Looong ago I used to see ortho residents come with the attending into the cardiovascular recovery/ICU to see consults. It was always a pleasure for the nurses; all ortho residents in those days were guys about 6’1”, fit, had a tan, played tight end in high school and made an A in shop. One day I saw my first female ortho resident in with another ortho resident I knew. I went over to speak to him and was introduced. She was a tall, pleasant looking woman, very fair and almost white blonde. She extended a surprisingly sinewy forearm and gave me an impressive handshake. “I’m a farm girl from Wisconsin” she said in answer to the unasked question. The paradigm of the ortho stereotype was maintained, albeit slightly altered.

I'm a German anaesthesiologist and this video has become somewhat memetic in our hospitals, definitely among anaesthesiologists but also surgeons and even some internists know it. If you say "there is a fracture" in English in a German hospital, a lot of people will immediately correctly infer what you are alluding to. Better surgeons use it in a self-deprecating way.

The five lies of Surgery, I. Of course it's an emergency. 2. Blood loss with be minimal. 3. It will only take an hour. 4. It was dry when we closed. 5. Thanks anesthesia, we couldn't have do it without you.

@rgml1957 We do have a sense of humour ... what we don't have is time to come up with a video response... Here in Greece the joke goes otherwise. How can you distinguish a registrar from his clogs... - The Surgeon's have blood on them... - The OBGYN have amniotic fluid - The Urologist's have urine - The Orthopedist's have casting materials and blood - The Anaesthesiologist's have ... coffee and the nephrologist....well they wear sandals and other elegant shoes not clogs

This is not realistic. Every orthopod would recognize that a patient with asystole would have no way to pump ancef to the bone.
@dsmdgold4 жыл бұрын
@@MaryDunford I'm sorry that that happened. Medical errors are serious issue. However, this is a joke. Orthopedic surgeons actually do know what asystole is. However they are also notorious within the surgical world for being very aggressive in getting their cases scheduled. They are also (unfairly) stereotyped as "dumb jocks". They also have a reputation for not really concerning themselves with any non-skeletal issues the patient may have. (Probably also unfair.) The video highlights and magnifies all that, and is one of the funniest pieces of OR humor on the internet. My response also played on all that. It's actually a cliched joke that Orthopods not what the heart is for; it pumps antibiotics to the bone. (An infected bone is a devastating complication and orthopedists are rightly quite fanatical about preventing them, including on insisting on serious antibiotic regimes.) Also, who responds to 9 year old youtube comments?
