DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life It was a fantastic adventure! :) I hope that is what my life will be like when I go cruising full-time. I had so much fun, and I met so many amazing people :) I've started a list of boats I can upgrade to in about three to four years. The Westsail 42 is at the top of that list! ;) Only downside is that there are never any for sale in Europe. Importing one from the US is costly and complicated, but I might end up doing that. It seems like there are a lot more awesome cruising boats to choose from in the US ;) I would love to do a video tour of Paragon! :) When you do make your way down here let me know if I can be of any assistance. You've got an interpreter on call if need be ;) And if you've got the time I'd of course love to show the two of you the "real" Denmark :) Knowing that you two watch my videos means a lot to me! Your videos were what inspired me to start uploading videos and also what made me realize that I can archive my dream of becoming a full-time cruiser. If the Advent Chamber Orchestra is actually piped into Paragon’s cabin sound system and softly playing a concerto during an evening voyage planning, then it can only be the result of Mo’s previous refined lifestyle before she teamed up with the Salty Dog Drake! Although I moored in Warick Cove about 20 nm north I always considered Newport my home. Brought back many memories including freshwater showers after a night in the clubs on Thames and the row back to an anchorage to my 23 foot Rhodes design Tempest.

20:08 to 20:35 now that is a trick of editing and special affects. how is it she disappears and reappears while the ncoaa weather forecast audio plays smoothly throughout but timed right at the end when she shuts it off. The editor is pretty darn good (magician) KUDOS !

We actually sail out of Sippican/Marion on our Sabre 30 MK III - there is actually a small designated anchorage inside Ram Island - very protected! No need to anchor out that far! You could even have picked up a free harbormaster mooring there! Cheers

To this day sometimes we still talk about that wicked cool cockpit enclosure that you made for Blue Highway. Since this video was filmed we've sailed over 10,000 nautical miles through Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Faroe, Scotland, Ireland, and we are now planning to sail to Svalbard. We are working hard to produce this series which tells the story of those voyages. I really look forward to the day that we sail back into my hometown of Boston someday. Vsshooter I agree. I am wondering if it wouldn't be more convenient for them to haul in ten pound bags of dried beans, split peas, pasta, rice and dried spices and herbs and make their own soups and stews. Maybe it's a water issue. I thought you could use filtered sea water to boil foods in. The heat kills most bacteria and you get some natural salt flavorings. Those progresso soups make my eyelids puff out and give me tummy aches.

Hello Paragon, For a moment there I thought you guys were arrested for stealing a shopping kart; it looked like you were in the back of a police car. I was later relieved to see that it was only a taxi. :) Episode Idea: I noticed that you had what looked like a wood stove, possibly the “Little Cod.” Being very interested in that type of heating for my future boat, I was hoping that you could review your heating system on one of your future segments. Questions I have: - Do you like the wood stove? - Does it take care of the humidity issue? - Is wood acquisition and wood storage an issue? - How many times a night do you have to get up to add wood? - How difficult was the installation? - Do you recommend a wood stove for us in northern climates? Vic 1775 Hi Vic, thanks for the episode ideas! We love the Little Cod stove. It does help to dry out the dampness and condensation in the boat. Getting wood or other solid fuel has been different in different countries. In Iceland we got free scrap wood from a carpentry shop all winter long. In Ireland you can buy peat or coal at almost every gas station and grocery store for burning in a fireplace or stove. In Greenland and Faroe there are almost no trees because it's too windy for them to grow, and the only wood we've been able to find there has been from shipping palettes, but they burn fast. In Block Island we got a lot of drift wood. In Gloucester my friend gave me a bunch of wood from the tree he cut in his back yard as you'll see in an upcoming episode. We store the solid fuel in big lockers in the cabin and haven't had much problem with condensation getting into it. How often we add solid fuel depends on the type of fuel. A good peat brick can last for hours. Palette wood probably just 30 minutes. The installation was a lot of design, demolition, and carpentry and fiberglass work to build out the area for the stove, and sheet metal work to make the heat shield barrier, but yes I think it was all worth it and I would do it all over again because we love having a wood fire to keep us warm. As a backup we have a diesel fired boiler hydronic heating system (Hurricane II combi)

Hi guys ! great shopping trip. I have a Ramen recipe for you guys : get ramen noodles in a bag{not the cup version } soften it in hot water but not too much "Al dente" strain it and then treat it like pasta ! you can put Alfredo or marinara sauce on it or just some veggies with olive oil garlic and some Parmesan cheese ! Well hope you try the recipe . its faster then boiling regular pasta and I assume it will be a bit hardier then just have the ramen soup .

