There is a misunderstanding among fans of the English dub. They believe that the English dub (specifically the dub starring Chris Sabat, Sean Schemmel, etc., and with music by Bruce Faulconer) made Dragon Ball Z a success in the West. But DBZ was already a hit with Western audiences during its early English dub with Ocean Cast. Even before then, it has been a long-standing favorite in its native Japan and other countries, contributing to its global appeal. So, given its popularity worldwide and the change in the English dub in the middle of its run, DBZ would've been a success no matter how the English dub was made.

When even the Big Green and Speedy dubs are more accurate a lot of times, you’ve got a problem. The US dub is nothing other than an invalid alternate version, relative to what the series actually is, and it’s nowhere near the level of other accurate dubs from its time. The only good English dubs of DBZ are the Ocean-Pioneer movies (1-3). The company that only got it via nepotism wouldn’t have done a better job than Viz, Pioneer, ADV, AnimEIGO, or any of the other more qualified players out there. If only Harmony Gold didn’t get the license and then sit on it for so long.

DBZ Sub VS Dub videos/debates from older fans are really fascinating to me. My first exposure to DBZ was the shitty widescreen version on DVD when I was 5 years old. On those DVDs the default audio track was the Funimation dub with the Kikuchi Score. I loved the soundtrack and for about 10 years I never even knew there was a separate American Soundtrack outside of the instrumental theme that replaces Cha La Head Cha La in that version of the dub. It's an awfully written version of the scene, but the "hope of the universe" speech feels so hollow with the American soundtrack, while Kikuchi's Genki Dama theme fits that triumphant super hero vibe Funimation was going for when they rewrote the scene. Finding out how much things were changed with Z's Dub script while also finding out that the soundtrack originally was one of the things changed makes it feel like I grew up with a strange in-between of the Japanese and Funimation versions. I should also add that the Kikuchi score was a big reason why I wanted to watch DBZ in Japanese. While the dub is available with the Japanese soundtrack the music is in pretty low quality in certain scenes, and almost every vocal and insert song were removed (With the exceptions of Battle Point Unlimited, Solid State Scouter, and the credits themes). Wanting to rewatch DBZ with a more complete and higher quality soundtrack is half the reason I watched the series in Japanese, and it's my preferred way of watching it now.

The dub and the sub are two completely different shows, it's why the Western audience has an entire different perception to the series than the Japanese and Eastern audiences do.

I’ve watched all dubs while I love all Z is my fav bcuz I grew up wit it. I understand the jap is better and Kai I can’t deny that but I just love the Z dub

The difference between the shows is that the eng dub sounds more like a typical saturday morning cartoon but with more violence while the original sounds like a Kung fu movies x Godzilla and Star Wars. The right way to get into it is to look at it as a "strange vintage release" also the way they talk in the show makes it more serious rather then the "americanized" way of speaking. Vegeta sounding like a '"biker idiot" rather then a noble with a superiority complex, Bulma is almost ok , Gohan is more formal and polite in original which makes his SSJ2 more "rude" when compared , Trunks is also formal and polite

To be fair, the original dub’s version of the scene where Kuririn lets Vegeta go at Goku’s request-the version where they’re voiced by Terry Klassen, Brian Drummond, and Ian Corlett-is somewhat passable. It sort of hacks together FUNimation’s made up “Show him mercy, Krillin; we’re better than that” reasoning and the original dialogue, wherein Goku tells Kuririn the made up thing, then says “Yeah, but I admire his super strength, because you see, I am also a Saiyan.” The uncut redub just goes with the made up thing, and it’s infuriatingly annoying. Were they just allergic to making a good script?

Im glad someone finally pointed out how stupid Vegeta being forced into violence and serivng frieza is. The saiyanz were already serving fireza and were blood-thursty murderers to begin with. Frieza forcing vegeta into being a cold blooded murderer is a gigantic plot hole

Idk which is worse, either this or the 90s french dub. Because the latter one messed up a lot of the terminology to "simplify" the series to a youger audience. For example, they called the saiyans space warriors and changed some techniques's names to a more descriptive and utilitarian ones (masenko->magic beam) The worst of all is that this version was used in almost all Europe, polluting the spanish, portuguese, catalan, galician and polish dubs for instance.

there's a reason a lot of the games that followed the Z story is accurate to JP version and not the funi dub version cus the og dub sucked. even the English VAs thought it was bad THANK U FOR TALKING ABOUT THE SSJ2 TRANSFORMATION It's my fav moment too, and while i like the narrator at the end better than Kai and the pacing was better than Kai's sped up version, The inner monologue made no sense and was really stupid because Gohan and 16 NEVER FUCKING INTERACTED BEFORE. Unlike Kakarot where they had a few gameplay scenes or whatever that was added in but even that was a nothing burger. so that inner monologue of Gohan's wasn't earned and should've been silent. I'm glad the Kai version kept it silent

Good video, in the dub Goku is pretty much just a Superman ripoff. In the Japanese and the Manga Goku is a more complex character and even makes some questionable moral decisions like letting Vegeta live and giving Cell a Sensu Bean. Thankfully the Funimation cast got to redeam themselves with a much more faithful dub in Kai's dub.

