Hey everybody! Ryan here. I am beyond proud to present our new limited series, “Making Watcher.” It’s an honest look at 3 dummies making their own company, and to be completely transparent, there was some stuff in here that I was hesitant to share, cause it’s kind of vulnerable. This series was definitely a passion project for me, I put a lot into this one, and I hope you enjoy it. This series will be infrequently released (as this is an actual journal of our progress as a company). Also, in the spirit of transparency, the reason the rest of this series will be released exclusively on Patreon is due to the trials of starting an actual sustainable business, and that will become apparent when you watch! Anyways, enough gabbing from me, please enjoy the first episode of Making Watcher.

I’m an entrepreneurship major (yeah it’s a real thing lol) and so I’m especially interested in all of Stephen’s work to get investors and create a business model for your company. Is there any way Stephen could share the podcasts and other resources he used to teach himself about the business side of your start up company? I know you guys are super busy, but whenever you get a chance it would be super valuable to me and I think a lot of other aspiring entrepreneurs 💖💖 @watcher @stephen

Mad respect to Steven Lim for taking on the business side like a mad lad
@recoil534 жыл бұрын
There's some history to say he would have been the one to do it. Look at all the people he leapfrogged to get to Executive Director at BF - their highest title. A lot of work to do that. He also used to be a chemical engineer, unlike all the theater majors at BF. The flexibility to switch and the brain to take on mind numbing details. As an aside - as the business/money guy he's also set up to be the most powerful guy in the company.
@FH-rp6zs4 жыл бұрын
@@recoil53 Good point. I just realized when the Try Guys went off on their own, it was ex-chemical engineer Ned "I love spreadsheets" Fulmer who took over the financial side, and now he seems to be the one who ultimately controls the budget. They have a behind-the-scenes video where Eugene has to justify renting a crane to him, and calls Ned "Dad" as he explains why he needs the money.

I think this channel needs more promotion. I didn't even hear about it until the day Puppet History dropped and that's only because the first video popped up in my recommended. Steven has a HUGE audience with worth it, I'm sure that if that audience was notified, you'd get more traffic. Ryan and Shane also have a pretty big audience with unsolved, and the thing about unsolved is that a lot of them are in it for Ryan and Shane. Letting that audience know that Watcher exists can also help subscriber count grow. There's also all the people who watched Ruining History with Shane, and would enjoy Puppet History. All the channel really needs is to notify those audiences that they've moved from Buzzfeed to Watcher so Steven, Ryan and Shane fans subscribe, and to tell Ruining History fans that if they want more of that content, Buzzfeed isn't going to provide it for them, but they can move to Watcher and have basically the same thing, but with puppets.

I can’t believe I only found this channel now. I’m surprised with how slow it is, given that the three founders are arguably the most “loved” on buzzfeed right now and videos are most “sought after” to watch. You each have A LOT of people who love your work and appreciate the people behind the curtains (aka you, since it is originally all your ideas... according to this video, this is in reference to producing the best content: Worth It and Unsolved). Subtle marketing tips on the media would be casually slipping in some references of this series on your more well-known work. (Like when you guys are in the car, a small KZbin sticker on the window can be shot that has your logo and the channel’s name.) Then on the instagrams, utilize the trending tags so that your brand will pop up right away under search engines... etc. There are TONS of marketing ways to go about it. Though it may seem like an impossible feat. getting your entire audience to move here too... all you need is one person because that “one” branch can lead you down to the root of the tree, that’ll eventually sprout out new branches. Good luck to you guys and the team. You all seem like good people and I’m glad you guys are finally making your own brand. I’ve been hoping that you would all come together (I was only assuming Andrew would be here too but I just KNEW that if you guys got together, regardless of how scary the start was- you’d all succeed). The race never ends and I hope you guys pull through and keep on running 🏃🏻♀️

I'd imagine that most of the Unsolved and Worth It audience that follows the hosts on social media knows, because all of the boys have obviously been talking about Watcher a lot. The problem is that the casual viewers who don't really follow Ryan, Steven and Shane as individuals are a bit harder to reach because obviously the boys can't just plug their own rival company in a Buzzfeed video. The audience has to do a bit of their own searching to find here. We can help by telling people in the comment section of Unsolved etc though!

Of all the Watcher shows, this is the most Unsolved-like. The narration, the natural emotions, the unscripted banter… is awesome. The only thing I watched on Buzzfeed is Unsolved. With that said, I only saw Steven Lim on JK Party so this is a good way to introduce him as the equally-important person in your triumvirate. I mean I would watch an episode on how you constructed the first pitching deck with The Ghoul Boys unsure as heck and with Steven scouring the net for great sources.

“The company has a rock-solid business model, sustainable, we’ve hired amazing people, and we’ve invested in those people.” If me, my block mates, and professors were all watching this from the same room right now, I’d probably see a lot of nodding heads and smiling faces from them- despite them not knowing who you guys are. These days, no matter how fun, entertaining, aesthetically pleasing to look at, interesting, etc. the product is (regardless of the nature of business), it won’t last long if it’s not sustainable. I’m not familiar with how other KZbinrs(?) or film makers approach their work, but it’s very refreshing to hear from people in the film industry- especially from people like you who literally just started your own business, that they consider sustainability as something that can help them be successful. It’s evident that you guys really are doing your best to make this a wonderful company for everyone, and for that I commend all of you. I also want to add that I’m not a pro in terms of business models, but as someone who majored in human development in the workplace, I want to emphasize that no matter what happens, your team members must always come first. Don’t ever sacrifice your people in exchange for amazing content or stuff like that. If you believe in your team and help each other develop as professionals, and as individuals- y’all will do just fine. :) Hats off to the whole team and I can’t wait to see more from all of you. I also want to specifically commend Steven for doing a job very well done in terms of the business side of the company. I was originally here for the ghoul boys and it’s literally my first time hearing from Steven BUT I’M ALREADY A BIG FAN. You. Are. Amazing. But so is Shane and Ryan, we all know that. Hahaha. CHEERS TO THE FUTURE! PS. If anyone from the team is reading this, I recommend you look up the BLUE OCEAN strategy. Maybe it can help you think of new ways on how to approach things within your company. :)

I left my full time toxic job of 9 years and started my own small business. I woke up one day after a horrific and tragic loss in my life and just couldn't get out of bed. All I did was cry. It lasted for months. This was two years ago and I haven't moved past it. Anyway, I want to say it was the worst decision I ever made, but it wasn't. I am my own boss. I do what I want when I want. No one harasses me and talks bad about me behind my back. No one tells me I can't have lunch because other people are on lunch and no one tells me I can't go home because other people are taking breaks. No one tells me I have to come in on my day off because tasks aren't done. I make triple and sometimes quadruple what I did at a place that gave me nothing but anxiety and torment. It was so scary and sometimes is, but never doubt yourself. I felt like I was Michael Scott starting my own paper company but I did it. I made it. And is it what I want to do forever? Absolutely not. But it's better than where I was. Never, ever, ever doubt yourself.
