Not only the nose: the muzzle is the same for the three airplanes, and the fuselage itself is common too, in different lengths naturally: after the success of the 707, Boeing decided to produce jets for medium and short range, and to save time, it decided to use the same fuselage of the 707. Douglas made the same, it built the Dc9 starting from the muzzle and fuselage of the Dc8.

I miss when half of all the engines at a given airport were JT8Ds. True story, when I was a tiny kid, I used to watch 727s, thinking the center engine was actually on top of the fuselage, IN the "S" duct, and it was somehow like magic, or mysterious added thrust with no outlet. Same with the L-1011. As an aviation lover since old enough to walk, it really was akin to an amazing riddle to solve. Haha!

When I lived in Clearwater, Florida I drive across the causeway to Tampa & watch the planes from the parking garage & take pictures too, I'd sometimes go to the gate area to watch planes & the ramp people work around the planes. This was between 1988 & until I left Florida in 1994. About a third of these airlines didn't fly there at the time I lived in Florida, only American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines, USAir, Piedmont (before merging with USAIR), former Eastern Airlines & United Airlines. I even walked through the empty Eastern Airlines gate area since trams were still going back & fourth between the ticketing/main terminal to the gate area. I wish I had my camera at the time to take pictures. Anyhow great memories.

@orestes19845 жыл бұрын
Air travel was different before September 11 2001, more people were willing to fly. A lot of those airlines went bankrupt because of September 11. The rest that didn't either turned into codeshare airlines or if they didn't they went bankrupt, or merged with other airlines due to the rising cost of fuel.

SO many trijets. America has always been behind the curve. By the 1990s the only commercial trijet in active service in Australia was the 727. We'd already transitioned to 737s predominately with a mix of 767s and 747s flying long haul domestic between Sydney and Perth. Then the 717 found favor with some regional airlines and Qantas.
