In this video I review the OTOFIX D1 Pro OBDII diagnostic scan tool. This bidirectional scan tool is a step up from the Autel 808 (or OTOFIX D1 Lite) series of scan tools. It has a larger screen, bigger and faster processor, newer Android operating system, faster Wifi, double the RAM and storage, larger battery, and it even has a few more features and functions. This automotive scanner is terrific! It's an OTOFIX branded tool that is made and sold by Autel, and it runs on Autel software. The OTOFIX line of tools is an excellent and affordable way to get access to Autel software, AND you get those software updates free for TWO years, instead of only one year. If you're in the market for a new scan tool, the OTOFIX line of scan tools should be near the top of anyone's consideration list.... especially the D1 Pro as shown in this video. It's a REALLY good solid scan tool. Be sure to check it out!
Thanks!

I was just in contact with the OTOFIX people (via email) earlier this morning talking about Black Friday deals. This will be my 2nd bidirectional scan tool purchase pretty soon. I had an Xtool D8BT. Got a great deal on it, and it seemed OK, but I had a hard time telling the difference from my free FORScan software for my 2006 Navigator. The D8 has quirks that I didn't like - it seems like every change while working within the unit required a vin rescan. Some features were not very polished - I've been working on my air suspension, which I could activate with the Xtool D8 but pressing a button bumped it out of the mode I was in. Doing a height trim meant pushing the 'down' button, get bumped out, then get back in to hit 'stop'. Got tired of it and just sent it back. I watched you review of the OTOFIX D1 Pro, which sounded good. I've been mechanicing every inch of on my own cars since the 1970'sm but the D1 is easier on my 'advanced' DIY budget - one thing I've learned - all those bragged about features are not necessarily accessible based on the car you're scanning.
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 9 ай бұрын
Correct. The "bragged about" features are only good if the vehicle is already programmed from the factory to accept those features. The examples I like to use are things like DPF, which stands for Diesel Particulate Filter. I would be crazy to think the scan tool could force a DPF regen on a gasoline truck that does not even have a DPF to begin with. Or things like EPB, which stands for electronic parking brake. My Old GMC truck has a cable operated drum parking brake with exactly zero wires going to it, How would a scan tool operate that old parking brake? It can't. There are many vehicles on the road that can't take advantage of even half of those "bragged about" features because they simply do not have the hardware or software to make it happen. I have found that A LOT of people do not fully understand that there is no magic when it comes to scan tools. Absolutely EVERYTHING that a scan tool can do on any give vehicle via active testes, special functions, resets, relearns, etc, etc... everything has to be already pre programmed into the vehicles computer to begin with from the factory by the software engineers. If I'm plugged into a vehicle and I have the option to perform a cylinder balance test, it's because the engineers at the factory wrote the cylinder balance test option into the vehicles computer to begin with..... The scan tool is simply a user interface that allows a human to request those features. The scan tool isn't doing anything but sending the request. The computer in the vehicle is actually running the test and then displaying the results on the screen of the scan tool. I get a lot of questions from people that will ask something like.... "can this scan tool do a certain function on a certain make/model?" and I have to reply with... "probably.... if your vehicle was programmed from the factory to allow a scan tool to request that feature, then yes, it should be able to do it". Just because I can cycle through and toggle on/off individual fuel injectors (for example) when I am plugged into vehicle X, that doesn't mean I will have that same functionality when I am plugged into vehicle Z..... and that WON'T be the scan tools fault. It just means that the manufacturer for vehicle Z did not write that feature into the software from the factory. A scan tool cannot request or command a feature and/or function that does not exists to begin with. Another common example, I get people who will ask.... "will this scan tool display transmission temperature on Y vehicle? And my answer has to be.... " if your vehicle has a transmission temperature sensor physically installed somewhere in your transmission AND it's also a data PID that is monitored by the computer in your vehicle, then yes, this tool should display that data in the live data menu. If no temp sensor is present, then the scan tool cannot display data that does not exist in the vehicle computer. I see a lot of people complaining about scan tools... and these complaints can be found for ANY brand of scan tool.... complaints about certain features not working are the most common. And I always have to wonder if the person received a defective tool, if the complaint is indeed genuine, or if the complaints are from people who have a false understanding of how scan tool work? The people who post those complaints may not have any idea that the scan tool is actually working properly but the particular vehicle they're working on does not support the feature they are looking for.... and now somehow it's the scan tools fault. With all that said, yes I do understand that all brands of scan tools can have glitches, and they can all struggle with certain make/models. There is NO perfect scan tool. Let us know if you order a new D1 Pro. Thanks for the comment.