Kai maybe be accurate, but it too often served as a detriment. In an effort to be "source accurate" dialog would often become over-complicated or outright convoluted. Prime example of this is Vegeta's asking Android 19 about fear. In Z, he's smooth and to the point In Kai, he's mush-mouthed and too "wordy" There are many MANY instances like that in Kai.

People can hate the funi dub but it's what got most of my generation into DBZ, where the translation was bad or not. I figured by now in 2020 whatever that we know the old dub is bad. But hadn't we just accepted that and that's kind of it's charm? I go back and watch DBZ from time to time, to relieve my childhood. If I need an accurate version, I'll read the Manga or to an extent Kai cause it's more accurate than the old dub. People really need to stop just hating on it simply because it doesn't get everything right. If you don't like it that's fine, but it was literally one of the main reasons it took off here in the states on toonami. Most people my around my age, 30, fell in love with dbz on toonami and as they got older realized it might not have been the most accurate portrayal but it is why we loved dbz nonetheless. And yes im the dub guy but I also appreciate and enjoy the sub just as much. It took my longer than I care to admit but watching the sub I never felt like, holy shit I can never watch dbz again cause its clearly just trash. That'd be stupid.

@Tehutidg07 I think ryo horikawa is the best, especially in original DBZ. But Drummond is better than sabat. I think both are too raspy but Drummond's voice is a lot more unique and fitting. Sabat's generic trucker voice does not fit vegeta or piccolo. How do you look at vegeta, a buff midget prince and think he should have a super deep voice? Drummond got the scheming aspect right, as did Horikawa. But Horikawa was the only one to actually make him sound princely. Sabat does neither and is so miscast.

He got much better with time I'd say. His old Vegeta really has this problem of sounding stiff, like he's maintaining this voice more than he's acting. With Kai, he keeps the gruff scratchiness but the acting is much more natural.

This is my favourite way to rewatch the Dragon Ball Franchise everytime i get the chance: 1. I start with the OG DB in the English Dub, i love the english dub in there; Stephanie Nadolny did an excellent work on Kid Goku being a Country Naive Wild Child. While Sean Schemmel on the other hand did a 180 turn on Adult Goku making Goku sound like a Super Hero like Superman, Batman or Captain America. 2. I kick off Original Dragon Ball with the Course of the Blood Rubies instead of the very first Arc (Hunt for the Dragon Balls was ''meh'') , then i move on w/ the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai > Sleeping Princess In Devil's Castle Movie > Red Ribbon Army arc & Fortuneteller Baba mini arc > 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai > Piccolo Daimaoh > Path To Power & Mystical Adventure Movies > 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. 3. Time for ''Z'': Dead Zone Movie w/ Ocean Dub > Saiyan Arc on the original DBZ run (not Kai) SUBBED > World's Strongest Man & Tree Of Might Movies also w/ Ocean Dub. 4. Namek Arc in the Kai Version, just that i skipped the Gyniu Force (never liked them, nor the concept) and watch the Bardock Father Of Son Goku OVA instead, go back to Kai when Vegeta caughts Dende, Gohan & Krillin summoning Porunga, the Elder Namek dies & Frieza finally approaces. 5. I'm the only fan who loves Garlick Jr so i rewatch the Dead Zone Movie this time Subbed cuz i like to rewatch the Garlick Jr Mini/Filler Arc next. 6. I switch back to the first episodes of the Android Arc from the OG Z run because of the Banger Future Trunks's Music theme song, then i keep going w/ the Kai version. 7. After episode 65 of the Kai version i watch The History Of Trunks OVA & Super Android 13 Movies. 8. I keep going with the Cell Arc but on episode 92 i skip it and switch back on episode 184 of the original Z run because of the Banger SS2 Gohan Transformation. 9. Close up the Android & Cell Sagas w/ the Kai Version (Subbed of course) and finally i tune into the Bojack Unbound Movie................... and that's the end of Dragon Ball for me. I like the Afterlife Tournament but no so much, and i don't even wanna start with the Majin Buu Arc; i just hated how come they ruined Dragon Ball's ending that way.

The only english dub that's good is ocean dub, especially in the first 3 movies. Funimation dub is so dry and bland in all versions kai, Z etc. The voice acting in ocean dub is 1000 times better and the voices fit the characters more as well as the intense sound effects. James Ian Corlett or Peter Kelamis as Goku is leagues above sean. Brian Drummond as Vegeta is flawless chris sabat is very overrated. And Scott McNeil as Piccolo is truly iconic. Also David Kaye as Recoome is way better than that horrible voice in Funimation by chris sabat.
