I use to consider myself a fairly big Marvel fan but all I really knew was the MCU films and that's about it. I understood the heroes and bits and pieces of their origin from just watching the films (which by the way THEY ARE AMAZING IN EVERY WAY). but thanks to Varient and you Arris I've learned a lot more about the comic universe and other characters that I didn't really think would matter to the MCU. It's been a couple of years since I read it but here goes. Drax together with some skrulls escapes a big prison in the outer rim and lands on earth. Now this Drax looks like the one we know from today expect bigger, but he's a lot dumber and manages to get killed by skrulls. Like a cocoon he's reborn in a slimmer, sleeker and more intelligent version om himself. This i right before Annihilation. I really liked it.

Huh interesting this origin version and description of him sounds a lot better than his movie and recent animated TV show counterpart (the dead wife and kid part ill give do help make him more sympathetic) who are kind of the typical brute like characters except these ones take everything they hear even if it is meant to be a joke or sarcasm as very literal. Though this does beg the question what did ever happen to the original human turn destroyer version of him was he killed or something?

The reason why they Nerfed Drax in the MCU is because his origin in MCU will be somehow slightly different. He was a formidable force and indeed the destroyer. But when Thanos killed half of his including his wife and children, he swore to never be like Thanos. So thats why he has restriction in killing.

He wasn't "brought back a few times". Drax is immortal and will ressurrect whenever he dies as long as Thanos is alive. Each time he comes back it's in a new form with new powers and attributes.