Right on Brian, Excellent, and thorough as always. This looks top of the line spec. However, I just can justify spending $1,000 for 2 years of full functionality before cost prohibitive "updates" are needed. I guess that would be OK if you're the average DIY, and not working on "new" cars every year. Have you ever seen one of these "top of the line" 10 inch screen scan tools that have free lifetime updates? I'm guessing no, but that's what I would want to buy. -Chuck
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 10 ай бұрын
This tool does cost a bit more than the tools from the next level down, like the 808 series.... But even if you don't look at the extra functions, just the larger screen, bigger battery, with more RAM and a larger/faster processor makes the extra cost worth it in MY BOOK. I'm not saying it's for everyone. It's kinda like buying a new pair of pliers.... You can go to Harbor Freight and buy the cheapest pair of Chinesium pliers on the market OR you can spend all the money on a similar pair of pliers from the Snap on truck. Both pliers will do the same job (probably) but one of them costs 10X more than the other..... And people buy new Snap on pliers every day. Some people like buying/having/owning/using nice things. It's the men's version of women who buy designer cloths. lolol. Some people love designer items, some people don't give a rats ass about designer items.... and none of them are wrong. lolol. And no, I have not seen a 10+ inch scan tool with free lifetime updates. Keep in mind, scan tool companies don't really want to sell updates, they want to sell scan tools. There is a reason why it financially makes more sense to buy a new scan tool every two years (especially for a mechanic who makes a living with these tools) than just buying the updates. The scan tool manufactures could easily offer free lifetime updates to their buyers but I don't know of any who have yet. The price of these scan tools has steadily came down over the last 5 years, and the features and functions have steadily increased over that same time. There are so many scan tool companies now and they're all competing for the same customer. I am guessing in another 5 years, we'll all be using 12" Autel Maxisys Ultra's (or similar) with free lifetime updates. As soon as one company offers a certain feature or function, the rest of them quickly follow so they don't lose any potential customers. They're all in a race to see who can offer the most "scan tool" for the cheapest price. Just keep watching... free lifetime updates on these higher-end scan tools will happen eventually. And as always, thanks for the nice comment Chuck. I always appreciate it!

That bad boy is quick. Good to see the tech advancing like that! I'll be sticking with the D1 Lite but if I had a daily need for a scanner, this is the one to get. I do wonder if they will add the Topology feature like someone else mentioned. Might be worth asking Otofix/Autel if they plan on adding it in the future. For some people that might make the difference between buy/not buy.

It is quick, that's for sure. I honestly never even thought of the missing topology feature. I normally use the MK908 that I showed in this video and that hasn't been updated since topology was invented. The 908 scan tools sold today may have topology, but mine does not.... so I am use to not having topology. My Topdon Phoenix Lite has it, along with a few other XTOOL models but I don't use them regularly. I will send my contact at OTOFIX an email asking about the possibility of the topology feature being added to the D1 Pro. I will report back here to let you know what I find out when I get a reply from OTOFIX. Thanks for the comment.

@@Sae-fu5ch I did email my person at OTOFIX and I asked about the possibility of adding the topology feature to this device. I even explained how some of their competitors are now offering topology on comparable (and cheaper) scan tools. Of course the person I deal with does not have the authority to make those decisions but he assured me that he would pass along my thoughts to the people who do have that authority. He also told me that there is no current plan already in place to include topology so if it does eventually come to the D9 Pro, it's probably going to be a little while. Short answer..... No topology yet, but there is a possibility it may come in the future. No official plans to add topology to the D9 Pro at this moment. Thank you for your great video. My question is : is it possible to use the tablet to do other things ? Watch youtube, download other applications for example? Or is it limited only for the use of the otofix application?
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 2 ай бұрын
It is possible to use it for other things. However, keep in mind, it's made and sold to be used as a scan tool. OBD2 scan tools do not require much "computing power" so therefor things that require higher levels of computing power (higher than a scan tool) will not function as smoothly as they would on machines with better specs. Some scan tools do not even have a built-in speaker. (I can't remember right now off the top of my head if the D1 Pro has a built in speaker) Also, MOST scan tools are not running the most current version of Android, so apps that DO require the most current version may not even run at all. And lastly, most of these Android tablets that are sold by Chinese manufactures seem to never include the Google play store app winch makes it more difficult to install apps. You can always side load apps through the web browser from various other Android APK sources so the lack of play store app usually is not a problem. I will say, the scan tools that DO allow you to freely use your Android scan tool tablet as a basic android tablet, that I know of, are Autel, OTOFIX and Xtool. All other brands of Android scan tools (that I have used) such as Topdon, Launch, Foxwell, etc... do NOT openly allow you to use the tablet as a tablet..... even though the background operating system is Android. They try very hard to block basic Android usage. My final thoughts are..... If you buy one of these and plan to also use it as your daily modern Android table, I would NOT recommend it. If you plan to use it 99% of the time as a scan tool, with basic web browsing on the rare occasion, that is what these are really meant for. If you want a fully usable, powerful, Android tablet for daily use, that can ALSO act as a scan tool, you might want to look at buying the XTOOL A-30M, and supplying your own high end tablet. It's an OBD2 dongle that you use with either your cell phone or tablet. I made a video about this using my Samsung Tab S6 (the $900 non-Lite, non-FE version from several years ago) and that thing screams right along as a scan tool, and even faster as a normal Android tablet. I hope this reply helps you decide what is best for you. My A-30M video can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKHap5yeq7CVrpo Thanks

