Yeah, back when I joined into this game, I also joined cuz of anime obviously, but only, because I wanted to play the game. After I started to map, it really didn't matter to me if I played anime songs or not, as my primary objective was to map songs what I really liked and which I can understand as well. I really dislike how people use speedranking now as a normal thing these days though, be the mapper experienced or not. Imho, there should be a rule, that the map needs to be pending for at least 1 week, before it can get nominated. Leaves more room for BN's to help other mappers as well, not just help in speedranking and make the experienced people's maps qualified in freaking 1-3 days. Just look at the ranked section nowadays, I really wonder how high the favoritism has become.

I don't really agree with Doormat's conclusion about the prevalence of anime being a good thing. I played EBA before Ouendan or Osu, and played GH casually before that, so you can guess my tastes lean more towards western rock, punk, even VGM. I find it hard to find maps for those tastes that weren't from ten years ago, or are kinda shit, and I feel pretty isolated from the community being someone who keeps up with maybe one anime per season, if any. While Osu's heavy focus on Anime OPs does generate a community of like-minded players, it alienates people who are interested in the rhythm games, but not the music. If Osu had a more balanced playerbase, they would likely splinter off into genres for Anime, Rock, Memes, etc., so you'd still be able to play with people with similar tastes. But playing with someone with different tastes, while pretty awkward, exposes you to music you might find you like. I can only see a more diverse community being a good thing, though achieving that would be problematic when the anime players are already so prominent. I want to get started in mapping for Osu to try and bring my more "western" tastes into the game's library, and I'd love if that magically makes the game blow up with new players and solves world hunger, but I think being the reason one new player gets into the game by playing their favourite song is good enough. I know, I'm so fucking humble, validate me please.

The thing that completely turned me off osu! is the overload of anime songs, they're just everywhere it's boring. I'm not saying they're trash, I understand some people like some sort of music genres but for me, they just all sound the same and I now rarely play osu! because of this.
