In the old days. 1980 to 1999. The model kits were solid white. Also. The fiber optic Star Trek ship kits were in one box. I still have two Star Trek DS9 Terok Nor fiber optic space station. fiber optic Enterprise 1701 wrath of Kahn refit. In 1993. I went to a model shop and ordered telephone fiber optic strands from a company in New Jersey and designed my own Wrath of Kahn uss Reliant using circuit boards from Radio Shack. I also designed fiber optic. Jupiter 2. DS9 Rubikon Runabout. USS Enterprise E from First Contact. Battleship Yamato. I ordered it from Japan. The company at that time. 1994. Only made 3 kits per year. Extremely fiber optic detailed. Instructions are written in Japanese. But. I've been a serious kit builder since I was 13 years old. I'm 54 now. Kit building is very therapeutic and teaches you to have patience. Extremely good hand eye corrodnitation. It helps you train your Brain to build problem solving nural pathways that will benefit you as you get older in life. In my personal opinion. If you have a love for kit building. You. Like myself. Will become a "thinker" in life. Most people act first without thinking then blame others when things go wrong. Modelers. We are one of a kind. Problem solvers.

I’ve got this ship… in Star Trek Online. Being able to fly and fight the ship is better than a plastic model that just catches dust (and I used to be a big kit maker in my youth so it’s not envy… and yeah, I used to hate dusting my models without breaking delicate parts off).
@Rigel_Chiokis2 жыл бұрын
Back in the 1990's I was building the re-release kit of the Millenium Falcon. That version did not include the lighting kit that the original did. I also realised that the plastic was thin enough the lights would shine through it. I solved it by first, spraying the interior with a matt black (Testors paint applied with an airbrush). After that dried, I then sprayed over that with Testors silver paint. I thought the black would help block the light while the silver would reflect it around the inside of the model. I don't know if both layers were necessary (I would go with just the silver maybe) but it worked very well. The light only showed where I had the fibre optics, not through the plastic where the bulbs were.

How have the stock Polar Lights LEDS held up over time? Mine have dimmed to almost nothing after running them continuously for several hours after the build. Then they started blinking randomly. I luckily hadn't glued the nacelle halves together and I replaced the LEDS in there with a new kit supplied by PL. What I found was the motors had actually melted the plastic holders. So when I fixed it, I took the motors out. I replaced the harnesses with new. They've started to dim out again unfortunately. The lights in the saucer and engineering hull are starting to go too. Altogether, I've got less than 100 hours on these LEDS. It's frustrating.

Videos like this showcase the fact that these kits really should be tested/vetted by fans and builders in the same way that video games go through play-testing or movies get preview audiences. Every single model kit on the market from Star Trek to Gundam is accompanied by no less than 30 KZbin videos of fans and builders modifying these kits just to get them up to screen-accurate snuff. Many of them having to resort to off-the-cuff DIY ideas like you did with your nacelle lights. There's no reason why these kits shouldn't come screen-accurate ready for the money we're dishing out.

Of course when I got the model again a few years later I was a little annoyed I had to spend another $60 on the aztec decals.

You know, the work you did was outstanding on this model. That's why I have to wonder why the glaring mistake of the busard collectors rotating in the wrong directions, they should rotate toward each other, not away. I realize this is a Fantasy, but let's get our fantastical ducks in a row. Polar Lights and AMT have always been hit or miss when it comes to Star Trek kits, so they need to get their model making ducks in a row also, for the money that the public has to pay for these kits, the kits themselves need to be much better.

The water slide problem have been fixed since the 1st batch and the corrected instruction for those that got the 1st batch have been on their website for months. I think the cost of this kit in UK is disgusting. Average cost £80, not including anything else. In the States cost varies a bit but in around 45 to 54 Dollars. Now I get that Polar Lights trade cost plus import costs, and importers profit, plus model stores profit wont allow a Dollar to Pound pricing, but £80 is a rip off in my opinion, and the low blow is they expect you to pay more for the missing decals. Yes I say missing as not including the aztecs, which they have in the past included, strikes me as exploitative. The lighting kit is over priced as well, even taking the bussard collector motors into account. I managed to find the kit in Europe and paid £60, which is better, but still too much. I recall buying Startrek models back in the 70s, 80s and 90s and similar sized kits cost nothing near these prices. The Ktinga class Klingon Battle Cruiser kit that came out a year ago was something I would like, but £150, not including lighting kit. Sorry nope, not going to happen. Nice video, build, and background music.

I got mine for $45 on Ebay and it came with a 1/1000 Enterprise Refit kit with battle damage decals. It was $45 for both as the refit kit usually retails for around $30. I might think about the light kit later.

Components for model kits like this are sold separately for a reason. Some people may not want to light their models for whatever reason. Or some people think that they can light the kit better than the 'official' light kit. Same with decals, some people may not like wallpaper decals for whatever reason and again, others may think that they can do better. This happens across the full range of kits, from ships to planes. I may not like or want the 'official' photoetch set to an airplane. By selling these items separately, a modeler has more choice on their own project, commitment and budget.

For the bussard collectors I painted just the inner part of the cup. Not the outer part as for the power supply for the starship they are both being run by separate power supplies.
