Steve did well! Just note that he is probably has the most driving skill out of the group, and he fabricates a lot of the modifications on his Highlander. He made his own bash corner plates, and disconnects both his front and rear sway bar. Both the Highlander and Subaru Outback wilderness used momentum, and that takes huge amount of skill and confidence. A mistake while using momentum can lead to vehicle break down, so something to keep in mind. It’s your money, and I want to help you make the best decision with it. For those that aren’t familiar with off roading, slow is a showcase of vehicle capability and fast is a showcase of driver skill/determination. Line choice is a display of skill at either speed. There’s a huge “toyota tax” so if you want a dedicated off-roader with 4 low, you save money by going with Nissan, Ford, Chevy, old Jeeps, etc.

I liked the Passport: 4 inches of lift added, rear sway bars disconnected, but a couple times I thought it was going to roll. The mods are necessary but driving skills are everything. The AWD unibody vehicles looked like they took a beating from the dependency on momentum...probably can't use them on "tough" trails too often. I think a novice like me would be safer in a 4runner with KDSS.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
I get out on a lot of adventures and I've seen so many people roll their vehicles, especially body on frames due to a false sense of security. I had one guy I mentored that drove a 4runner that got ahead of himself and rolled on a steep downhill obstacle (not my trip). You're right about momentum, even with lots of experience you can see the outcome. Many people commenting don't understand that, which is kind of scary. They see momentum speed as equaling "Easy", which is the exact opposite.

I think so. With careful wheel placement you should make it through unscathed. Depending on the year of your Sequoia, you'll have either a Solid Rear Axle or Rear independent suspension. Yeah, with the exception of AWDFAM, I don't see any other vehicles putting the OBW to the test. There's some guy driving through watery mud which isn't much of a test. In this video, rocky shelves are being driven up. I use to run the G015s on my 2015 Forester, they aren't nearly as grippy as the Hankook Dynapro ATMs I ran. I love my Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws on my Passport. In some cases though, it's not the tires that hold the OBW back but rather the CVT, but when more momentum has to be used to overcome something, tires now definitely play a bigger part. Jason is a stud though, he can drive. He has 25 years of wheeling experience, 9 out of 10, anyone else in an outback wilderness isn't doing as good as him.

@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It’s more than just the slight bump in gearing, the torque converter also seems to be beefed up. **which means, it doesn’t stall as easily**. There’s also changes in the suspension which allows for more wheel articulation than the regular Outback XT and to further improve upon that, The owner of the wilderness deleted his front and rear sway bars. A 40% grade is only a 21 degree climb, so careful with the wording. A 40 degree climb would be an 84% grade. Tricky huh? Hehe

@@Keigan884 @Larry Mayfield .. A sway bar connects the left wheel with the right wheel , now jack up one just one wheel, that sway bar link to the other wheel will raise it some too .. if you disconnect the sway bars, each wheel can better follow uneven ground, visualize crossing a ditch at an 45* angle , one side wheel will be pushed up, the other side dropped down , the easier a wheel can do this, and the farther it can do this, the better (sway bars are very beneficial on road, and at high speeds, but a detriment in off road slow speeds)

Really cool video and awesome rigs. I really think the lack of a low gear range is what hurts these crossovers on tough obstacles. I wonder if for example Honda could do something like add a super low 1st gear that is engaged in an offroad setting only and ignored for regular street driving. That would be a pretty cool compromise.
@paulb53903 жыл бұрын
Their biggest problem is a lack of a true 4x4 system. Next is ground clearance. That Passport is lifted 3.5 inches and still has almost 3" less ground clearance than a base Jeep Wrangler
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
@@paulb5390 I actually observe "wheel articulation" as being the single most limiting factor of my Passport. The 20.4:1 crawl ratio makes up for the lack of a low gear T-case (a 100 series Land Cruiser for example, is only geared 30:1) and the higher tech transfer unit in my Passport can almost have it perform like a T-case, but it's not a true locked center diff. The lack of wheel articulation really holds my vehicle back, even though it's flexier than many other AWDs, it's still not good enough. The lack of flex is awesome for on-road though. my 3.5" Passport has 12" of ground clearance at the front skid plate and rear diff. A stock jeep wrangler has 10.8", which is impressive for a stock vehicle, but it's not 3" less minimum ground clearance, at least not at the center line. I'm actually putting together an impromtu "maximum ground clearance" video, about the ground clearance at the rocker panels. My Passport has 15-3/4" and a Jeep Wrangler may very well have be 3 more than that. A stock 4runner is at 17" at the rocker panel.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
smoothies, the Passport does have the low 4,71:1 1st gear with a 4.334 differential. In the Jeep Renegade trailhawk, they call that 4 low. But it would be cool to see it brought down even lower. heck, I'd like to just take a real T-case like in the Jeep Cherokee trailhawk. The gearing is truly impressive at 56:1.

