The drop shot rig is here to stay. This versatile rig was first only used in deep water. It still shines there but we’ve learned how effective it can be in shallow water too. One of the biggest advantages to this rig is the fact the bait is always off the bottom. On tough to catch bed fish the drop shot can be especially effective.

I’ve always been taught and used the tie on kind for that reason alone mainly, slingshotting or slinging the clip kind of weight. Great tips video for first timer to experienced or expert angler with drop shot keep it up

This video explains drop shotting to a tee, I like using the tear drop weight, but they can get hung up more, I'm going start drop shotting more this year!

Thanks Ott. I will be on the StLawrence later this coming summer. I realize there is a chance I will be fishing current there. Id appreciate some input into the weights for dropshotting in that deeper and/or fast water.

Yes lots of current there. Use a heavier weight in general if you’re out in it. 1/2-3/4 is good. Also if you’re drifting try to keep it as directly under the boat as possible. You’ll spend less time hung up.

I know the fish will be moving up soon. But last few times I’ve been out they’ve been kinda main lake stumps and trees by the creek. I’d let my jerk bait sink and it would draw them out and they’d turn away plus I keep loosing crank baits in that stuff. Wonder if beefed up drop shot would work??

So if you tie the weight on and the weight gets hung, then a fish hit. When you set the hook will it cause you to loose or miss the fish? If you use the pinch weight it would pull through on the hookset if the weight were hung? Am I thinking about this wrong or is this not enough of a problem to matter?

Good question. I think the chance of getting a bite at the same time your weight is hung is so slim you dont have to worry about it.
