Proving the doctrine of original sin and federal headship, refuting universalism.
Think about this parallel: for a saved sinners - as surely as we were born in the state of original sin because of Adam, and commit personal sins and are deserving of death and hell, now justified by faith, our sins are forgiven, Christ's righteousness is imputed to us and we have eternal life; then, once glorified, we will never sin again. So, just as certain and painful the reality it is that we sin because of our fallen nature, likewise is the blessed reality that we will never die and then never sin again, because of Jesus Christ. Talk about assurance of salvation in the doctrine of imputation.

Thankyou for a great exegesis of Romans 5: 12 to 19. The subject of original sin has been constantly challenged and mis-interpreted over hundreds of years. I have found the book In Understanding Be Men by TC Hammond ( first edition 1936 ) a very infomative read. From pages 74 to 83 he gives a wonderful explanation of original sin. I especially found his reference to objections to this concept a sobering and thought provoking read. His insights into Pelagianism and semi-pelagian beliefs are revealing. Especially as we see semi-pelagianism has had a resurgence of late. God bless you in your ministry.

While clips like these are useful and helpful for a quick answer, it is always a far greater blessing when you see it for yourself while reading and studying your Bible, especially when it comes to difficult passages where extra care is needed. I remember when I finally understood how this passage works last summer while reading through Romans a few times slowly over a few days. So I would like to encourage all to just slow down from time to time, perhaps take one book of the Bible and spend a few days in it (depending on the length, of course), connecting the flow of argumentation, following the thoughts of the author. Also, write notes. Whenever something jumps out at you, write it down. It took me too long to realize how helpful this is, even in casual Bible reading, let alone deeper study. If you don't like to write in your Bible, write in a notebook, a piece of paper, note-taking app on your smartphone (I find that the most convenient way, since it's always with you, and you can organize your notes easily - though if your device breaks, or an EMP hits, it's all gone, so be careful). Anything, just try to keep it reasonably organized so you can easily find it later. You must also ignore chapter and verse divisions. While helpful for easy reference (when you write notes), they tend to distract from the flow of thought. Those are not part of the inspired text of Scripture, and are much later additions, sometimes seemingly at random. If you can, get a readers Bible, or switch off verse numbers in your Bible app. Lastly, if you have a special desire to understand a particular book, you will get that much more out of it. So a genuine desire to learn is tremendously helpful.
