Our First Big Trip in Our New Truck

Fall is the perfect time for desert exploring and that's exactly where we found ourselves. We went to epic campsites, and visited some hidden gems we had never been to before.
Right after finishing the High Sierra Trail we added a fur baby to our family in the form of a kitten that we named Boo. We also made the switch from Sony to Fujifilm, and switched up our film and drone setups. On top of all that, we had recently finished our truck Jolene. We were so eager to put all of our new gear (and our new cat) to the test. Join us as we recount the experiences of our fall in this video. We hope you enjoy.

Film cameras .... three years ago, I put up my Pentax 645 and got a 645-D because to buy film and develop it was a pain. I also have a Hasselblad 503 and some Nikon 3s, I guess they will sit on the shelf, I still love medium format, that's why I went will the Pentax 645-D for more manual control, plus I can still use all the lens and I have a passion for Black and white, Love your style of shots and your love of cats, mine is almost 15 and she is still a hand full.

I really liked this video. I appreciate the down to earth nature of it. I like that you just talk into a handheld microphone because it sounds great. Who are we fooling anyway, you are a person in a remote location. There is no boom operator there. and a lot of the lavaliere mics sound worse. I have made videos for more than 20 years, this is good. I started in photography with 35mm, 6x6 cm, 4x5 in, 8x10 in, transparencies, I applaud your efforts!

I love hearing folks wax poetic over film photography. Growing up in the 70’s-80’s that is all we knew. I was lucky to have a father with a pharmacy who had an inexpensive link to developing film so it was a passion they I could indulge in. Bracketing exposures, setting up the shot. So much more thought went into achieving a decent photo that you might have to wait weeks to confirm you got it right. I look back through those photos more than I do any of the electronic formats I have taken since.

Put an Apple air tag on Boo. Adventuresome young cats have a tendency to get stuck in trees and things, and if they are afraid (maybe she smells coyote) they won't meow. The airtag will take you right to her. And if she's hiding in the camper, you'll be able to quickly know. And if she somehow gets left behind at a gas station? You're going to know that too. I like the insulated pop up. I think they're the smartest RV. Otherwise you have this big thing burning excess gas enclosing space you can't use while you're driving. Good eye. As an old professional photographer with years of experience with film. Digital is actually more 'life like,' and of course has a much wider range of colors, exposure densities, etc... but all the films you'll hear about have a quality that is: not limited, distinct (but maybe not exclusive). What I'd recommend is to learn from the film and modify your digital images so you can create different qualities. The way I would do it is to flat out try to 'match' a film/print, but go way into it. Spend hours. In the end, you may get close to the film, but you'll also come up with a range of methods and ideas that will expand your skill set. (I could show you a dozen images and tell you who and what image I was trying to 'copy,' and in only one image will you say, "oh yeah,' but only because it contains a dancer and a window, and another shot from that day is much better.) Take Kodachrome. Working with a fashion photographer who always shot Kodachrome but had to shoot Ektachrome for the job, we quickly figured out to use a 5CC red filter with the Ektachrome. Close, but Kodachrome. We might've underexposed and pushed the Ektachrome... it would've been closer but worse (especially for skin tones.) In the red sandstone? Like Monument Valley carry a white card, or piece of fabric. Look at it occasionally. It'll start to look greenish. This means that the red sandstone is not the brown you see, but the red you see in photos. Rangefinders are the fastest focusing handheld cameras before the better DSLRs. Old SLRs... shot them for years. Are not as good. Slow to focus, the mirror slapping up and down... This is why Henri Cartier Bresson could talk about the Decisive Moment. Easy and fast to focus, no shutter lag with a leaf shutter. I think the Nikon X and the D2X finally matched the leaf shutters. I found this out shooting an event of high school students. I was catching all their expressions. Somehow I'd become incredible. Expressions can be a tenth of a second. You can't catch this with an SLR. Can you stand on the top of your camper? Ansel Adams always had a platform on the top of his car. Someone pointed out to me that all of his photos were shot within 150 feet of that car.... Not entirely true, but good to know. (I've hiked and climbed to get just that angle... and yeah, no. A complete waste of time. There was something else in the way.) In 18 years and about two months you can see that same eclipse a couple hundred miles north of where you saw it. It's true for all eclipses. Here's another odd tip. If you go up in altitude (for me it was 7000 feet) and there's snow, rain, humidity? Put your lap top and cameras in some kind of a case or pouch before you drive down. I was at King's Canyon in the winter, -10F, very cold and dry, but I got some snow on the floor of my vehicle. When I drove down, the snow was already starting to melt from my car heater, the pressure in my MacBook equalized by sucking in the most air. This moisture then condensed on the screen, and probably inside the case. Mold grew leaving spots. Apple replaced the screen and I was lucky enough that the Genius Bar guy who helped me was a mountain climber, he knew about this happening. And seal up your cameras against dust when you're not using them. Dust is insidious. The rice trick? It can help if you put your lap top in a bag that has some uncooked rice. The rice will absorb the humidity. This way as your device equalizes it will be sucking in dry air. But it's no cure after the fact.