Great Review! A few questions does this unit have the ability to cylinder balance and compression testing if the vehicle its connected to has it programmed? Also the scope listed to use for it (mp408) shows as dis continued. Do they max another model? Also do plan on testing the XTool D9s Pro? Any thoughts on it? Thank you!
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 6 ай бұрын
Yes, this tool has those abilities as long as the vehicle also has those abilities. As for the scope, I just looked and it does indeed show that it has been discontinued. I have no inside information but I suspect if the MP408 has been discontinued, then they must have a new replacement model coming soon, which I was not able to find. My guess is that it will be coming soon. Maybe they're trying to sell out the older MP408 inventory before the new model is released. I did a review of the XTOOL D9 Pro a few years ago. I have NOT tried the new D9S yet but I'm sure it's better than the previous version. Both the D7S and the D8S have been better than their previous versions. I have not heard yet if the new D9S will also come out with a WIFI VCI version (D9W) like the D7W and D8W, but I am guessing it will sooner or later. Right now, in late 2023, especially with you looking for the ability to work with a lab scope, this OTOFIX D1 Pro (or above) or a mid to higher end Autel is probably the way to go for you. I don't believe XTOOL sells a compatible lab scope for their scan tools. (I could be wrong). Plus, Autel is one of the few scan tools that has the ability to work your an AutoAuth account required to work on 2018 and new FCA vehicles. (or a 12+8 cable, which can be a pain in the but) I'm sure XTOOL will have AutoAuth capabilities sooner rather than later but nothing has been announced yet. I hope this info was helpful. Thanks.

Well, the 808 TS has full TMPS capability built-in and the D1-Pro does not. Most guys don't care about have full TPMS capabilities built into their scan tool because most guys either don;t do tire work, or if they do, they use a stand alone TPMS tool. If you don't care about TPMS, the D1 Pro is better for many reasons..... larger screen, bigger battery, better (quicker) Auto scan, quicker processor, etc... and it does have a few more features an functions over the 808, mostly on foreign cars. If you watch my D1 Pro VS D1 Lite video you'll see a how the D1 Pro is better. The D1 Lite, software wise, is almost exactly the same as the 808 family of tools... Minus the TPMS capability, of course. Thanks for the question.

Did you install the "system updates" first, before installing the Gm updates? There had to be a glitch with your installation... This is Autel software and if the GM updates are broken, then thousands of Autel and Otofix scan tools aren't working with GM right now. And if that is the case, you can bet a "fix" update will be sent out immediately. There has to be a simple explanation. Thanks for he comment.

Probably, but not nearly as easy. The problem is.... All of these scan tool are Android based but some brands try to lock down the operating system so only their scan tool app, along with maybe a few others will work on the scan tool. Launch and Topdon are this was.... at least the ones I've used, anyway. They make it hard to use the scan tool as if it's just an android tablet. However, brands like Autel, OTOFIX and XTOOL do not do this. It is VERY easy to side load any app onto an OTOFIX, Autel, or XTOOL. These are simply Android tablets, with a scan tool app built in. Keep in mind, even the OTOFIX, Autel and XTOOL scan tools don't always run the latest Android operating systems like most cell phones do so some apps may not work. If you're trying to run an app that requires the absolute newest operating system and tons of RAM and processing power then most likely it will not work. On the flip side, if you're trying to run a basic inspection camera app, then you shouldn't have any trouble. Thanks for the question.

Can this scan tool access the TPMS computer for diagnostics and program with new sensor ID's?
@SlipFitGarage

This tool has limited TPMS capability. Or, should I say, this tool has the same TPMS capability as any other scan tool that does not specifically have "full TPMS capabilites" built in..... Very few scan tools have "FULL TPMS Capabilities". And the scan tools that do, are advertised as having that extra ability, and they cost more compared to the same tool WITHOUT full tpms capabilities. Most guys don't need a full scan tool to ALSO include TPMS because not everyone in the business does tire work.... and the guys who DO perform tire work on a regular basis usually use a dedicated stand-alone TPMS tool, instead. Something like an Autel TS508, for example. I hope that helps.

