Dear Bill: Oris is an example of a watch brand that is likely under appreciated. Our two college aged children are each getting an Oris watch for Christmas as an introduction to Swiss mechanical watches. In addition to their new in house movement, Oris has some interesting and worthwhile watches with attractive real world pricing. I was in a very quality AD earlier today who unselfconsciously offered Oris and Hamilton in addition to Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Grand Seiko, IWC, Hublot and Breitling. Oris watches are well executed and meet the needs and tastes of people who are attracted to sound design, quality and a brand with a long history at an affordable price. Their in house movements indicate an Oris commitment to moving forward in a new and thoughtfully considered step forward for the brand. Thanks for highlighting Oris in your video as a brand of which more people should take notice. Best regards, Howard

The nonlinear power reserve is displaying the amount of power remaining from 10 days to zero. The notches representing the days are placed close together at the top of the scale, and further apart at the bottom. As power is released, the hand moves around the scale - slowly at first, and then more quickly as the notches become more spread out.

Hi Robert, yes, that is correct. I was simply wondering why it was referred to as non-linear instead of a retrograde....because during winding, the PRI goes back to the top. I see your point, though, the indices are at irregular intervals. Thanks, I didn't seem to think so; I'll have another look. Kindest regards, Bill

Hi John! After I learned that Oris was forced to make nothing but quartz watches while under the yoke of Swatch, I felt really bad for them, and given how they've had to fight an up-hill battle on their own, I too have a higher opinion of the brand. Kindest regards, Bill

Hi Bill, As you know, being a very recent (two months) fan of your videos, I just viewed this overview on Oris last evening. Great job! As we've previously discussed, Oris is a brand I've liked and admired since 1983 when I first saw their watches on a trip to Hong Kong. I recently got my wife a Ladies Big Crown Pointer Date Two-Tone (steel and rose gold) with a white face. She loves the watch and it's replaced her 20-year old Tudor Monarch as her go to watch. She reciprocated and got me an Oris Rectangular Complication for my birthday. I'm just waiting on the blue alligator leather strap with deployant clasp to arrive as the polished stainless steel bracelet is too prone to scratches. This is my preferred casual sports/dress watch when I don't want to wear my Reverso.

Yes, I knew I liked the Oris brand, but I had nothing to really definitive to back up my like other than the elegance of their round steel and gold moon phase watches from decades ago. Recently I've been intrigued by their Big Crown Pro Pilot Small Second GMT, but at 45mm it was just to big even for my wrist and hand. I had to rule it out as there are now too many other and better watches on my wish list. One of them being the Nomos Zurich World Time we discussed.@@watchartsci

Hi Bill, they call the power reserve indication non-linear because the scale is non-linear, it shows much more detail for the last remaining days of power than for the first ones.

@nssomething8370

I wonder if the non linear nature of the power reserve is due to the fact that it is a single barrel and differences in torque will mean less accuracy/power as it unwinds.
@davidwanstall
@davidwanstall 6 жыл бұрын
There is certainly less power leading to some accuracy issues when the mainspring is almost completely uncoiled, but I think the non-linear indication is because it is far more useful to know whether you have 0.5 or 0.75 days left rather than 9.5 or 9.75.
@digggert
@digggert 6 жыл бұрын
@@davidwanstall David you are spot on. I remember reading about it back when the caliber was first released. A very cool detail are the two snail-shaped cogs on the left. A classic differrential gearing,(needed for a reserve indicator) together with these two complex gears achieve the non-linear display since the transmission ratio constantly changes as those snail-shaped gears turn.

A cool topic to cover and well deserved considering the work Oris put into this. It is also impressive that they claim to be - concerning this movement - almost completely independent of suppliers that belong to large watch companies.

Hi Diggert, yes, they've really done a good job, and I think as much as possible they want to systematically build their own capacity to make movements. It's rough, but judging from their first manufactured movement in almost 40 years, I think they're on the right path. Kindest regards, Bill

Oris calls it nonlinear on the base caliber 110 because of the two "worm gears" as shown on the left side of the movement. It has an asymmetrical intercalation of teeth that gives a nonlinear indication on the dial side.

@watchartsci
@watchartsci 3 жыл бұрын
Engin, the Oris series starting with calibre 110 really has launched Oris into Strong Horology. The Tissot I like has the ETA/Unitas 6498 movement... the 'Heritage Petite Seconde' www.jomashop.com/tissot-heritage-watch-t1194051603701.html Running at 2.5 Hz / 18,000 vph ... that's the same frequency as the top watchmakers use. (The most common frequency is 4Hz 28,000 ... that really beats up the watch!..) So for a good combo, a Tissot Heritage and an Oris with a caliber 110 or better is a sweet combo and affordable too. If you shop around and negotiate all are available (new) at prices that are far better than MSRP, but you do have to keep an eye out for motivated sellers. I like the looks and I think it offers huge value for dollar re the overall build quality relative to the price. You are correct that the perception of ORIS is changing. @watchartsci 6 жыл бұрын
Hey BluntTale...$7k is a lot of money! There's no way you should be spending that kind of money on a Pierre Kunz with an ETA. I construct watches for under $100 with an ETA. If you want a Grand Complication, get a Christopher Ward or Oris with an ETA or Sellita movement. They're better watches. Pierre Kunz watches are Standard Horology... not even Strong let along High Horology. Here's another option for Exceptional Horology-an H. Moser. It's listed at $10k, but offer $7k, and you'll walk away with a great brand new watch ( www.shopworn.com/product/h-moser-cie-venturer-small-seconds-18k-rose-gold-manual-wind-mens-watch-2327-0400/ ) Another alternative are Parmigiani Fleurier...true High Horology-check these out; all brand new ( www.chrono24.com/search/index.htm?caseMaterials=4&dosearch=true&gender=1401&manufacturerIds=193&maxAgeInDays=0&pageSize=60&priceFrom=0&priceTo=-1&redirectToSearchIndex=true&sortorder=1&usedOrNew=new ) And remember, NEVER offer the full asking price. I like the fact that ths movement is minimally decorated i don't really see why a movement should be decorated in a sport watch. @@watchartsci That would make me think that the holy trinity sport watches were more massly produced. 20 or 30k or more for a steel sport watch is utter lunacy and the result of price inflation due to buyer speculation. Why would anyone want a sport watch in precious metals anyways. One it's tacky two what's the point? Don't get me wrong i think a langes are great and all their watches are yes dressy pieces but dress watch size has creeped up to 38 mm and over. That is just wrong on so many levels. I once bought a Patek with a 3rd party band and ended up spending a small fortune to get a replacement of band and buckle. With Oris, on the other hand, I wonder if collectors wouldn't mind going with a high quality 3rd party or even a bespoke strap. I'm sure many would feel the same way as I did about my Patek, and so your comment becomes especially important. Thanks for the insight, Bill

