In today's Watch Collection Talk episode, I am joined once again by the horological legend and watch industry entrepreneur Marc Frankel of Long Island Watch. We discuss the best new watch releases of the year for 2020 thus far, including a wide range of watches-from the affordable level (starting around $50) to super high end luxury at $50,000 and beyond.
We share what we love about each watch and what we don't, how the industry is changing, trends we see happening, our thoughts on each timepiece from both a design and engineering perspective, and our mutual watch obsession. So grab your favourite drink, get comfortable, and enjoy this fun and laidback special extended show.
Spoilers ahead! In this video we cover the following watches:
Seiko Presage Arita SRPE55, Grand Seiko GMT SBDJ237, Fortis Flieger Chronograph F-43, Dan Henry 1937 and 1939 (Chocolate Dial), SQUALE 1521 T183 Carbon 60 Atmos, Audemars Piguet Remaster 01, Breguet Classique 7137, Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue, Omega Seamaster Nekton 210.32.42.20.01.002, Casio G-Shock GBX100 and GMS5600, Marathon GSAR Midsize 36mm (White Dial), Islander ISL-18, Formex Essence Leggera Chronometer (Forged Carbon Dial) 0330-4-6399-8114, Yema Superman Bronze GMT, Sinn U50, Seiko 5 Sports SRPE55K1, Casio Duro MDV-106B-2AVCF, Zentih El-Primero Revival A386 Chronomaster, and Longines Tuxedo Heritage Chronograph L2.830.4.93.0.

Note: When I took my seriously-vintage Seiko 6139 Chrono out to Seiko in NJ for service early this year (yes, barely pre-COVID), the front of the building had the Grand Seiko signage prominently displayed out front. Not saying they're all set to handle that $7k GMT, but I think that indicates their seriousness about promoting GS stateside. (Sadly, I can only stretch as far as maybe upper-end Presage, but I can deal.) Glad to see you and Marc together again - my two favorite people in the watch world.

This site has such great content and these vids with Marc are excellent. I've watched so many videos about watches, getting closer and closer to the rabbit hole on so many models, some of them quite pricey (and trying not to be "influenced"), but this video drew me to the "bezel-less" Seiko 5 which I bought and like so much that it could even be my grail watch at less than US$200!

I pre-ordered the Casio G-Shock GMS5600-1 and love it. It's more my size than my DW5600 and with the metal case and thinner profile, I could wear it to the office without it looking like a workout watch. The only negative: the reverse display can be difficult to read in low light. However, the backlight remedies that problem.

So happy to see that Dan Henry made the list. I bought the 1964 with the black dial and white subdials "Evil Panda" version this past year. Absolutely love the vintage look. I believe that Dan Henry was spot on in capturing that look and feel. I own about a half dozen late 50's and early 60's vintage pieces: Omega, Croton, Gruen, Lord Elgin, Bulova and a Longines/Wittnauer. Other than the fact that the Dan Henry is shiny and new, it fits right along side.

Enjoyed the video guys. My pick for this year was the Seiko SARX069 LE. It is an homage to The Crown Chronograph of 1964 that was a single pusher stop watch. For this homage they replaced the pusher with a date but kept the dial very true to form and upgraded the bi-directional bezel to steel from plastic while maintaining the exact same appearance. I have one on my wrist as I write this and the dial has very much a Grand Seiko vibe.

I really like the expertise you both showcase in these videos, and you both are such enthusiast of horology that it really shows clear as daylight. I like that you are two very different persons, with different tastes but you present unconditional admiration for each others picks. You have to be a legit watch nerd to understand that you don't really have to look for ways where you can separate yourself from others who love this same thing we might call horology, but that we all are able to find and share joy and make conversation and learn from each other. On the totally subjective negative side, I always feel like Marc isn't really comfortable. He doesn't seem like he wants to be there, he really isn't very charismatic, or maybe that just comes from the fact that TGV oozes charisma and joy, and you can just tell that every moment spent on screen is a moment he loves being in. There's quite a bit of contrast. And having said that, there's still a good dynamic forming between the two, and if Marc can get a bit more relaxed and comfortable, it will be even better, and it is already pretty good. So all in all, I like watching these, keep them coming, and maybe next time have Marc drink something before the recording :D

I have some expensive watches but almost never wear them. I work outside and my current daily watch is a G-Shock GW2310 Atomic Solar. I love it for usefulness but the band sucks. Do you have any tricks to keep the rubber end of the band holder from sliding off 5 times a day? I've been thinking about putting hot glue spots or tying some parachute cord to make a stop. It's got a locking clasp, but the loose end of the band always pops out (usually when I'm sleeping.) This has been a problem for many G-Shock watches I've worn over the years. I don't care if it looks good, it just has to be rubber or other non-absorbent material. I can't be the only guy with this problem. I wear a watch 24/7. I swim, shower and occasionally do some snorkeling. I don't dive much deeper than about 3 meters. I have a Rolex, Tag and some Patek gold thing I've never worn that was passed down; it just doesn't look right on my wrist, (I'll pass it down one day.) I just want my watch to be accurate, solar powered and easy to read.

I have the teal GBX-100 and its great. Nice bridge between a smart watch and a normal watch. Notifications are hard to get to but I don't read them through the watch. It's nice to have when my phone is on silent and when I still want to know if I'm getting phone calls or messages.

Hope you guys do more collaborations - this was such fun! That Yema GMT looks absolutely pure class in every way - reminds me of a Tudor BB Bronze but different enough to not be a straight homage! Going to be very hard to stop myself from picking it up - would love to see your review on it as well! My favourite watch of this year was the Fortis Pilot Classic you reviewed earlier. The dimensions, along with the dial layout and clarity - with the pop of blue and flieger aesthetic. It seems like it would be extremely versatile! Gorgeous piece.

I think my favorite of 2020 so far has been the yellow dial Oyster Perpetual. I love yellow and as much as I love the dive watch look, that yellow really gets me going.

Good video as usual. I’m still waiting for TGV to discover and review a Grand Casio (Oceanus). I own both S100 and T2600, and haven’t seen better value, style or tech in their lineup. The S100 alone will certainly be remembered as a classic. One must hold one to appreciate. No picture can do it justice.
