Super duper, thank you! The longest trip I've taken was 350 miles from home, and I had a friend who helped me route everything for that one because he knew the roads well. Now he's moved out of state, but I need to travel from Oregon to Pennsylvania, and just trying to find campgrounds is stressing me out (especially since I need pull-through spots). It wasn't that many years ago you could only recommend some of those 'other' and 'honorable mention' apps since there were no real trip planning apps available. I love the information in (and therefore use) both of the 'other' apps and all of the 'honorable mention' apps. So far I have put off actually buying any of the trip planning apps you highlighted because when they were introduced I looked and they were not very easy and/or satisfying to use. After this video I see it's now time for another look. Let's hope that the US-Canada border opens this summer so we all can make use of your suggestions.

Just looked a bit deeper, Hall, and did find this article on the RV Trip Wizard (RVTW) help documents about exporting an RVTW route to a Garmin GPS. It requires using Garmin's Basecamp program on your computer to load the exported RVTW file into... and then get it to your GPS. But it IS possible. docs.rvtripwizard.com/garmin-basecamp

I wanted to ask you a few quesiton please Dyrt. Is says it has gps for the pro but on the Dyrt website they do not show that they have places to put your RV size . I am concern that if this does not have a place to put in my RV size then I might take a dangerous route. 2nd How many stops will it allow you to put in ,, Are the stops unlimited? 3rd .) Does google provide you the data for the points of interest?

At least as of today (2/28/2022), they are separate. Inside Roadtrippers, you can set your RV size & weight parameters and that should help to ensure your trip/route planning takes that into account. But ther’s no direct link with that and their RV GPS app. You have to manually enter individual destinations and it will apply your RV dimensions (entered separately from Roadtrippers) to route you. We expect that they plan to integrate this more seamlessly at some point in the future.

Great Overview! I don’t currently use any true trip planning apps. Which 1(one) would you start with??? I currently use WAZE and the built-in Rand McNally nav system which is horrible but does capture low bridges and wt. restrictions. Do use Campendium, AllStays, Harvest Hosts, Boondockers Welcome and GasBuddy for our full-time roadtripping travel style.

We'd start with The Dyrt. That's because it's so clear and easy to use, and has the longest free trial period, at 90 days with the code. So really no risk If, after using it for a while, you feel you'd like to try other functionality, we'd try Roadtrippers next, which you try out for free, but with the 5-waypoint limitation. The only reason we'd leave RV Trip Wizard for last is because it has a short trial period (7 days) and because it's so full-featured, it can be a bit intimidating to learn. But it does offer the most functionality. Hope this helps!

Hi Guys, Thanks for all of your help getting us ready for full time in September! I have a questions though about fueling. Our rig is similar in size to yours, and I use truck stops for fueling. I would rather not use the truck lanes, but finding diesel in smaller stations is too intimidating for me! I always feel like we are too large for them! How do you manage that? TIA!

Hi Jim! I definitely understand your situation. I realize that my professional driving experience does give me an advantage, and that smaller stations can be intimidating. But I still don't take smaller stations lightly! Here's how we find fuel... we look along our route on Gas Buddy for pricing in the general area we want to fuel up, based on how soon we calculate we'll be needing fuel. We take state lines into consideration, since crossing one is the fastest way to suddenly find more- or less-expensive fuel. Looking at each state's lowest prices on Gas Buddy helps us decide on which side of the line we should try to fuel up. (Always before crossing into Calif)! LOL Once we spot a station with the lowest price along our route, we use Google satellite view and street view to scope it out. We can almost always tell if it's easy in and out, and often even see which lanes have two hoses instead of one (diesel pumps)! There are lots of big-rig stations out there, but everyone needs to stay within their own comfort and ability level. Stay safe!

I’m trying the RV Safe GPS routing 7 day “Free” trial and am extremely disappointed with the routing. We are traveling between Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, VA, and it is routing us all kinds of illogical ways- routing off a main street with visible obstacles onto residential streets that probably have weight restrictions and low hanging trees. In one instance it routed a way that almost doubled our travel time, but I have no confidence it was actually avoiding a low clearance?!? Am I missing something?

We've head so many good things about the RV safe GPS, we can only guess that something is glitching for you... maybe some parameter that's not set optimally?

I have the paid version, and it consistently does the same thing. In both rural and suburban areas, it has done things like taking us off a divided highway to take us through small roads that weren’t suitable for the rig when, had we stayed on the highway, the campground was a mile-and-a-half further on and a right turn. I now consistently have this on my phone and Google Maps on the RV screen via CarPlay so I can compare which upcoming routing makes more sense. It works, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having a dedicated app.

Hi Jim! Great question. We do indeed have some limitations, especially in places like national parks. We always recommend buying the smallest RV you feel you can be comfortable in, and we have been talking about downsizing to a 35 footer or so for a long time, which we think is about the largest you can go and still get into many places like national parks.

Seriously? I have never found diesel anywhere close to being cheaper on gas buddy than with my card. It's not uncommon to save 40+ cents off the posted price. I'm not afraid of truck lanes and keep shoe covers in my RV to put on and take off. I try to fuel a low at off peak times. I have a 200 gal tank and truck lanes can pump fuel faster.

It’s actually a combination of factors for us, Roy. One of the big ones is we stay away from interstate as much as possible, so truckstops aren’t on our normal course of travel. The other is that it’s typical for truckstops to be 30, 40, or 50 cents or more expensive than a gas station we can identify along our route on gas buddy. We’re not talking about stations that are near the truckstops, which aren’t the cheap ones. It’s the ones 30 or 40 miles away where the prices are really great. And it takes a few seconds sliding along your route in the gas buddy app to identify them. Actually, the larger the fuel tank, the better, because we can plot our next fuel stop hundreds of miles ahead with our 150-gallon fuel tank, as you probably do as well. Being a retired professional driver, it makes me uncomfortable every time all the truck lanes are filled and a working driver has to wait for me. Even if we don’t beat the price at a truckstop, it’s so close, but all the other reasons we have for staying away from them make it worth the occasional extra few cents when the gas discount cards provide a slightly lower price. And by the way, we don’t want any of the financial institutions to have our personal credit information or social security numbers, which some of them require, and was the first thing that turned us off to them when we initially began researching them.

@@RVgeeks I am a point A to B guy and travel interstate for 2 reasons, 1. I don't need to worry about underpasses 2. faster, not all the slow downs with stop sings, traffic lights, and 35 mph. The slowing down and speeding back up also hurts fuel economy. I can't tell you the last time we saw trucks backed up waiting for fuel. Most often 1 or 2 deep and often 1 or 2 lanes empty. We've paid as low as $1.49 a gal. on diesel and just paid $2.50. O ya, I opens a special account for fuel. no SSI #
