I can’t even begin to explain how much I appreciate the “practical” progress of organization. Understanding a space and creating functionality is equally as pretty-to me-as traditional decorating. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to seeing how you guys make the space work for you as you live in it more!

That was my first thought - there's no space! But I think if she gets a China cabinet in the dining space (I didn't go back to see the room again - I know it's narrow, but think there was room at one end??) and a tall armoire in the family room where the two big paintings are or even a roomy buffet in that spot that she can hang artwork over and put a lamp (or two) on, that should free up some storage. I should have looked before typing this, but there may even be space at the end of the kitchen (where the door is) to put a baker's rack that she could store dishes or serving pieces or appliances on... Even a small pie safe sort of cabinet would hold and hide appliances.

Figuring out your kitchen in a new house is a game of “let’s see how this works”. It’s completely different from when you reno a kitchen to work for you(which we just did). I am loving watch you unpack and decorate this new house and beyond excited for the podcast!! More Macenna works for me

For a temp solution, on Amazon they have these little circle stickers that are raised like bumps. You put them in the corners on the inside of drawers and cabinets so when you close them it makes it a lot quieter! Instead of the wood hitting wood when they close it’s wood hitting the little bump stickers and it made a big difference in our kitchen for noise! Also a lil WD-40 on the hinges I believe would help with some squeakiness!

I've simplified a lot in the past few years and tried to get rid of extra stuff and it feels so much better to me. I'm not a minimalist but when I look at some minimalist houses it makes me feel so peaceful. Benita Larsson on YT had such a relaxing home before her recent move.

what are your thoughts on romeo’s office being downstairs with the laundry machine and the primary bedroom being in the current guest room? it seems to make more sense and be more private. maybe since that room is so large it could eventually be renovated to have an on suite bathroom! 🤍

I’m a home organizer for 27 years. When you have multiple of anything:cereal boxes etc. instead of stacking the boxes next to each other as MaCenna place then. Instead put 2nd (or newer box) begin the one in front as you would put soda cans in the fridge. It gives you more visibility & you’ll know what you have & how many. If your knife rack is shifting fold a old kitchen towel & place it in the back of the drawer to brace it.

MaCenna getting a new house is like when your fav tv show launches a new season 🥳 I was thinking the "breakfast nook" space you weren't sure what to do with may be a good spot to put a stand alone pantry situation. Like a wardrobe but for your kitchen?

The best advice I’ve heard for organizing your kitchen is to imagine you are cooking a meal and think about where to put things so the process goes smoothly. Also, use lazy Susans and shelf risers to maximize the use of your cupboard space. I’d give serious thought to getting a freestanding pantry cupboard to put against that blank wall. It will give you lots more storage space, which you will need when you grow your family.

If you have empty wall space, perhaps you can do plate rails for your plates to save room in your cabinets! Like Gwyneth Paltrow did in her kitchen in her AD tour! I also really like the idea of hanging your cutting boards. Very European.

When you do remodel the kitchen, open it up to the dining room and incorporate a larger space with island seating, lots of storage. Your living room is large enough to fit a dining table, just move the sofa closer to the fireplace. Or use the front room as foyer/ dining because how often do you use a formal dining room? It could hold a big table with flower vase and books that converts to dining.
@LumunGames

This is so fun, watching you settle into your new house! Congratulations on the purchase. Since you don't really have anything much to go in the 'front' living room area, maybe it would be nice to set up your dining room there. Then when you reno the kitchen, you could take out the wall between the existing kitchen and that dining area back there, and make one large kitchen with a nice over-sized island and a walk-in pantry. It would probably still leave lots of room for a small breakfast nook at the windows overlooking the backyard/pool. Just a thought.

I live in a small cottage with very little space and no storage. My appliances are all kept in an antique cabinet in my living room right by the kitchen door. It’s so close it makes zero difference and I don’t have them cluttering up the place. Now if I can just figure out a way to keep all my decor pieces without looking like I have 3 times the amount I need I’ll be good. 🤣 I’m no minimalist that’s for sure.

I’m childishly proud that “my” MaCenna bought ON sneakers. I’m from Zurich in Switzerland, where they were created. It’s also a company with a great philosophy. Btw, these are poultry shears. To cut off wings and legs and open the ribs. Very helpful when butterflying a chicken, or after cooking to portion the meat. They cut through the bones very well.

MaCenna, I was tired of giving up space in the kitchen cabinets for appliances I need, but use rarely. So I had my husband put up a 5-shelf shelving unit in the garage but just off the kitchen & out the door that goes from the house into the garage. I call it my appliance pantry & it has the Nesco turkey roaster, Insta-Pot, my crock pots, water bath canner, canning jars, the deep fryer, my enamel roasting pan, & a few other things. To keep all that clean I found a cover on Amazon for it made from heavy duty clear vinyl & it has great zippers on it for very easy access. I always rinse things off but the cover completely envelopes the shelves & keeps it from getting dirty/dusty in the garage. It freed up so much space inside! You might consider doing the same for some of your larger or seldom used appliances. ps-The house is darling! Congrats to you & Romeo! 👏🏻👏🏻

Just a couple suggestions with the organization-- I would move Kinsley's stuff to maybe a cabinet or dresser somewhere like in the guest room or Romeo's office since real estate is limited in the kitchen! I'd also try and put the lid for the pots and pans elsewhere, I feel like that big drawer just for lids is a missed opportunity! Not sure if there is room for a hutch or kind of island with storage off to the side under the windows, but might be a good option to fill in that space, add some extra storage & of course bring in a piece of vintage furniture!

