Looking for something old, something new? Explore one of Scandinavia's oldest cities, ancient Norwegian Capital… Tønsberg 😉 NOT OSLO!
⏱⏱⏱ TIME CODES:
00:00 - WELCOME to TØNSBERG, Norwegian Old Capital
01:00 - Tønsberg and its history
02:10 - Tønsberg in numbers: size, population, how far from Oslo?
02:38 - How to get to Tønsberg from Oslo?
02:48 - How to spend your day in Tønsberg, Norway? Tønsberg Marina
03:30 - Tønsberg Brygga or Tønsberg Harbour
04:35 - Tønsberg - the oldest city in Norway
05:10 - Oseberg Viking Ship in Norway
06:20 - The Oldest BP Petrol Station (I’ve ever seen 😁)
06:53 - The World’s End in Norway or you have to visit Tønsberg when you travel to Norway
‼️ Tønsberg, historically Tunsberg, is a city and municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, eastern Norway, located around 102 kilometres (63 miles) south-southwest of Oslo on the western coast of the Oslofjord
😱 Tønsberg is generally regarded as the oldest city in Norway, founded by Vikings in the 9th century.
The town was destroyed by fire in 1536 and only in the 18th and 19th centuries did it become a major port and one of Norway’s major shipping and whaling centres.
🤔 Until the late 1960s it was Norway’s third largest maritime town. Tønsberg remains an industrial and shipping centre, with such diverse concerns as metal shops, shipyards, paper mink mills, leather processing, and breweries; it is noted especially for its silverware.
🤓 Tønsberg by numbers
102 kilometres from Oslo.
48,350 people live in Tønsberg city, split between Tønsberg and Nøtterøy municipalities.
20.8 percentage increase in population from 2000 to 2015.
‼️ Tønsberg is Norway’s oldest city. It actually dates back to the Viking era! By the Tønsberg harbor you can travel back in time at Vikingodden to experience the true size reconstruction of the legendary Oseberg Viking Ship and Klåstadskipet. You may try sailing a Viking longship too, if you dare!
‼️ As a bonus to car-free international visitors, the city is easy to reach on a day trip from Oslo by train or bus. Here are a few things go see and do while you're in town…
😎 Many famous Norwegians have called the city their home over the years including shipping magnate Wilhelm Wilhelmsen, former Liberal party politician and Prime Minister of Norway Johan Sverdrup, Manchester United footballer Ronny Johnsen, and chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen
‼️ Top sights in Tønsberg
✅ Tønsberg Brygge
The wharf has been the focal point of the city for more than a thousand years. Previously the centre point of trade for the region, the trading houses standing today date to the early 19th century and house bars and restaurants.
✅ ''Brygga'' in Tønsberg
When Tønsbergians talks about ''Brygga'' which is the famous harbour where nightlife and eating happens, they refer to the fact that Oslo people hang out here. The city is famous for this harbour to Norwegians.
✅ The Oseberg viking ship
The town is very significant because of the Oseberg ship which is a Viking ship that was found in the ground in 1904.
This is the ship from the Norwegian 20 krone. The ship is known as a national treasure that nobody dislikes.
They took the ship to Oslo in the 20s and made it part of the Viking ship museum there.
The ship was rebuilt in the 20s and the central bank put it on the 20 Krone. Maybe not a coincidence... Although rediscovered in 1904, which is a moment more deserving of a price. A replica of the Oseberg ship stands in the Slottsfjell museum.
It was built to the original specifications using only tools available during the Viking era. Sadly you can't take a ride in it, as the boat is only taken out of its mooring for special events
✅ Verdens Ende (The World's End) is part of Færder National Park and offers great ocean views, a small animal park, horse riding, rock climbing, and a visitor centre. The well-known Vippefyret tower marking the site was built from stones from Tjøme beach more than 80 years ago.
The scenic spot The World’s End, Verdens Ende is situated at the southernmost tip of Tjøme. Its unique lighthouse makes it a popular destination even when all elements of nature are in play!

