honestly i would love if 40k had more comedic relief moments like the orks. warhammer fantasy was sort of a more silly setting at times (even vermintide, the game literally set during the end times, has the funniest interactions between characters and species ever). 40k really lacks this and i think it takes away. part of why warhammer fantasy felt so grim was that despite the sometimes silly moments it really contrasted with moments of everything going to hell. 40k sometimes has a feel of all gloom and doom and that just doesn't do it for me as well.

One recurring trend with Orks that I think is really funny is how people will repeatedly underestimate the Orks by thinking they're just animals basically before getting completely blindsided by them using actual 200 IQ plays. What's funnier also is a lot of the time these 200 IQ plays happen usually out of sheer coincidence and on-the-fly rather than any concerted effort of strategizing on the Orks' part.

The funny thing about orks is that they can basically do absolutely anything and it still would make sense lore wise. Like orks can be pirates with peg legs, eye patches and squig parrots, they can be samurais devoted to the way of DA CHOOPA, they can be cowboy/knight errant fighting crime, becouse in wh40k there is lots of that and that means more fights, and it still make sense. What I love about the Orks is right when you count them out they always come back. Hell, even with the new arks of omen lore, you see the Orks show up at just the right time to lay down the beating. They are a nice faction to play as because you can laugh at how hilariously serious everyone else takes things, meanwhile you can just keep sending more bodies - a strategy so basic, that for Orks it flips back around to being smart and strategic. It's beautiful, man.

One of the main things I love about orks is that they're actually a pretty good barometer to how seriously GW intends people to take the setting. I'll point to an example with Guilliman. Sure he's especially broody these days (see the 10e trailer for an example) and he's a badass and capable leader, but he exists in the same universe as the orks, so he's also kind of a goober. I'm not saying that 40K is a setting where nothing is to be taken seriously, but it's a setting where seriosness itself is always at least a little tongue-in-cheek. *EVERYTHING* is dialed up so far past 11 that it's absurd, and the campy absurdity is the point. Guilliman's self-seriousness is kind of a joke. The Imperium's over-the-top evil being the only hope for human survival is just silly as a concept. The drukari's sadism is wildly cartoonish. All the tropes are played so hard that there's nothing even vaguely realistic about the 40K setting, and it's all said with the comically stoic straight face and a quinesentially British "stiff upper lip"... except the orks. The orks clue in the people that are sarcasm-blind that everything here is satirical on some level. Because orks are obviously silly and riiculous, and they fit right in with everything else that's often so comedically serious.

I love Orks, I wish I had more inspiration to paint mine. Had a kommando kill team base coated and sitting in my pile of shame for a while. All I know if I want them to be old school British punk themed and I'm going to call them "Da Orky Boyz" in reference to Sham 69's Hersham Boys. My favorite thing I've ever heard about orks was in some book, a space marine vessel was pulling up next to an ork rok to start firing and the marines started seeing green dots pop up on the surface of the rok. Mycorrhiza & Myco-heterotrophy are both symbiotic relationships b/t Fungus & Plants, so it's not too far of a stretch that GW is just rolling w/ the idea that the Old Ones being biohackers didn't cook up a spore based lifeform that can leverage both decomposition & photosynthesis. The few fungus w/ chloroplasts those structures are purple, which explains why some stuff is invisible inside the orc related to nutrition.

It is have been my army of choice since I started playing 40k about 30 years ago. The Waaagh the Orks era Orks were more individualistic than say Space Marines and therefore more fun. You wouldn't see a Goffik Rok band turn up in an Eldar or Smurf army. The reason Orks look the way they do is because of a British comic character called Fungus the Bogeyman by a chap called Raymond Briggs who died fairly recently. This was then crossed with the personality of an '80's football hooligan and certain Germanic elements. All in all whether or not Orks are the perfect intro point to 40k depends on the person. If you're a powergamer type like my brother who just liked to win even if you resort to Exterminatus if you lose the battle you're probably too po-faced to fully appreciate Orks. If you enjoy getting together with friends because it's fun irrespective of who wins then Orks are grand.

I think what makes orks so funny in 40k is that they are a fantasy faction in a rathe sci fi-styled setting. Orks are the basic danger of fantasy, and are placed perfectly in the galaxy of warhammer. And i think that is why they gave it such a comic relief position. It is just wonderful

I think my favorite thing about orks is that they force the otherwise austere and very self serious setting to play along with how god damn goofy they are. A grizzled space marine who has seen countless battles and speaks with the gravitas of one that has starred down death and lived having to say something like “the ork warboss gitkicka deftooth and his army of choppa wielding boogie boyz lay waste to the forge world” will never not give me a good hearty chuckle.

I think every faction other than Votann, humanity, and the Eldar are good against daemons, inherently. Tau have weaker souls that daemons ignore, giving them time to plan, Necrons have no souls and have devices that make entire star systems warp free, orks you already mentioned, and Tyranids have a latent ability similar to a blank with shadow in the warp, and again, no real soul to steal.

As to Tzeentch, in my head cannon he's Big E so yeah he can run circles around anybody but Orks are too dumb for complicated schemes so Tzeentch probably only has a few tools to work with and finds them boring.

My wife use to have an ork army. she eventually stopped making them and instead built an ork army for Age of Sigmar. She explained that the orks in 40k are like the butt end of a joke, they're forced humor and the way I see it is they have so many weird and wacky qualities as regualr orks on top of all the characters what are meant to represent real life references such as stealthy spec ops orks, Pirates, and commando Rambo style orks they all lose there charm and personality. Orks are like whiped cream: Delicious, but lack substance if you don't put it on something else. Orks need more serious factions to bounce off and their shenanigens is not the material you can build a decade long lore on.

Getting exposed to 40k lore through tons of grimdark angsty Space Marine and Chaos God infodumps, then discovering Orks right after is the most entertaining juxtaposition ever, takes the piss right out of the whole setting precisely when you're convinced of how mean and serious everything is. My favorite Ork theory is that the Emperor is only alive on the throne because Orks don't know that he died.

Another good meme was during the opening days of second war of Armegeddon, a bunch of prisoners fought orks bare handed. When they picked up ork weapons to try and return fire the weapons exploded, opening up huge holes in the defensive lines, and the last most heard was the laughter of the orks.

I just bought my first couple models of orks to do some painting. As that’s something that’s really interested me and when I was a kid orks were my fav race in dark crusade. I would be interested in playing the table top, but alas no one to learn it with and duel. Still quite happy to have a nice collection of orks

They do technically have the ability to make advancements in their technology, but like everything else that has to do with orks it either happens by accident, or it scales with how many there are in one place, and if they are led by a sufficiently powerful warboss. This actually makes sense, they are a biological weapon and it makes sense that the Brain Boyz coded some kind of limiting factor into them.

I made an Ork army who basically have a prison aesthetic with the idea that they were spat out of the warp and crash landed on a moon that had a Mechanicus prison mining complex and they raided it, looting the orange uniforms and calling their choppas "shivs" and their warhorse has a weirdboy who is convinced he talks to Gork & Mork by rattling skulls filled with scrap and dipped in purple paint so they also paint their faces purple. I just wanted to use purple and orange as their clan colours and this came to mind. I have 160 boys and their finest moment was some Nobz cutting down one of the Tau 8 because he charged them when they had killsaws...bad idea.
