When he does the correct thing it’s just as important to make really excited noises, if not more important than giving treats. They respond to higher pitch noises and register them as positive

Very true, although dogs also respond well to an owner that sounds happy, encouraging and positive - an owner that is always using excitement for a reward can sometimes mean the dog ends up over excited and actually stressed, bless them! This is what I've heard a few dog behaviorists say recently, so wanted to share 😊

Good advice, bathing for sleepy eyes is a bit extreme. Too many baths strip the oils from the dogs skin. Save the baths for the inevitable rolling on dead things. ;)

I taught my dog to tap a bell to go out and she ended up inadvertently teaching my cat to also ring it! For a while it was amazing to see both the dog and cat use it... however after a while I was hearing the bell in my nightmares! I eventually took it off the wall as I couldn't stand it any longer! 😅😅

Hey Lydia, when we got our puppy last May we had her toilet trained by 12 weeks! To do this we took her out every hour to two hours when she was 8-10 weeks and kept using a persistent word for her to get used too. By 12 weeks she would go to the door or scratch at her lead to go out. Just be consistent. I also wouldn't recommend leaving a door open for them to walk in and out. There needs to be a seperation between indoors and outdoors when it comes to toilet training. Best of luck! X

This is the way to go. We trained using training pads then our dig would pee on every mat she saw. Bath mats , door mats etc. Wish we had just stuck to going out every two hours. Love your new edition. Happy parenting.

Hey Lydia, if Porter isn't food driven you can change that by hand feeding and making him work for the food. So he gets the same daily intake but you teach him it's earnt. It puts puppies in good stead for the adulthood, especially when they're off leash outside. A food drive will save your bacon with training later on. xx

I have two Dachshunds, both girls. One is the same colour as Porter and the other is Brown and Tan. Mine are 7 and 5 years old. The girl I have, like Porter, is called Pepper and her personality is exactly like Porter's. She is very cuddly but can also be vocal for attention. The brown and tan one, Coco, is far more motivated by play and food, but she is more quiet. Dachshund's can get separation anxiety so they need toys to chew while you're out. They like to guard but can be intimidated by the size of the house to guard. I find sectioning off the house works and keeping them locked in the back of the house (away from the road, never in the garden) while I'm out works. Good luck with Porter, he looks gorgeous!

He’s adorable 😍 Just a bit of advice: a puppy needs a wee everytime they wake up, after each meal and after each playtime. So if you put him outside on these occasions you will never need a mat. He will get used to do his business outside only and the bell training will be easier too.

Wow 😍I'm in love . Lydia it's been 5 years in June since our Jack Russell named Jacob. He was our baby boy sadly he became seriously ill on his 6 th birthday and we had no choice in the end. Heartbroken we both agreed we could never go through this again when a pets had a full life it's a little easier because that life was full of your love . BUT 🤗both our hearts melted when we looked at Porter 😍, we're not rushing into anything, but this is the first time we have spoken of the possibility of a baby🐶. Lydia the bell at the door will work if you do it every time he needs to go out. My dog is 7 years old and if we don’t notice he is standing at the back door to go out he will ring his bell after all these years, good luck.

He's so cute ! But they don't need to be bathed as much as you think you do, maybe once a month if that ! Bathing them too often can cause unnecessary skin conditions.

yes! Wearing a coat will not only keep him warm during autumn/winter, but also he won't get as dirty. Best to just rinse his feet with water if he's dirty, and otherwise just use a towel to dry off his feet after walks.

@@The.Caroline Yup ! I have a friend who has a wired haired Dacshys, she lives in the French Alps where it can get to -20 and her dog hardly ever needs coats or fleeces. If you do want to keep them warm a waterproof coat is best as fleeces can get very damp !

Hey Lydia I have a 9 week old puppy and he is fully toilet trained, you have to constantly say “ wee” then pick him up and take him to the garden until he goes then as soon as he goes say good boy and give a treat if you constantly do this all day every day he will be toilet trained in a few weeks xx
