of something as I watched you clean out the closet in the boys' room. I once saw in a magazine that someone drew with a sharpie marker on their plywood floor to make it look like wood planks and nails. They lightly stained and did a polyurethane on it and it was a beautiful fake wood plank floor. Maybe that would be a fun project for you and the boys to do in that closet! I truly love your helpful comments to your viewers. I subscribed a long time ago. You are a blessing! God bless you!

A few years ago someome's video described "the high school method". Don't expect the multiple household projects including decluttering to be finished in one attempt. Set the alarm each time for 50 minutes, take a break and rotate to another project, like moving from class to class for different subjects. At the end of the semester students had learned multiple subjects. Applying this method, over time multiple home projects and decluttering will see lasting results.😊

I've actually heard the opposite (at a homeschool convention) about books and kids. That if you have a house full of books, it's an equivalent impact on the children's education as if the parents have post-graduate degrees. I think that concept does have merit, but I would think that quality over quantity is more important. Charlotte Mason warns against "twaddle," but is an advocate for "preparing a feast of ideas" as well.

Sewing/craft room? My sewing room looks like a bomb site right now. My adult daughter was helping me with it when I began having TIA symptoms. I ended up in the hospital having a blood clot removed from my carotid artery, just in time. Then I got an infection and had to have surgery to clean out the site. I had just regained most of my strength when I fell on concrete and ended up with a deep bone bruise. More weakness from having to be off that leg. I cannot make it up our stairs to my room to work so in the meantime I have just been having fabric hauled up there but it doesn’t get put away. Perhaps one day. It bothers me to think of it being in such horrible shape and not being able to sew until it is under control.

I'm hoping I can get to it after we get our homemade Christmas cards done & mailed out, which should be in 2 wks. So after Thanksgiving, I should be able to start. 😊

Good afternoon - one of the things I would emphasize that you said was to not feel bad if you can't donate and rehome and and , that just moves your stuff from one place to another pile. Once we as a family got past that, things in our home became easier to minimalize! In turn it has also made us very mindful of what we are brining in and it has cut down our 'shopping' significantly. Great video, I love that Corbin was helping. Such a great life skill and fun one on one time. Edit to add, while listening/watching took out a black trash bag of stuff out of the laundry/ storage space.

One thing I like about using the bins you use inside the shelving is that the bins become drawers, which make all the shelves SO much more accessible. I'm 66, and getting down on the floor to reach way to the back of a shelf is something I can't easily do anymore. It's so much easier to grab the front of the bin, pull it out a little ways, see everything on the shelf, and push it back in when you're done. All my lower shelves have bins now, including kitchen cupboards and under sink cabinets. Makes the house much more liveable.

Having her help was a MAJOR motivator to keep going for as long as we did, and even more importantly - to get started. Best $50 ever!

Hi Corbin! 😄👋 It's always so fun to see your great kids pop in! And thank you for this video (and ALL your videos). I think the reason why I like the long ones the most is just because you are SO encouraging, Dawn, it is reassuring and hopeful just to hear your voice. 😄 I know that may sound weird, but, truly, I believe God has gifted you with that exhorting, encouraging nature that comes alongside people and just makes them feel inspired, hopeful, and like "Yes, I actually CAN do this!" Thank you for sharing His gift to you with the rest of us. God bless you and your family! 💖🤗💖

Dawn, Thank you so much for your channel. I recently discovered it! I have been trying to Organize our home for a while, and now, I think I can finally succeed. The concepts that have helped me move forward are: 1. Knowing that I have TOO MUCH INVENTORY. 2. 5 minute time blocks work. 3. Decluttering is a continuous process, not just spring cleaning. 4. Be willing to part with something you paid good money for. (The space and peace is far more valuable) P.s. I love your kids, and Corbin has won my heart ❤️❤️❤️ Please keep creating this content!❤️👍🎉

Wow. It's amazing how much bigger the space looks by visually unifying the walls & the shelves with the same white tint. Now, the shelves have more of a built-in look. Before, the space looked cramped just because the shelves didn't match the wall color. Taking the monochrome theme even further with the rugs makes the space look finished. I'm feeling inspired now to declutter the three closets in my home.

