Origins of the Ancient Inca | DNA, History and Mythology

The Inca people arrived at Cusco valley and in a few centuries built the Tawantinsuyu, the largest empire in the Americas. The Tawantinsuyu was the cultural climax of 6,000 years of Central Andes civilizations overlapping modern countries of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, the South of Colombia and the North of Argentina and Chile. In contrast with the richness of archaeological and cultural evidence, pre-Columbian history vanishes in time as it intermingles with myths due to the lack of writing systems before the arrival of the European chroniclers.
Very little is known about the Inca origins and some genetic information could help reconstruct part of their history. Unfortunately the mummies and bodily remains of the Inca emperors, worshiped as gods, were burnt and buried in unknown locations due to religious and political persecution by the Christian Conquistadors and Inquisitors, so no direct material remains to study their DNA. "Thus for now, only the genetic analysis of modern families of Inca descent could provide some clues about their ancestors" remarks geneticist Jose Sandoval, first author, working at Universidad de San Martin de Porres at Lima, Peru.
There were two foundational myths for the origin of the Incas before they established themselves in Cusco valley to build their capital city.
One is that Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, considered children of the Sun God and founder parents of the civilization, came from Lake Titicaca about 500 km southwards from the border of North Bolivia and South Peru, more or less the same region where Tiwanaku empire existed a few centuries before.

There was indeed a *very large* precolumbian historical chronicle! Mayan scribes had been writing codices on birch bark for generations prior to the Spanish occupation. Only three of their kind are known to have survived a vengeful campaign to burn them after they were declared a collective heresy dangerous to indigenous souls. We will never know the scope of history that was destroyed within those codices - but the number set alight is said to have been in the thousands. It's a tragedy akin to the loss of the library at Alexandria.

Anthropologists think the Amerindian ancestors were most likely related to the Paleoasiatic strain than to the Yeniseians, although some languages like Ket, for example, are remotely related to some North American ones. Hence the Na Dene hypothesis, which is still controverted. We're still not sure how many lineages crossed the Bering Strait, nor the exact location of diffusion. Neither there's any certainty about how many waves of migration did occur.

Its so weird that no one connected these civilizations with pre-bronze-age collapse middle east. Its almost like we dont want to acknowledge that the first spectacularly failed attempt at globalization was 3000 years ago. Hypothetical: The native americans knew where the middle east was and how to get there, and sent traders who brought back goods, culture, religion and technology. That persisted for a while, and all the complex problems existed (like some civilizations embracing trade more than others), until drought strained American civilizations particularly harshly. Some of the Americans that set sail wanted to migrate to the old world, while other groups were afraid that would lead to their homes being discovered. The later, led the bloodiest raids, carrying out "evils" unfamiliar to the middle easy, but were just common central american rituals. The two worlds were trading for probably over a millennia, until they abruptly stopped. Native americans were the only groups large enough, that also wouldnt be communicate any history of it to the present. We think about the collapse as non-modern, but theres no reason to think it wasnt exactly the same dynamics - clandestine trade, false flags, and conflicting ideology within and across governments.

They had quipus, which were knotted strings used for their accounting. They’ve found a lot of those and there is a lot of discussion of how they used them within the writings of the chroniclers from shortly after the spanish invasion. Some people think the quipus may have also had other types of symbols in the strings, but at best it was very limited, and only certain members of the elite could read them. There are no other references to any other writing system within ancient peruvian cultures, which indicates that their knowledge was passed on orally.

The conclusion that this skeleton is " negroid ", which is a term that I believe was discarded decades ago " ( probably about the time that the remains were dubbed, " negrita " ), can't be confirmed with any modern methods. It is true,however, that years ago many considered this proof of a strong ancient African or Pacific island connection. That's not to say that geneticists haven't found South American and Melanesian interaction in certain populations. It's the idea that a single set of remains with no other clearly identified, unequivocal, material evidence could or would establish an eastern connection with Africa, shows a willingness to accept such a scenario beyond what could be gleaned from the evidence.

@Etruscans civilization Thank you for that clarification and correction. Don't mean to come off as an expert, just trying to follow the trail of what some who are in that category have written. In my thinking, so far, it seems the hypothesis of early African trans Atlantic water route is below the level of likely. My reasoning is practical: that a reciprocal trade/exploration route from the African continent, even given much lower LGM sea levels, would probably require technology they are not known to have possessed. I'm not saying they didn't have sea worthy ships, or the fortitude that would be required to make the journey, It's more the lack of a reliable clock, compass, sextant, and maybe astrolabe. I love learning about all fields of scientific research, I especially love learning that something I've thought for a long time, is wrong, and then learning how we know what we think we now know. I usually don't hold fast to any given notion, cause I know they are usually modified with subsequent research.
