I used to love Oscar Wilde’s writing. I then learned about his life and how horribly he was treated. After that, reading Oscar Wilde made me very depressed. I feel his pain.

Douglas died in his 70s. My heart hopes that he regretted what he caused in the wakes of his involvement with Wilde.

He actually showed some remorse at the end. He said that he behaved like a monster to Oscar and that he indeed loved him and still loves after 40 years and admitted to be in romantic and sexual relationship with him (after de profundis he denied everything and the whole relationship with Oscar). But that’s actually it - he had his chance to apologise to him, to response to de profundis and stop his homophobic bullshit, but he didn’t.

There was a line in Eating Out: Drama Camp... And now something from the other prince of English Literature: Oscar Wilde. I firmly believe Wilde could have surpassed Shakespeare had he been given enough time and peace to continue writing. I also believe we, culturally, were robbed by Wilde's demise. And also Gustav Mahler, who was so busy conducting to earn a living he had little time to devote to composition.

I mean he was an excellent writer - he was so talented and knew all the literary instruments, he was so educated. And his relationship to words and language is very rare. It's so sad what happened to him. But to be honest, Oscar's best works were written in prison or after prison (Profundis, the ballad of reading gaol and his essays). He seems to have shown his emotions for the first time. In fact, he was afraid to reveal his feelings to others (friends and the public) before prison. He was quite a wasted potential. His poetry was rather average (not bad at all, but not the best), except for the ballad of reading, which was a masterpiece, the best of the best. Who would have suspected him of writing such a good poem? Incredible. I think he just had a lot of personal problems. According to many (including Yeats), he was bedridden most of the time (before prison). and when he did manage to get up, he drank or took cocaine. he had a general tendency towards toxic relationships - so many used or abused him. and he was bullied all his life from a young boy onwards. In and out of prison, he was no longer able to pretend everything was fine as he always had or just drink alcohol to quell his depression. he went from an abusive relationship and " utter horror", as he put it, to prison and trauma all over again. How his friends described him after prison was typical for PTBS. I guess just too much at this point for him, thats why he never wrote again. He obviously needed therapy and no prison to become a better artist, but still he did incredible with de profundis

I had to google that cuz I wasn't sure. Mar-quee is the French pronunciation and Mar-quess the English... so really, both are correct

@@PatrickMarano-- Actually in Britain, that title is pronounced "MAR-kwess" with the accent on the first syllable. And his wife is titled a "Marchioness."

A brilliant mind ruined by hatred and bigotry. Those people responsible for Oscar's eventual death were not charged, were not punished, did not suffer for their crimes but the innocent victim did. Without this prejudice, what might have Oscar written that would have been even more brilliant? So, in effect, the entire world lost something with the way he was treated. Oscar's brilliant mind could see that his lover was unworthy of his attentions but he persisted anyway. He was not naive or innocent but was driven by his desire.