I love the real time...and thinking out loud... to help teach that key thought process component!!! I love how close you are with your children...and the thinking out loud process is coming through your children too...I love that!! That helps us all make better decision making in the present and future!! Such a great video!!!

I found Cass when she had her TV show. Learning my organization style was a HUGE game-changer! Then she mentioned you and at first I thought - "I could NEVER be minimal." But for me you were like a train wreck - in a good way. I couldn't take my eyes off even though I couldn't imagine being able to be so minimal. Now I'm trying so hard to get rid of stuff and it's SOOooo hard, and I'm being suffocated by STUFF!!! So just know, if you guys ever vacation out in CA, and need content - I'm a gold mine for you! You have a standing invitation to come and help me let stuff GO! My eventual goal is to get about 90% of our stuff out of the house. We've been accumulating for 25 years and on top of that is all the stuff I got when my parents passed. At the moment I'm at a standstill. Something I've discovered, though. Each time I attack an area, I'm able to let go of more. It's like the first time or two I uncover things I haven't seen in YEARS, and it stirs up too many emotions. But after seeing it a couple of times more I realize I don't need the object any longer. A photo of it brings back the memories, and I'm able to let it go. Thank you for all you do. I hope I can get close to the point you are in the next five years. God bless!

Thanks Dawn! Man your son reminds me soooo much of our second son when we first moved here 6 years ago (he was going on 9). He now is over 6 ft. 200 lbs and looks and acts like he is 18. It goes so fast!!! We are still homeschooling him with our 3 and 5 year old this year. We have six children (oldest is 16) and I have VERY little bandwidth for anything extra. Your videos have been sooo helpful. I’m almost marking the year mark of major major major decluttering and minimizing. I know how fast 6 years go and how children don’t seem like children anymore that fast. This was a huge sober reality of that seeing your son and how he reminded me of that age that is gone in a flash. I really want these next 6 years to not have weekends wasted on managing and organizing stuff!!!

1. I love your videos. They are really relatable. They're really inspirational and help get me moving. I often pause in the middle to go do a 10-minute declutter and than come back to it. 2. The Clutterbug categories are super helpful, of course now I got to figure out how to organize for a ladybug (me) and a butterfly (my spouse). Wish me luck. 3. I love that you respect you kids wish to not be in your videos.

two beginning tips that still work for me three years in: 1. make it "10 mins better." 2. keep a donate box/bag in every room. when they are full they go to the car; I make a trip to the donation center about once a month. these two tips are working without overwhelming me. ☮

Dawn, I love seeing your kids work along side you. When I was a kid I had to do all the cleaning, cooking and babysitting in my house. So when I had children of my own I didn’t have them do anything. Now as adults they have too much stuff and can’t manage their homes. I feel very guilty about it now. I wish I had them work with me as a family so they would have been more prepared for taking care of their own space. Great job Corbin!

Good job you guys! It look so much better! I watched a decorator yesterday who recommend one of those electronic picture frames which can be set up to show a different picture as often as you choose. They are better than they used to be and you get to display many, many pictures without taking up wall or shelf space. (She was showing examples of her clients' homes (with their permission) to use as examples for better decorating.)

Just an idea... Since you have one shelf that is basically empty you could use the top 3 shelves for games, including 1 of the 3 for the card games to go. Then the bottom 3 shelves could be your books etc. Love how everything turned out and I really like the idea you had to put hooks up for the boys shirts! The rugs definitely make it cozy! You and your son made a great team.

Wow… as a librarian and former school teacher, I was fascinated by your reasoning to keep a small portion of books. It makes sense, but there is a huge part of me that would struggle with that because books are my life right now. I’ve always encouraged families to have an “at home library”. So, thanks for sharing your perspective.
