You put it inside the bag or on your skin? Sorry for the ignorance trying to learn for my mom’s colostomy.

Here’s a smell hack that I’ve used over the last 20 yrs… and it’s perfectly fine inside your bag Hydrogen peroxide. Yep it works! I carry a small silicone squirt bottle in my purse. Every time I empty my bag I squirt a little inside. Only need less than a teaspoon! Please share. 😊

Is it any particular brand or product?

No, just a plain bottle of liquid hydrogen peroxide you can find at Walmart or a drug store

Hydrogen peroxide not advisable as the nature of the chemistry behind it dissolves tissues eventually. Go into any E.R. & they will tell you no no no, so please be careful using this.

Would that not burn your stoma if it gets on there ? Because if I get it on my fingers while cleaning, it burns pretty bad.

3% hydrogen peroxide. This doesn’t burn. It’s an ingredient in teeth whiteners. I only put about a 1/2 teaspoon in my pouch or a few drops. Very little amount.

Hello Amber, new ostomy here - well, kinda new. Originally diverticulitis & coughing caused perforation in May this year, had to be redone in August. Have learned more from all you guys on KZbin & am eternally grateful!! I do have one concern about the homemade lubricants though & want honest opinions? Seeing as how our stomas are basically mucus membranes - I was advised to never use anything inside our bags that couldn't be put in our mouths, so how safe are we when making homemade deodorizer/lubricants? I haven't been able to solve the odor problems at the worst end, but can't get good answers from my Dr's either? I do rinse out my bags, so the lubrication aren't too much of a problem at this time. Thank you so much for all you do for us in our community!

I am also 65, diagnosed with UC in 2019 and this past July I had a portion of my colon removed with a colonostomy bag in place the other day I swear to God I farted out my butt just a little one but I was shocked. I can't find any information about farting out your butt when you have a colostomy bag, can you help me?
@cockeyedoptimista

Ha ha. That happened to me, too. (Colostomy.) And sometimes it feels like I'm going to poo. (I don't, though. But mucous is still produced by the colon and it can come out.) I was quite surprised by my passing of gas from my disconnected rear, and a bit worried, so I asked the surgeon via the patient portal, and he wrote back saying it was normal and everything was fine.

@@cockeyedoptimista Thanks for the feedback. I called my GI Doc when this happened the nurse said to contact the surgeon, so it did. They said the call your GI Doc. So I was left hanging. Thanks to you now I know. 😊

@@carolbrown4490 It's great when they send you around in circles, huh. Here's what the surgeon wrote, in part: "It is absolutely normal to have the sensation of having to have a bowel movement from the residual rectum as it is passing some air also mucus sometimes may be expelled. None of the things you have described to me are abnormal." -- I had asked about gas mostly but he addressed both. Thanks for Your feedback. I'm surprised you still didn't have that info. But at least you probably knew you were okay. Seems to happen to me if I can't digest some things easily. It's weird! I still don't understand how farts could happen but I think the intestines still respond to stuff even if they're not connected.

Hi Girl, looking great, I have an uristomy pouch, sometimes I can smell "something" I use eucalyptus oil, not on my pouch, as I think it weakens it but on the inside of my pants in front of pouch, works for me 😊

Thank you Amber, but I've read some folks input on the net saying that we shouldn't use anything in our bags that we wouldn't ingest. I think mineral oil is okay but is the lavender okay? 💜
@OstomyDiaries
@OstomyDiaries 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I’m not sure! I’ve never heard that. Many companies sell deodorizer that is safe for bags but definitely not something you should ingest. I’ve never had issues with baby oil or deodorizer, but everyone’s situation is different! 😊💜

You could use olive oil. I would suggest a spray or a dropper bottle. But bag supply companies can provide you with a lubricant (I am in the UK).

I’ve never heard this either. I use M9 odor eliminating drops in my bag all the time but I definitely wouldn’t drink them.

My stoma/wound care nurse told me to use baby oil bc my insurance won't pay for that super-expensive lubricating oil. She's a nurse at a highly reputed hospital. I haven't used it yet because I didn't like having feces-infused oil dripping around the bathrooms. But Amber's recommendation might change my mind. Some bags are slipperier than others; the Coloplast ones glide well. Pancaking hasn't been a huge issue, and I also rinse the bag with water sometimes.
