I often think about the prussian king Frederick II, who once said: "The more I know the humans, the more I love the animals". He was a mixed personality; a big warrior who won many battles against neighboring countries, but in the same time interested in arts and culture, and a gay person. When he was just a young man, his father (Frederick I) executed another young noble man, the lover of Frederick II, but when the king also wanted to kill his own son as well for this "deadly sin", other high ranked persons in Prussia said stop, pointing out that there would be no one who could take over over the crown if he killed his own son.

Remembering that these guys were bakers, construction workers, teachers, students, etc. two years ago and now they're the most battle hardened army in the world literally keeps me up at night. Their resolve and will to fight is unparalleled to anything I've seen out of non-career soldiers. In a world that seems to be in the "soft times create soft men" phase, Ukrainians show every day that they're in the "hard times create hard men" phase (men and women of course). It's the little guy on his back, bleeding but punching up with a smile. The resolve of their defiance backed by levels of courage and sacrifice by the Ukrainian people belongs in the company of the battle of Thermopylae and all the other heroic shouldn't-even-be-close conflicts in history.

It's a little less fun and heroic. There is one country that holds the record in the world for corruption, which has a huge debt that it cannot pay in a century. And there is another country whose army is the second most powerful in the world, whose resources are practically unlimited. The population of Ukraine is less than thirty million. The population of Russia is over one hundred and forty-five million. What could a war between these two countries lead to? But there are those who tell Ukraine that Western aid will help them defeat Russia. There are those who say that Ukraine should not conduct any negotiations with Russia. That the Russian economy will collapse very soon. The Russian army will scatter. Russia will run out of weapons. Ukraine is at war with Russia. In the first two years, the Ukrainian army has been reduced in number by several hundred thousand people. These are the dead and wounded who can no longer return to the front. About thirty thousand more Ukrainian military personnel are in Russian captivity. About half a million men are fleeing Ukraine to avoid going to a place where they will be killed. This is when the country's population is thirty million. Having made several attempts to resist the Russian army, the Ukrainian army begins to retreat along the entire front line. And the speed of this retreat is gradually increasing. If in the early years of the war the loss of one major city was a tragedy for Ukraine, now Russia occupies five major cities in a year. The Defense of Ukraine consists of disparate groups of poorly trained civilians. What demand does Ukraine receive from its Western allies? According to the West, Ukraine should send everyone from the age of 18 to the slaughter. Now the question. Is the West an ally of Ukraine? Or is this the hyena who, having provoked the war, is eager to get Ukrainian lands without the Ukrainian population?
@НикоэльСамКүн бұрын

Just regarding the mapping. Ukraine utilizes advanced mapping tools like Kropyva (offline tactical planning), GIS Arta (artillery coordination with GIS), and Delta (real-time battlefield management). It really brings home that terrifying nightmare the Ukrainian people are going through. Focusing on just this one group of four brave soldiers, we watched three of them being wounded during many hours of fighting against and surviving a Russian onslaught. I'm glad they managed to escape encirclement and reach safety. FPS games are all very well, but these and no amount of training or drill can truly prepare anybody for horrors of war. Even that backblast at 31:09 was almighty! While I was watching this video, it's hard to get my head round that all this was happening for real. All that dark humour is necessary to provide some relief to a palpable fear, but also a form of acceptance that injury and death is their constant companion.

Hold on now, let's not act like Russia is some developing country with a raggedy military. This isn't your usual conflict where a world superpower is entering a third world country to fight terrorists or warlords. This is a peer-on-peer war where everyone is wearing body armor, using thermals and night vision, light and heavy military vehicles, heavy artillery, missile strikes, air support, and many other standards that a modern military follows. The Ukrainians might have better gear per soldier due to all of the support coming from the West, but Russia is still a first world country with relatively modern military gear. As much as we see Ukraine fighting and taking positions, they're still losing in sheer military size and firepower. While the media might portray the Russian military as dumb and full of shit, they are by no means incompetent. If that were true, Ukraine would have won by now. I hate the orcs just as much any other democracy breathing gigachad, but one of the first rules of combat is to never underestimate the enemy.

When Trump comes into office he has said he will be able to end the war very quickly. I can't remember his name, but there was a British embedded journalist in Afghanistan that put out a documentary. In at least one part of the film they come under pretty serious ambush and, although you never see him shoot at anyone and they never address the legality of it, he's definitely holding a weapon in a couple shots when shit gets pretty crazy. I think there's probably a case to be made somewhere in international law for self-defense, especially since journalists and other non-combat personnel are supposed to be off-limits to hostilities and treated as civilians when captured or encountered on the battlefield.
@EvilGNU3 күн бұрын
Probably depends on if they are an official part of a nations armed forces or not and serve in that function (like press officers and so on) or if they are civilian journalists.
@ThatOneGuy-mn6dv3 күн бұрын
I think this also depends of the nature of enemy that they might find themselves in. It's likely they will be safe in this with the Russians and don't have to worry too much unless they find out they did some rather f up stuff but largely no need to defend themselves as they won't have a need to go after them. Jihadists in Syria on the other hand might be a different matter which may force one to put down the note pads and pick up a weapon due to the nature of the enemy.
