Hello everyone I have a lot of experience with making epoxy tables and varnishing so here is one tip. If you are working with clear epoxy resin, do not use 2K water-based varnish. Each 2K water-based varnish leaves the finish a little hazy. You can use 2K high-gloss polyurethane varnish that is applied in up to 3 coats and then sanded with water sanding up to 3000 granulations and then you need to polish. Greetings from Bosanski Petrovac Bosnia and Herzegovina

Happened to me once also with Poly 2 component coat. Went to sanding with 120 - 180 - 240 - 320 and back to spraying booth. Just working with 3% gloss acrylic coat, comparing raw wood with coated there is no difference, with a 9 grams of white paste per 1kg of acrylic base coat. That is for european beech, for oak a little bit more - 11g per 1kg. Good luck, we know you will deliver. 🤞

As someone who works in the space of timber machining we would skim it with the CNC router table, then sand, fill any imperfections that have risen from dressing then start the process of applying the finishing coats. The only reason not use the CNC router table is if the slab/resin has moved in any way.

Wow, that had to be difficult to see. The table looks great. I look forward to seeing it finished. Hopefully when you sand it down it doesn't take chunks of the epoxy and wood with it. Have you or your dad ever thought about wood blasting with dry ice? It's like sand blasting except it's with small tiny pellets of dry ice. There are companies that will do that but it is kind of expensive.

@AnthonyRGarcia
@AnthonyRGarcia 2 жыл бұрын
I would think that is all that is needed. He even said it felt rough. That would mean the light would reflect off of it making it look dull/hazy. It's a surface texture issue, not a "we left it too long, got scratched, then 'fixed'" issue.

That sucks! The cloudiness gets even worse when you're doing a satin finish. Semi and gloss don't do it as bad, but stain and dull get cloudy very fast when you get putting on to many coats. Time to get the sanders out and go to town.

I’m using poly on some wood plaques. How do I get the perfect final coat? There always seems to be a spot or 2 or 3 that are not perfect. Do I wet sand the imperfections out? If I do that I am getting dull spots…….do I use a higher grit wet sand to achieve the shine or another coat of poly and hope for the best? Thanks for your opinion I asked cus you seem to know what you are talking about.

Good to finally see you guys going with urethane’s. But you have to be cautious with temps, humidity, etc when you spray or you can end up with hazing/milky finish. So, did they apply a polyurethane or a urethane? There’s a tremendous amount of difference between the two and what it needs is urethane. Urethane’s are what is being used to clear coat cars ,paint aircraft, etc and is going to be one of the most durable finishes you can apply but you have to apply it properly and under the right conditions or you will end up with what you’ve got. It can be resolved but it’s time and labor and material you don’t want to invest. A urethane will not be subject to damage from touching either unless someone has sand between their fingertips and the finish. An hour or two after it’s dry, you will not harm it with touch. It’s gonna be gorgeous once it’s like it should be. It should be as clear as It was when it was wet. It’s gonna be absolutely amazing!!

Instead of treating this incident as something that 'just happens sometimes', have you considered changing your processes to account for this? Like putting cloth/cardboard/whatever on top of a finished product so it cannot be accidentally touched while it hangs around waiting for delivery? Or if that isn't an option, putting a ribbon barrier around it? You seem to have plenty of space and the mere existence of such tools already discourage accidental touches, while the ribbon especially would just be an outright call to 'dammit just don't come near it right now'. Adding such preventative measures to your workflow takes maybe a minute or so, but given the nature of your work, would save you a crazy amount of product and manhours to fix. It sounds like whatever paltry sum those materials and procedures could cost you would be earned back in no time as long as they prevent even one incident of this-- and yet your tone implies that these kinds of things are not one-off events.

Don't understand how it could get damaged enough to need a recoat after all the protective coatings was already on it.

Suzuki finish is completely black if you do it right. You char it more, then rub it with a wire brush, dust it off and oil it. Yours still turned out looking great!
