When corn tortillas accompany your meals, what you usually do is you roll them into tight little tacos (with nothing or salt in them) and you use these tight tacos to push food onto your fork (the way you might use your knife) and you bite the top off after each time you push food onto your fork (or you can dip it into the sauces left over from the food and eat them that way, also as tight tacos). There are some folks who don't like to make tacos out of the whole tortilla (because it can be long), so you can rip it in half or into quarters and make a bite-sized tight taco out of each piece, that you just pop into your mouth once it's soggy from pushing your food onto your fork (or whenever you want). If avocado is served with your meal, you customarily place a few avocado slices on a tortilla (you can smush them with a fork if you want a softer consistency), sprinkle salt on them, wrap it into a taco and eat it. Happy to hear you're enjoying Mexico!

So funny, my son and I passed up all those spendy places in centro historico too and instead ate upstairs at the mercado. Great meals for a fraction of the cost. We also would shop in the mercado and pick up a dozen or more tamales to take home and freeze for quick dinners. That's a good Mexico trick...if you find good meat tamales somewhere.

Mazatlan was our first big stop on our way down from the Arizona crossing in Lukeville (smallest town we could cross in which was a good decision). But we spent a few weeks in Puerto Penasco and down in San Carlos first. Ended up staying in Maz for over 3 months! I don't think I would like the summers there though. Also, prices have gotten a lot higher for rentals there.

I settled here in Mazatlán, but still enjoy visiting other cities. I tell people that Mazatlán is a city with a little tourist area, and Puerto Vallarta is a tourist area with a little city. Acapulco on the other hand ... is like Puerto Vallarta all grown up. If you're going down the coast, be sure to stop in Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa, Acapulco, Puerto Escondido, and Huatulco. Maybe add Manzanillo to the list if you have time. If you're bouncing inland then stop in Tlacapaque, and Tonalá (near Guadalajara) and the pyramids at Teotihuacan (near CDMX). Tonalá has a HUGE tianguis twice a week - don't get lost! On your way back North do the Barrancas del Cobre (copper canyon) route - you're driving otherwise I'd say take the train, 'El Chepe'. But stop in Divisadero and take in the canyons and the adventure park there.

He settled on the coast of Sinaloa in 1829 where there were fishing villages and established a business financing pearl divers.

Mazatlan is pretty dangerous right now. Hate to say it and ruin the fun, but it is. Specially the roads leading to it or away from it. Be careful. That route you're planning... goint into Central America and driving, is not the smartest move right now. It goes through some dangerous areas like Sinaloa, Guerrero and Michoacan at best. That's a "no, no" right now in Oct-Nov 2024.