Moe Jaime We'll have to try that...I like the idea of veggies, garlic and olive oil. I usually add a dab of sesame oil, Sriracha, chili garlic sauce, and a smidge of soy. Then I top it with scallions and frozen peas and fresh shredded horseradish. Yum!

momoparagon yes I like to make Asian style ramen with Sriracha very yummie ! .Ramen is such a versatile noodle and much faster to cook then regular pasta has long has you don't let them get too soft that happens to me sometimes lol ! P.S. if you do the veggie and oil thing don't forget to add the Parmezan cheese lol.

Moe Jaime Drake does all the cooking when we are under way, and plans the meals out so he knows in advance what he is going to be cooking. He's great at cooking delicious and filling food that is also comforting to eat at sea. I'll see if I can put together a few of our favourites...

I film in 1080i and 60 frames per second. Maybe I should go down to 720i. My MacBook Air 120GB hard drive is almost full!

Michael Kallelis Hi Michael, We use a Mac too and Final Cut Pro X. We have two 8TB RAID servers made by Drobo, and a bunch of smaller portable USB drives to hold all the video. I'm always trying to film in the highest resolutions available with whatever camera I'm using, but sometime it can be a real challenge for my older and slower Mac to edit the higher resolutions and frame rates. Michael Kallelis iMovie is awesome! We produced our Sailing Fiona, Sailing Fellowship and Sailing Bella Luna video series with iMovie. After learning iMovie it's much easier to move to Final Cut Pro X which has a lot more features. We would definitely record at 1080p instead of 720p if the computer for editing is fast enough and has enough memory to work with the higher resolution video. I bet there are good iMovie tutorials available at online Apple's App store. Yes, video editing can be so incredibly time consuming! I think you really have to love video production in order to do it well. Otherwise you'd just go crazy and give up because it's so time consuming. Good luck!!! :)

Quick question Drake, what type of solid fuel do you burn in your cabin heater and how to you handle stowage for longer Voyages in higher latitudes ? How do you address moisture concerns in the stowed fuel ? No rush just curious those concerns have me leaning towards diesel with a day tank. Thanks for the answer when you have time.

J James Hey J James, We've used every kind of wood we can find except any wood that was treated with chemicals. In Iceland, we had and infinite supply of free scrap wood all winter from a nearby carpentry shop. In Ireland you can purchase peat in most gas stations and grocery stores and it is available is varying densities. In Block Island and other places we've burned drift wood. We keep the solid fuel in a few big lockers near the stove and haven't had issues with moisture getting into it. In winter we've even kept a stack of wood on the aft deck covered with a tarp. We use the wood burning stove as often as possible because it's a a wonderful cozy heat that dries out the boat and because it's free. But we also have a diesel hydronic boiler (Hurricane II Combi) for cabin heating and for wonderful on demand hot water for showers - one of the best things I ever got for the Paragon.

As for me and my 67 Alberg 30 space is at a premium and in the great lakes in sept. oct. cabin heat is a must. the closer I get to leaving my vast fresh water cruising grounds the later I find myself Up lakes late in the season some times arriving back at my Home port early November. within the next few years I will find my self in the salt at Higher Lats as I have no desire to sail south with the snowbirds. to much graet adventure to sail in the north and myself and S/V Anthony J have been preparing kinda as a wet refit over the last several years the boat is stout and ready and waiting for her skipper to shove off. thanks again and Fair Winds to you and Mo.