I was very lucky to never break down or get stuck when out in the middle of nowhere with my stock Subaru going places nobody would believe I could get to. Now I am very interested in the Wilderness. Unfortunately I am also interested in the gas guzzling new Bronco (full size) which is more than I can afford and more than I need. But hey, aren't I allowed to have a full blown mid-life crisis every 50 years or so? I like doing more with less, and the gas savings, the room, the skill, etc. But I also like the idea of tearing up there in my brand new Bronco and watching you guys come up from the top as I eat a sandwich and drink a Corona. @JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
@kensai77 the Outback Wilderness did better than previous iterations of a CVT equipped Subaru. I owned a 2015 FXT and no way it would perform at this level. It’s definitely an improvement. I think my FXT had a similar crawl ratio, but had a torque converter that stalled way too easy. Also, the reverse crawl ratio was only 9:1, which meant I couldn’t back up a curb, or even a log to level my car at camp. So, the Outback wilderness is definitely an improvement. Unfortunately, the CVT won’t be going anywhere. This topic has been covered by guys like @mrsubaru1387. Other automatic transmissions just won’t fit in the Subaru global platform architecture. HOWEVER, the dual range manual transmission would fit. It would be cool if Subaru offered it here. It would make sense for the Subaru Wilderness line, just doubt it would happen. We can’t even get a WRX hatchback.

Tyres are 90% of the battle. I’ve been in some high difficulty trails in my outback, but most of ours here seem to be based on steep incline and low traction, not a large amount of left/articulation and ditches. I might been a lift kit and torq locker for that kind of thing, already got decent ground clearance at 9.2 but bumper approach angle leaves more to be desired and can scrape easily, as does rear bumper.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what vehicle you're driving. For example, in deep sand, my 2015 Forester XT would bog down and get stuck if I wasn't at 15 PSI, in my Passport I could drive in deep sand at 35 PSI. A stock 4runner TRD Off-road with Highway terrains would, in many cases, get further than my Passport. IMO, tires in snow would be very important. I wouldn't say 90% of a difference, but it would be up there.

Curious to hear your thoughts Jon. To me it seemed like the highlander driver could have taken anything he wanted up there since he was just so good (and ballsy). As soon as the highlander was taxed to show off its AWD system (like during the drone shot) the driver had to back off. Based on all your videos I’ve seen and maybe a bit of my own Honda bias, it seems like only the passport has an AWD system worth trusting on trails like these. Thoughts?
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
Stephen, the driver of the Highlander is very very very skilled. He mountain bikes, and that skill set helps him. He admits in the comments that his AWD system is not very advanced, so not only do his skills make up for it, but also the way he modified his vehicle. He disconnected both front and rear sway bars and came up with a way to quickly disconnect and then reconnect them. He built his front bumper with a steel reinforcements to slide over things. In part of the video with the deep ruts, you can see how effective his bash plate worked. This trail was a tough one. Not the hardest I’ve done, but it’s up there. I wasn’t 100% comfortable like I was when I summited imogene pass at 13.1K feet. I felt like my Passport could use more wheel articulation. I actually messaged Stephen to get the link to his quick disconnect sway bar end links. I’ll receive them on the 15th, and I’m expecting them to make a big difference. I was the only AWD here with connected front sway bars.
@autoduel3 жыл бұрын
The Highlander AWD system is pretty poor. If you seen the AWD battle channel, you can see how bad it is. If one wheel goes up in the air, it will just spin. I pick my lines to avoid that situation and use just enough momentum to get all wheels back on the ground avoiding one wheel dips and crossups. Disconnecting sway bars also helps increase articulation and reducing the chance of wheel lift. Know your vehicle's limitations and adjust your driving style to give it the best chance of success.