I live in Tønsberg, so have done a great research about the town. For the moment some places are closed due to infection control. As you mention, many come and enjoy Tønsberg in the summertime. Then it's rockn roll, thats for sure🥂🤪🎶. It's close to lots of beaches and small islands as well . Thanks for your upload. 👍👍

Just another note about the oldest city. When i went to university we were told that Tønsberg is not the oldest city in Norway, but that there is for example a place close to Sandefjord that is much older, called Kaupang. But Kaupang and other older cities are not alive anymore, but merely playgrounds for archeoligists. So Tønsberg is the oldest city that is still alive, so you are not wrong, becaue who counts the dead ones? Anyways, if you want to tear down an old building in Tønsberg and build a new one, be prepared for years of work before you can start construction, If you remove a buliding and it's foundation, you have to leave the plot open for archeologists for a few years before you can put something new there... :)

Kaupang must be a ghost town. In English language, "ghost town" means a town that is no longer in use for inhabitants, but has archaeological relics and historical value; ghost towns may be visited by tourists out of historical curiosity, but only on day trips because there aren't aren't any functional hotels.

Hah...I expected it would just be a matter of time before you visited my hometown :) Some more information about the Oseberg Ship Replica; It is actually on the water all through the summer, just lying there attracting attention. I have been part of the rowing crew on two occations as part of a class in cultural studies at Borre University. If you sign up for that class you may get a chance to row it, but I believe there are many other ways to get a seat on the ship. Maybe through membership in the organisation that builit the ship. When they planned to make this replica they built several small models and tested the seafaring capabilities in small watertanks. Through these studies they found out that the ship in Oslo were not put together correctly. There were always some extra planks in the back room in Oslo, that they maybe thought were spare boards for repair, but the new studies showed where those planks would have been on the ship. So the replica in Tønsberg are probably the only, or most, correct replica of all. With the changes they have now found that the ship can actually sail on the open ocean. I have also tried to sail it, and steered it, and the ship lies very high on top of the water, with a deep keel keeping it straight. This is not a ship for lots of cargo, but propbably more like the speed boat of the Viking age. This one is also the pinnacle of beauty of viking ships, much more elegant than most other viking ships with some of the most famous viking decorations. Some think it was an important seremonial ship that got buried with a woman that is thought to have been very beloved in the Tønsberg community. The ship seems to have been built on the west coast somewhere though.... Thanks, it was fun to see one of your videos from my own backyard :)

Well, you can say that the town or city where the king was with his advisors and staff, functioned as the kingdoms capital. King Håkon V was born and died in Tønsberg, perhaps that's what the locals are bragging about. His royal seat however was in Oslo. I've also been to Tønsberg and verdens ende, but you had better weather than me.

Hi Anna. Yes, Tønsberg is one of the oldest towns/cities in Norway (perhaps the oldest - much uncertainties on dates this far back). However it has never been the capital of Norway (as far as I know). Sarpsborg (Borg) has however been capital for some years around 1016. Nidaros (Trondheim) has been capital for several periods (first from 997) After this Bergen and Oslo for the most (if we see apart from the times when Stockholm or Copenhagen was running Norway)...

@@aragorniielessar1894 She wasn't wrong, though. Norway was complicated for hundreds of years, including during medieval times where several towns had the honour. It depended on where the king was, so when he was there it was the capital.

Depending a bit on your definition of "capital", the following sites have been Norway's capital for longer than a day or two. The Country of Norway as a state with a central government began traditionally in 872. After that, Tunsberg (now Tønsberg), Nidaros (now Trondheim), Bjørgvin (now Bergen) have been the capital before and after Oslo/Christiania/Kristiania/Oslo was. Oh yes, mustn't forget Copenhagen (from about 1536 to 1814). (It is agruable to say Stockholm too, but during the union with Sweden, the Norwegian parliament and (limited) government operated on Christiania at the same time.)
