Exitinct animals are easy for Gar, as they are natural and realistic. But Turning into a mythical creature is hard for him. Mostly because it's combining different animals together. However, during the New Teen titans storyline "The Brotherhood of Evil Returns", Gar takes center stage, especially near the end of the comic, when He attacks madame rouge in a rage, and she, a shapeshifter herself exclaims "Help! He's gone mad! He's turning into animals that don't even exist!"

BB doesn't understand deeper emotions or worse (in some iterations of the character) buries them and self destructs. See young justice. I get why most people can see them with each other, but it's not what a long lasting healthy relationship looks like.

If I were writing a Beast Boy' series, there are two things I'd add to his backstory: 1) I'd make it clear that he was indeed as old as the rest of the Doom Patrol, and is still a kid because he was in suspended animation for a good long time at some point (probably held captive by the Brotherhood for study). 2) I'd make it just a little bit clearer (although still not quite explicit) just what that disease endemic to African green monkeys and fatal to humans that he contracted is (hint: it was unknown in 1965, but is tragically widespread among humans these days).

The marvel version of beast boy is known as reptil, not as cool as he can only turn into red dinosaurs. Beast boy also is connected to the red aka the Parliament of Limbs almost like how Swamp Thing is connected to the green. Except he’s not red and isn’t the avatar of the red. There’s a time where he was red but it wasn’t permanent. In the amalgam comics universe, there’s a hero that is the combination of Beast Boy and Beast from the X-men named Beastling. He also was known as Changeling before Beast Boy.

Beast Boy once also turned into a sapient alien species, which would imply he can turn himelf into Tamaranean or a Kryptonian as well. Beast Boy's old alias was Changeling, a one-story Superman character who explicitly could turn himself into a Kryptonian, but he didn't last past that issue.
