TLDR: ableton’s multiband crossover filters shift the phase of frequencies, ozone’s doesn’t. /// The reason why you don’t get full null with Ableton’s multi band compressor at no compression is because the band splitting filters which low pass or high pass the sound, are minimum phase, which shifts the phase of the frequencies to do filtering. That’s why it sounds a bit like a static phaser when blended with the dry signal. With the izotope ozone compressor, it’s either a hybrid phase mode where it does perfect-reconstruction IIR (I’m not a DSP expert but what I know is when the bands are summed back with no compression they sum perfectly to the original signal), or linear phase mode which does not shift the phase of the different frequencies you run through he filters.

Discovered a plugin called oxyott by oxydsp and it is literally so identical in sound that it is virtually unnoticeable and it has a linear phase mode which I checked with plugin doctor and the difference is insane

Omg. These are the gems and reason why you should sub to this channel. I’ve always wondered why Ableton MB affected my sound even at 0 and was like I guess it’s supposed to do that.. but my intuition has said “I don’t like that sound” I just never trusted it. Lol.

i like to blast 3 layers of ott + saturation with 36db and some wobbly bandpass autofilter with some more saturation and then reverb so in my case i don't really care about the jank as it's just the part of the sound... but i can clearly see why you're right about every other use case

The amout knob (dry/wet) is just that, the amount it lowers and raises the threshold, nophase problem (besides the phase shift at cross over) if used this way, sounds great in fact. The problems with the preset are if you use it in paralell... But what maniac would do that? As far as the actual phase shift at the cross overs, this is not a bad thing at all neccisarily. Myself and lots of top mastering engineers sometimes use this at 0% specifically for that sound. It can be a good sound, then tickle in a little OTT on top sometimes. You're really shooting yourself in the foot with this stuff if you worry about that phase sound too much.

As a mastering engineer I think you are better of with companders like the function in Satin or Type A from audio thing vs ott/multiband of ableton. My foot is fine but thank you for the comment

If so, I am even more intrigued why you would not agree on a compander vs the multiband of ableton.

Yes it does but a little different. Null test it. It's not flawed in my book though as it's an emulation.

In the days where like 90% of “producers” downloaded craptons of plugins, because they heard some rap, went in, mindlessly set for themselves “the only trve presets”, made xyzBEATS KZbin accounts and started spreading this virus - well... ugh... hmm. I usually use the OTT from xfer on my master as the first thing after a surgical eq, but the thing is it sounds good for me, I know what it does but it really doesnt destroy your mix if you use it gently, at around 10%, and I boost the mid knob very little, as ott seems to take a bit of them away tho. I see your reasons, but imo it can work if used right

@@Catandbeats Yeah, I can say it has flaws but I really like how it kinda glues the mix. I wouldnt really put it on anything else than edm, unless you are going for the sound it gives you. I went through the whole internet on what they say about OTT on master, but all I found was 50% saying its good just keep it low, 50% saying a big no no. I would say this plugin is kinda controversial, It would be interesting to see a newer version of it

@@Catandbeats can't say that it's just those people who use it a lot though, as long as you know how to use it right then it's fine. Mr. Bill in one of his tutorials was saying a cheap way of making a certain type of expensive compressor by literally layering otts with the wet all the way down. I would hope you would agree that Mr. Bill is at the top of his game with what he does. It's not that the tools are bad, it's just you have to know how to use them (like not using them on the master)

@@Catandbeats idrk why it gets the hate that it does. people dont seem to care about using minimum phase filters while EQing. Even putting a kick/bass in phase will have the kick or bass instantly less correlated once they play another note. use something like sound radix pi to eliminate any worry of phase correlated objects

@@nikolaudio minimum phase eq and this "multiband" are two different points. The minimum phase being a lot less important. The multiband of ableton just sucks as a multiband. Great effect for mp3ing your sound. For the rest.. not for your master. Much better free plugins available, like tdr nova.