Loving this series! I would consider: making the dining room into a pantry/storage room, and make the formal living room at the front entrance of the house into the dining room. It creates storage for larger appliances, food, boxes, dog food, baby food, etc. and is highly functional.

You've got space above the cabinets, you could find a pretty basket with a lid (maybe a picnic basket) and put all the stuff you don't use in a basket on top if the cabinets. Of course once, eventually, you do the built in bookshelves with storage underneath in the living room that's going to be perfect for holding that stuff.

I highly recommend that you use your wine glasses for everyday use. Why not be fancy with your water? Also what do you think about a bakers type rack in that open wall for your appliances? I love the idea of the dry goods in those jars in that shallow cabinet but I recommend labeling your jars or cutting the original labels and taking on the jars, this way you'll have any directions you may need. Great job on the knife organizer!.

Put your plates in the drawer by your dishwasher; that's where we keep ours and it's easier. Hang up the things you can, like the bag dispenser. Don't go putting dishes in the cabinets that you don't use; if you keep with just placing your basics it'll be so much easier.

We also just bought a home in SoCal in September and I swear I am still rearranging my kitchen as I learn what's working or not. I like your idea of turning that shallow cabinet into a dry good pantry. Here in the UK we mostly have to keep all our food and pantry stuff in the kitchen unless you are rich enough to buy a huge house with extra room, we do have utility rooms but most of us don’t and have to keep our washing machine, dryer and the liquids and big bulky boxes for powders in the kitchen cupboards too. I’m so jealous of the space American houses have.

I love your logic regarding how you packing the kitchen. Functional and practical. I would do what you mentioned at the end with the dry goods in jars, and in that larger cabinet next to the range hood I’ll do plates and the bowls ( plates at the top and bowls at the bottom). This would free more space for pantry items on the other side. So where you have the plates you can still do oils and taller cooking things and now it would be next to the other pantry things. I’m sure once you get your dinning room sorted you will add a server (china cabinet) to put your fancy dishes and glasses. I’m excited for you and it’s all coming together. Good luck and hope you guys have a wonderful week

As someone that cooks, it’s a bit easier to have your spices where you can see them. I noticed you didn’t have much in the cabinet to the left of the stove. Maybe invest in a spice riser and put them there so you can see them all. I know you do hello fresh a lot but maybe for those meals you do cook? I LOVE the idea of the cutting boards on the wall for decor and then it becomes pretty and practical to store them! ❤

You have really pretty pots and pans. You could get a rod and hooks and hang them on your wall instead. Serves as decor and gives you more cabinet space. That’s what I did in my kitchen it made them so much easier to access. Your new home is beautiful! Congratulations!!

The blank wall - where you were talking about hanging the nice cutting boards - would be a good place for a China cabinet

I like the idea of using that shallow cupboard as a dry goods pantry space. That or a spice cabinet (yes, my spices could probably mostly fill that thing). Plates and bowls and servingware on either side of the range hood, maybe. This video makes me want to get in there and organize with you 😂 Organizing a kitchen is so fun to me.

I get the 'many spices thing'. I have a cupboard full of spices and baking adjacent things like baking soda, sugar, etc.

I do love a practical kitchen, I.e holds everything you need and more! You will find the flow of the kitchen, making it easier to know which cupboards to put what in. When I redesigned my kitchen I had an idea of everything I needed from it and where all my items would go. It made so much difference being able to sign off knowing we had what we needed and 4 years later I still love it.

Hi MaCenna, I think the front room would make a great dining room.with Romeo family being so big for the holidays. The room behind the kitchen would make a great butlers pantry and breakfast nook. Love, love the new house.

I watch your videos. You will do a great job decorating your home with all you have thrifted and own previously. You are so good at picking up items to reuse and give them a new life

You are very right in my experience that kitchens are really hard to organize and likely you will shift things several times before it works maximally. But the process is a bit fun, too.

As you and Romeo use the kitchen you will figure it all out. I have rearranged mine a few times to make it work more efficiently. Rubbing a wax candle on old drawers makes them slide like butter

I got a new kitchen 6 months ago and I am still switching the locations of everything. You have to see how it works, to maximise the layout.

MaCenna for the time being have you thought about floating shelves on the wall in the kitchen for your cutting boards on edges along with your dry goods in your pretty containers and jars, mixed in with a few decor items and pictures. Then you could free up a shelf or two in your cupboards for less attractive kitchen items and small appliances. Just a thought.

I would put the crockpot and blender up high where you put the cereal. The pull out drawers are nice for accessibility too. Will be interesting to see what the final reveal is. Thanks for sharing the process. I love figuring and configuring this kind of stuff.

I think you should use the space above the fridge, maybe build a temporary box to hind the smaller appliances?

Hi girl, I hope Rome did well. I like the lamp you found and rug. It was fun to see you organizing the kitchen and figuring where things are going to go. Thinking what if you made room for an island maybe you could put appliances there. Or see about moving the cereal and putting them there. I love seeing the doggie 🐶 watching you leave. So, cute. Enjoy your new home. Stay safe. Have a good night. God Bless and family too!! Xo 😘