Oris and Zenith are the most underrated old brands on the market. Maybe is marketing, if James Bond wore Oris...

Mladen, what you say is especially true given the new Otis calibers. It might help if Zenith re-thought their unreadable skeleton dials. Take care, Bill

@@watchartsci hahha you are right, better to ditch skeletons and openheart than to have them like that. Oris has one beautiful skeleton with 10 days movement. Realy cool.

Just watched this now. Why dient they just resurrect an in-house movement from before the quartz crisis?

Hi Martin, good question. My hunch is that if they did that, they'd miss out on a lot of the advances in mechanical watchmaking over the past several years, and the competition would call them out on it, and they'd have precious few customers. Take care, Bill

Hey Bill , why did the Quartz watch almost destroy the mechanical watch industry? Was it because of the new wow factor ? Was it because of the accuracy? Or because of price ? I remember reading somewhere that people were pee ode ! That President Ford was wearing some gold Quartz watch in a state of the union address, because it cost a fortune and the Country was in a bad recession, I’ve seen photos of him wearing the watch , and except for the gold I was thinking what a piece of shit watch , yet I was very young at the time , had I been older I too probably would have been swept up in the hype , back then you could get a Rolex for a hundred bucks, so I don’t know if other brands could have lowered their prices to try to save the company? I don’t know what a Patek was going for back then ? But I’m sure they were not asking for the insane prices they are asking for and getting today!? I think it’s rich people wanting things even someone with a decent job can’t afford! Now a car back in the 60s or 70s especially the muscle cars were only a few thousand dollars, which was a lot of money but it wasn’t out of reach for everyone if you wanted it bad enough, now if you want a top of the line car you’re gonna be paying an arm and a leg ! But to my knowledge cars have become more high tech, the difference is like night and day , and watches are basically the same technology going back at least 75 years yea they spit shined them a lot but it’s the same watch you were buying in the 60s and 70s for a hundred bucks , I’m talking about Rolex just for reference, now they want ten thousand or more for a Rolex ? And thanks to Mr Newman don’t even try to buy a vintage Rolex! A watch they almost couldn’t give away 45 years ago , Bill what watch has the best movement and looks and is a mechanical hand winding watch and has the cheapest price in your opinion? Again Bill I’m new to this watch game , about a year ago I just really started loving watches ! I don’t know why ? I always liked a watch but I just became head over heels in love with watches! Well I don’t know about the head over heels part ? Lol but I just really started to like watches, maybe it’s my midlife crisis? And it’s a shame because as a young man I had my hands on a Rolex, I’m not sure what kind ? It had a chocolate dial the day and date and it was in 18 K I think I can remember that the crystal was a high or fluted ? Not sure if that’s the word for it ? But I’ve seen similar types of Rolex watches that looked like it , and the prices are out of this world for it , I had it in 1990 and sold it at a watch shop in a small town for 45 hundred bucks , so I know for sure the watch must have been worth a fortune! For example I took my 14 k Movado watch to a shop ten years later and was only offered 50 bucks for the gold ? That watch cost me 15 hundred brand new , I haven’t looked it up but I’m guessing a similar watch today would be at least double if not triple the price , I was out looking at rings gold rings the other day , it’s insane what they want for a 10 k ring ! For a little 10 k nugget ring they want over 2 Grand? I had much much nicer rings 20 years ago I paid 500 bucks for , they would probably want 10 Grand for the stuff I had , in ending why are watches like Rolex so expensive compared to 45 years ago ? And I see watches like the new hulks and Pepsi are going for about 10 Grand brand new ,but there’s a shortage of them wink 😉 wink , and people are actually paying over 20 thousand dollars for them ? ,! I don’t care if I had all the money in the world I’m not paying double for a watch Rolex is pulling some type of scam on ! And for the love of God Bill get yourself a Rolex already! I’d love to see you get the Prince ! I really love that watch too , funny a lot of people don’t like that or the Cellini watch ? The dual time Cellini to me is a beautiful watch ! And the Prince is to , even that guy you talk to online the wrangler or rancher ? Big guy with grey hair , he’s friends with that nut Charlie luxury! They both hate both of those watches? Can’t figure that one out they both love Rolex ? Every Rolex except those two models? Go figure? Have a nice day Bill ,

The Quartz crisis was created because the Japanese invented a watch that could keep better time and sell for a fraction of the typical Swiss watch. Never, worry about what online pundits say; do your own research ... and most importantly have fun doing so!! Cheers Bill

I'd kill for Artix GT with the 10 day caliber. Unfortunately they still use 38h power reserve, which is extremely poor for my taste.
