Nice job on the panel! It looks like you fit in with the last few dogs. As an open water sailor of old, I hope I am not insulting you and Dame but the galley even on a calm day would be a disaster. I see no fiddles or restrains of any kind and the open storage will not work at sea. I am figuring that you are putting it off until later but it has to be done. Even inside cabinet doors, it is a good idea to have a ridge on each shelf edge to prevent sliding when the door is opened. The stove top too needs a fiddle too. I have sailed in both trawlers and sailboats and all of the countertops can be edged also to prevent sliding off even in mild seas. Some of the angles that I have seen in a galley are shocking when you consider that its use is for standing upright. We even used chef straps that snap onto the bulkheads to keep the cook in one place.

Hi Guys...... Luv this Channel, called into ther Yard there in Bundaberg on the way back from Mackay after an extensive refit on my 60ft Motor Launch... But no one home..... Here is an area of Concern, or maybe over Cautious, and im sure Damien has it covered, but the Loading on the Welds on the New front Bow section would be massive, and if there were an incident of Striking/Hitting somthing as to weather or not those welds would actually hold, as the sheet is not formed and only pushed into shape... Maybe some heat and Annealing just to take the Stress out of it... Anyway, My thoughts only... From one Kiwi to Another.........

Question: will you be welding some sort of protective steel wedge in front of the anode to keep that from getting torn off by ice?
@jossmaxwell00
@jossmaxwell00 2 жыл бұрын
I actually watch a video on an other channel on this and how they got around protecting the anode. I cant find the video now, but basically it was a steel wedge but shaped like sloping sides, top bottom and front, with a lid to fit and cover it all. open at the back and 3 hole drilled through the top plate. Bit of a bugger when it comes to replacing the anode though.

Just an observation... on your dogs & wedges... it seems like it might be easier to put a slot into the dogs instead of just a notch. I guess the best way to describe it would to be create the dogs in a "U" shape instead of an "L". This would trap the wedges and give you more strength in the dog weld attachment points. If this is not helpful (or someone else has already mentioned this) then my apologies... just sharing my thoughts.
@snowgorilla9789
@snowgorilla9789 2 жыл бұрын
As a shipbuilder "L" is correct for a dog however they should be installed perpendicular to the butt/seam and wedge driven in from the weld side, do not use oil or lubricant as it WILL contaminate your welds. Just buff the wedge
@djmjr77
@djmjr77 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking a T shape so you would have two leverage points and not have to cut it off to move to the next wedge position..

Dame, use distortion to your advantage now. Pull the bits together with it working towards the open end. Start at the neat end ànd work towards the gap. Tig with accelerator pedal is great for this. More heat = more pull. By angling the TIG torch you can make the pull directional as well evev in thicknessb If the far end closes first, cautiously open it up a bit by grinder so it doesn' t wrinkle it then go again. Up, down, sideways until it closes then full weld other side when level. Then cut out messy bits and seal weld over where they were. The other side might be a broblem but if you weld to the intermediate strips first then start to pull the edges in you should get it pretty close. More filler and more heat gives more pull. Make it go where you want. I have seen film of 100 ton girders pulled into line and also out by this method which is a modified step back sequence. I have pulled smaller stuff out straight this way. Good to see the dog on the mend. Cheers, James

Try making dogs that straddle the wedge instead of leaning over it from one side only. That will make them hold a lot more before they come off. The way it's happening now, it starts to pull away at the corner, and then split the rest of the weld like an overloaded zipper.

Would it be easier to do the front plates in two or more plates with the seams at the frame locations or would this make the structure weaker? You may have better function from the dogs if it was a U shaped where it would be welded on each side of the wedge.

I see all the rust inside the hull, and I recall how you said that the rust won't get any worse because there will be no oxygen in that compartment of the hull. I want you to know that when you're out on the ocean I don't care if that compartment is airtight, there will be a point where moisture will get inside that area and it will rust out again and you'll have to completely replate the front of the hull again. If I were you I would sandblast that entire area inside and coat it before welding it shut. Just ask Doug from SV seeker he had a metallurgist help him with that part of his build.