As far as scanning sensors directly through the tire , we got a couple of those scanners including a Snapon TPMS3&4, a Toyota branded scanner and an Autel TS508. The TS508 is hit or miss with scanning Toyota sensors and is good for activating new MX sensors for install. I have been researching affordable scan tools to supplement the shops sole Snapon Solus to register new sensors to the Toyota cars.

The D1 Pro does NOT have a card slot. (I just physically looked at my D1 Pro) but it does have two USBA ports and one Mini USB port..... The D1 Lite has a micro SD card slot. You would probably need a USBA card reader plugged into the scan tool to use a memory card with the D1 Pro. Thanks

Does it remove the annoying seat belt tones ?
@SlipFitGarage

Only if the manufacturer has programed the vehicle's computer with the option to disable the seat belt tones..... which is 100% dependant on the vehicle year/make/model. In my experience, most vehicles do not have that option.

According the the chart that I put on the screen at the 9:37 mark (upper right corner) it appears this model IS compatible with the Autel MP408 scope. I have not personally verified this with my scan tool as I do not own an MP408, but I do suspect the chart is correct. Thanks for the question.

Oh, that doesn't surprise me at all, especially these days. We are slowly giving up our security and our privacy as time goes by. I'm not a dealer mechanic so any big changes in the automotive world can take a while to trickle down to me. I absolutely hate the fact that a cloud connection is required to operate certain functions WHILE SITTING in the car. It's obvious that the purpose is insidious when you stop to think about it.... there is no need for it, otherwise. lolol. Thanks for the comment!

Hello, I'm not sure which one to buy. The Otofix D1/ D1 Pro or Topdon Phoenix Lite 2. You tried them, what is your opinion.? Greetings from Germany ;-)

Well, if you watched this video then you should already know which one my favorite is. I straight up tell people THIS scan tool is my new favorite. Either the D1 Pro, or even the D1 Max for a few dollars more. Again, this is only my personal opinion... Be sure to buy the scan tool that makes YOU happy. If you decide to purchase the D1 Pro, make sure you check out the link under the video. Right now it appears the D1 Pro is currently unavailable on Amazon right now. I will send them an email to see when they intend to have them back in stock. Thanks

@@SlipFitGarage Thank you for your message. But I have one more question. The hardware of the d1 pro is better than d1! But are the functions of the software also better with the Pro? What more can the Max do? Can this represent per or max vehicle topology?
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 10 ай бұрын
@@marcusdase5914 Honestly, if you have watched my video I have included comparison charts that answer your questions about hardware and software specs. The D1 Lite and the standard D1 are basically the same thing nowadays. At one point (pre July 1st 2022) there was a difference between he D1 Lite and the D1 but after the big Autel updates that gave all 808 scan tools bidirectional control, that is when the difference between the D1 Lite and the D1 went away. So basically the D1 lite and the D1 are the same today. If you dig deep enough you can still find the old marketing material that showed the difference between the two models but those differences are gone today. So, with that said, my comparison chart in the video talks about the difference between the D1 Lite and the D1 pro. I never mention the standard D1 because I don't physically have one, but it's now the same as the D1 Lite, which I do have. Yes, there are a few a few software differences between the D1 Lite and the D1 pro. See my chart for details.(at the 9:37 mark) And to answer one last question..... No. None of these OTOFIX scan tools include topology. To get an OTOFIX scan tool with topology, you would need to buy the OTOFIX EvoScan Ultra scan tool. Which is ridiculous in my opinion considering there are other scan tools in the $800 dollar range that DO include topology. (Phoenix Lite 2 - XTOOL D8) With all that said, Autel/OTOFIx scan tools are still my favorite.... hand down. The Autel software has been refined and streamlined so much over the years that it just works really good. Some of these other scan tool companies are very helpful WHEN you find a software problem.... but only because they are using their paying customers as beta testers. Autel has been around long enough that they don't need beta testers anymore. There is a reason why Autel is probably the most expensive import brand in scan tools. And lastly.... As for topology, unless you need it for a specific reason ,or you've already become accustomed to it, you really won't even notice it's not there. I own several scan tools that include the topology feature, but I never use them while I'm doing automotive repair when the camera is off. You'll see in this video the scan tool that I normally use. It's roughly a 5 year old Autel MK908 that has never been updated. That tool probably includes topology today if you purchased it brand new, but because I've never paid for updates, my 908 does not have that feature and I never find myself needing, or looking for it. To each his own. Thanks for the question. Brian.