Thanks for watching! I appreciate it! So, the Passport has one of the more advanced AWD systems on the market right now and that’s why I drove slow and unskillful 🤣. I just relied on the the mechanical advantages. You can actually buy a Passport Sport AWD for a little cheaper than a Rav4 trail. A lot of car reviewers don’t understand how iVTM4 works. Its two part. The twin clutch AWD system (different than more simpler Rav4 system) Is always on, but the traction control system is similar to the 4Runners A-TRAC, it only operates at lower RPMs. Rev your engine and “send it” like in most AWD’s and traction control won’t work. A iVTM4 equipped Honda should be driven like a 4WD rather than an AWD.

Now, most of these are tickling 300hp. With a lift, skid plates and good tires, no reason they cannot go anywhere you want, especially if you can lock all four wheels.

Nice video. My question is why was the ascent not included? Should I think that the outback wilderness is better than the ascent for off road?
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We had an overlanding trip that included 20+ vehicles. The 5 of us in this video just happened to be the ones up for this rough trail. In other words, I have no control over what vehicles go 😃. So, I thought the Outback wilderness would be geared just like the ascent at 14.6:1, but it turns out Subaru reconfigured the CVT to have a more aggressive gear ratio in the OBW and it’s at 15.5:1. The OBW would be better suited because it has more minimum ground clearance, but also more maximum ground clearance. A stock OBW has 11.5” of side clearance. This clearance helps get through rocky terrain. This is the clearance that lines up with the tires. A Subaru Ascent has 9” of side sill clearance. This is a rough trail, so the 2” lifted OBW you see in this video has 13.5” of side sill clearance. You can modify an ascent to have 11”, but not sure if that would be enough for a trail like this. Also, note that the OBW in this video has both front/rear sway bar deleted and has over 25 years of wheeling experience. This is not a trail I would recommend for any stock AWD vehicle. I hope that answers your question 😃

In your adventures has turbochargers ever come into play with high elevation?
@JonDZ_Adventuring2 жыл бұрын
No. They’ve been more of a detriment actually, and here’s why. Turbo engines run at a lower compression ratio. That means that from idle, it takes more work to get moving. Even at sea level, they can have issues, and it’s compounded even more at high elevation. Once these engines get moving, then they won’t be as bogged down as an engine without a turbocharger. Now, gearing will do a better job at fighting the affects of power loss at elevation. There’s a video by TFL where they compare a Turbo Ford Edge, Nissan Murano and a Honda Passport at 1 mile above sea level. In the 0-60 tests, the Passport won, even having less torque than the Ford Edge. I know there’s KZbin Channels that claim turbos are better at elevation, but that only comes into play once the vehicle is in motion. It’ll be great on the highway, but it can be a detriment on a trail.
@JonDZ_Adventuring2 жыл бұрын
With all that said, a vehicle like a Bronco Sport that is geared well at 17.9:1 and has a turbo engine should do well at elevation.

I studied that video (and the uphill one too) when he released it, because I knew that I would try to redeem myself. The trail was a lot more difficult than I could have imagined 🤣. I kind of forgot how to use momentum, which was nerve wrecking because there was one spot where I had to “send it” to avoid sliding sideways into a rock. It was during the drone footage section, but not sure if I caught it. Back 3 years ago, many of us attempted this trail. I turned around because I lacked ground clearance. For those that continued, there was massive carnage. Someone bent his lower control arm, people bashed radiator support bars, doors were dinged. I’m so glad I turned around back then 😇.

Another question that came to mind as I read the specs of the vehicle is: What do you think of the differences between the "trail tires" (Geolander G015, Wildpeak Trail, BFG Trail Terran T/A) vs the "real all terrain" tires (Wildpeak AT3w, BFG Ko2). Especially when this is applied to the conditions we have in socal (dry, rocky, loose and loose over packed). From the video, it doesn't seem like there is significant difference in their performance. But how has your experiences in the real world been when wheeling with other folks that use these? there must be a reason why you run a "real AT" right? The trail tires seem to be nice since they are usually much lighter than their "real AT" counterpart.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. First of all you can see two different type of driving styles. I crawled it similar to the 4WDs, but since I don’t have their wheel articulation, I’d lose traction and would have to “bump” it. I drive like this to reduce trail damage and stress on my vehicle. It’s paid off, 86K miles and nothing has broke. When more momentum is used, less grip is needed, but as you can see, there are some obstacles that will kill momentum. I actually have experience with the G015 and Cooper discovery AT3W. There’s a substantial difference with the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws on Rock, Ice, and Rain.
@nkhuang13903 жыл бұрын
