We get a lot of trucks coming through the shop for post purchase inspections. A lot of these trucks have over looked maintenance. I thought we'd go ahead and put a video walking through what we look for. Maybe it will help folks with bargaining leverage before the purchase.

Mr. Cairo it’s not the purchase price, it’s the thousands of $ and hours and hours spent weaving a tapestry of profanities in your garage while taking care of the ‘deferred maintenance’ the previous owner didn’t do. I’m hoping to enjoy it this coming year, I’m nearly caught up with the repairs since I bought it in June

Kept the Series 80, to good to get rid of and the price, here in Australia is rising as people realise what an outstanding vehicle they are.

If there is oil dripping off gearbox bell housing I would also check upper oil pan arch near the rear main seal, pretty common oil leak. It looks like a rear main seal but often isn't.

look for chassis cracks at the front upper panhard rod mounting point to chassis, most times handbrake will be not work very good unless genuine toyota handbrake shoes were used and or extended dog bones, front hub flanges where the axle contacts gets slowly impacted until they become pointy and breaks, rear brake proportioning valve leaks quite common

Not sure on the total for everything. I've never had to do an estimate for all of it at once. The average 80 that comes through for a new purchase inspection is usually between 3500 an 5k in catch up maintenance and repairs.

In KY....want to say thanks for the video. Looking at a 1996 LC - no lockers - with 201k miles. I wanted to take this to my mechanic and get it looked over, but would you recommend someone who specializes in 4WD vehicles or can any mechanic pretty much look it over? We plan on hitting road full time. Purchased an Avion travel trailer, a 1 ton Chevy tow vehicle, and now searching for the right 2nd vehicle we will take with us on the road. The 2nd vehicle will be my car to drive to work + our exploring/camping vehicle. We have driven a Sequoia, 4-runner, and now the LC. I love the size of the LC. I am a big fan of older vehicles. They are tough and easier to work on (usually). Currently own a 1993 Chevy G20 van and a 2000 Dodge 3500 van (camping vans). We want 4wd....we want more flexibility on our exploring (not going to do any major off - roading, but the vans due to size and all have limits), own a 2007 Toyota Highlander but made the mistake of not buying 4WD. So if I purchase this LC, it will become daily driver + exploring/camping vehicle. The LC is looking very promising except have learned that LC are all time 4wd.....I am weighing out the down fall of mpg on a daily driver......but that aside, I don't want to get into a total rebuild on a vehicle either. Sorry to ramble....but question #1) I appreciate any input you may have especially finding the right mechanic to give this a going over prior to purchasing it. #2) It currently has like 33" tires on the thing. It looks awesome, but I would prefer to go back to stock size tires. Is this a good choice? Do you see good performance on some kind of a stock AT tire? #3) I tend to keep vehicles for a long time. Worst case scenerio, I buy a LC with high miles, love it, and then time comes it may need, say, a motor. Is it possible to put a motor in these older LC's? What about transmissions? I appreciate you sharing all this great information. Glad I found your channel. Has been very helpful.

Any mechanic should be able to give them a decent once over. Someone specialized in Cruisers will know all the trouble spots to check though. I'd go to Ih8mud.com's clubhouse section and find the club nearest to you. They'll know who the local Cruiser gurus are. Tires I don;t pay a ton of attention to. We don't do them in house so I never really pay attention to what people are running. You can change out the motor and trans. They aren't cheap but it can be done. We've got a couple of engine rebuilds coming in over the next few months.

This is all very useful information but is any of this stuff major enough that it would prevent you from buying a vehicle altogether? Aside from major rust issues, isn't this all maintenance stuff that if a few things are wrong, can easily be made right? It's good to know what's going to need to be replaced after purchase, but what here should I be seriously worried about in terms of buying an 80. Cheers
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on budget and the purchasers ability to work on the truck. Anything can be fixed with time and money. The video is to point out items that will likely need to be addresses so you can either use them as bargaining points or to budget for repairs. I just bought a truck that has just about everything in the video wrong and then some, but I fix them all day long so I wasn't concerned. If I was going to have to pay to have everything repaired there's no way I would have bought the truck I did. If someone was tight on budget a lot of issues could be a deterrent. The only thing that would keep me from buying one at a really good price is holes in the frame.

Ha ha, you know what we'd call that 80 here in the UK? Brand New. Not a lot of rust issues? Oh I wish. We spread salt all over the roads here just in case there's a mild frost. Consequently when we look at an 80 it's a case of trying to find a patch that's not rusty. It's a shocker.