@@SlipFitGarage Good morning Brian and a big thank you for the information. Yesterday evening I bought a D1 Pro on ebay Germany for €570 with 2 years of updates, the price is just great. Since I'm from Germany, I didn't buy via your link. Please forgive me ;-) . The package should arrive tomorrow and I'm excited. I had an Autel DS808BT until last week. The software is almost the same, but the hardware was old and slow. I hope the D1 Pro is a small step forward and has a few more features. I drive a VW Phaeton and many obd tools reach their limits. No, unfortunately it does not. I have told the people at OTOFIX that they really should include topology on this model since other scan tool in this price range DO have topology. Unfortunately, the people that I deal with at OTOFIX are only sales people. I don't know... I have no inside information... But it's like the beer companies... Why does COORS also make and sell Keystone? Why does GM make and sell Chevy and GMC trucks? Why do brand name food manufacturers produce their own brand names, AND generic private names for retailers to sell? Why does Coca Cola own 35 (just a guess) different brands of drinks? I assume it's all about gross sales. This way Autel can potentially double their sales with a second brand? Maybe not exactly double but certainly increase overall sales. Like I said.... I have no idea, but I also have no idea why other companies are doing the same thing. There has to be a net positive or nobody would be doing it. Thanks for the comment and enjoy the new scan tool!

@SlipFitGarage 8 ай бұрын
This is totally dependent on the make/model of vehicle that you're plugged into at any given time. On some vehicles it can basically"clone" a module for replacement. But generally, this is not a programming tool. Straight-up "programming" generally requires a J2534 pass through device and a subscription to the vehicle manufacturer's tech site. Most guys I know use a laptop computer for programming. Yes, it CAN be done with certain scan tools, but a scan tool with programming capabilities along with an j2534 pass-through box will probably start around $2500 bucks. Thanks.

I already mentioned this in another reply in this comment section but I will mention it again, here. Copy/paste: I normally use the MK908 that I showed in this video and that hasn't been updated since topology was invented. Thanks for the comment!

Internet connection is a big pass for me. My autel does not require a internet connection to work!!
@SlipFitGarage
@SlipFitGarage 6 ай бұрын
I think you're mistaken.... Are you saying that you would prefer a scan tool that does not have the ability to access the internet? Just for the record, this tool access the internet for a few reasons..... 1) To get updates, that come out almost daily, not once per year. 2) To help the user access the internet via a web browser to search for repair related items, tips, procedures, diagrams, parts, etc... 3) Some (most) new VEHICLES require the scan tool to have access to the "cloud" (via the internet) in order for the scan tool to have full working capabilities. This is a requirement of the VEHICLE, NOT the scant tool. This scan tool itself DOES NOT require the internet to work on vehicles, but some VEHICLES do require internet connection. It's not the scan tools fault. If you're working on a 2013 Chevy truck (for a simple example) there is no internet required. The tool will work 100% with no internet connection. To be absolutely clear, this tools does NOT require an internet connection to work, just like your old Autel does not require an internet connection. It's the new modern vehicles that ruined everything, NOT the scan tool industry. In the future, do not expect to work on any newer cars without an internet connection. Soon, all cars will require the scan tool to be connected to the cloud via the internet. Also, the scan tool in this video IS 100% Autel software. It's the EXACT same software that is loaded into the equivalent Autel scan tool. There is no difference between Autel software that is loaded into an OTOFIX scan tool, vs the Autel software that is loaded into an equivalent Autel device. And lastly, if you REALLY hate the internet that badly, you can simply turn off wifi and the tool will no longer have the ability to connect to a network. And if that still isn't safe enough , then simply NEVER enter a network name and password into the device and then even if the wifi is turned on, it still won't be able to connect to ANY network without a valid password. All modern mid level thru pro level scan tools have the ability to connect directly to the internet.

@@SlipFitGarage Edit. Just realized this was about d1 pro. Guess I'll leave comment anyways. Thanks. Just got an autel im508s and it requires internet to program keys but not the diagnostic side. I would assume im1 is the same. I wish autel had some of features of im1 but im1 requires 69 bucks for additional key programming on some vehicles. Plus the 140 for diagnostic ability. Im508s does not. Got it for about same price after I sell the silly otofix watch that came with it. Got a Phoenix plus also. Took advantage of that eBay 20 percent off they had going plus best offer and got a good deal. Now I have to figure out if I really need the autel or if I should return. The topology is pretty nice on the phoenix have to say. Even worked on my old Saturn Vue.
