Our offer was accepted on a Morgan 382! The boat is in fabulous condition, but still needs a bit of work. Fortunately she doesn’t need repairs, just finishing. Kirk and I do kind of like the idea of finishing out the systems ourselves. The woodworking, on the other hand, couldn’t be further above our heads. The level of craftsmanship of the interior (which the owner has spent the last ten years redoing) is way beyond our skill set.
We come to an agreement with Jack, the owner/seller: He finishes the woodworking projects before closing, and we finish the rest. With a month to go before closing, Kirk and I aren’t about to sit around twiddling our thumbs. We dive headfirst into our list of projects for the boat. Our biggest items include plumbing the freshwater system and designing a propane system.
A few weeks into our work in the yard, we learn some terrible news. As a result, this boat purchase doesn’t go according to plan.
Hope you enjoy!
Lauren & Kirk

I am sorry that boat did not work out for you and I hope Jack is ok. It was fun to watch you in my home port of Milwaukee. My Dad runs a marina in Milwaukee. We work with Horney Goat marina and even share equipment. I don't know that boat or Jack, but I think the Tarten 37 was a better boat for you! Good luck in all you sailing plans. I am enjoying watching your videos!!

I crewed on a Morgan 38 in the 2002 Pacific Cup and it was a great vessel for the race. We finished about mid-pack and mid-division, but the evening watch was not good at flying the spinnaker in the dark, so we lost a lot of time because they crashed the spinnaker every evening, so we'd sail the rest of night under white sails only until dawn and the morning watch could get the spinnaker back up. But that boat had been meticulously maintained by its owner for decades. Sounds like Jack got some free labour and you guys got some good experience on boat projects that will serve you well once you do eventually get your own boat. Live and learn.

So sorry about the boat and Jack but so fun for us to be able to join you through the process. Thx for taking us with you. What I don't understand is why not go to the east coast (esp. South Florida) and pick up a boat there. Doesn't even have to be anything extravagant (32'-34' 80's versions like Catalina or O'day etc.) and go wind your way through the Bahamas and Caribean for a year. The boat wouldn't have to be in that great of shape as you can coastal hop a lot of it. But I'm missing something here, yes?

Sad story, and early on was weirdly close to the the experience my wife and I had. We bought a Morgan 382 from an owner after the boat had been on the hard in Maine for 2 years because the owner had fallen and broken his back. This was many years ago. We shipped the boat to Southern California where we sailed around as we updated the electrical system and electronics plus made a large number of upgrades and improvements. We finally cut the dock lines and sailed south to the Sea of Corez, Mexico, all the countries of Central America, through the Panama Canal twice, messed around the Atlantic, kept sailing south in the Pacific Ocean, Galapagos Islands, South Pacific, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Tonga, FIji, New Zealand, and Australia. We had to return home but sold the boat for 2-1/2 times what we paid for it. We sailed 35K miles over 10 years and loved every second of it. The M382 is a great live aboard while still being a very fast boat, very much like the Tartan in quality and handling, but no centerboard. If you guys do this right, it's the adventure of a lifetime that you'll never forget. It's very formative and leaves you with the knowledge that you can do anything together. Fair winds and following seas. Pam & Jim

FYI for other boat buyers out there...don't work on a boat you don't own! Time estimates of boat work are notoriously inaccurate. Days stretch to weeks, weeks to months, etc.... If you can't afford to have competent woodworkers/mechanics/riggers work on your boat...either develop those skill sets, or perhaps take up hiking instead. BOAT= Break out another thousand...heh heh....

It does but there’s a lot similar which is a good thing. Why passed time? I’m looking at boats now, never owned one: I was going to spend a few years road tripping but I’m an ex interstate truck driver... and 64yo, I’ve done huge motorcycle trips around Australia and hate planes or at least flying so... boat, cruise the coat till I’m confident then venture out... Cat or mono? I don’t need room for a family and cats are so expensive.

Sorry to hear about Jack, but stranger things have happened which spoil a purchase contract. I hope the new boat is equally good shape. To be honest, I would have stuck with Jack's boat but tried to re-negotiate the deal since he won't be able to help with finishing the last few projects. You'd be surprised at how many (very skilled) retired woodworkers there out in CraigsList land who could have lender their expertise for a very fair price. It takes some skill, but it does not take a 'master' woodworker to complete those last few things Jack couldn't get to. I just think there will be less surprises in Jack's boat since its been out of the water and gone over with a fine tooth comb... Wishing you the best of luck. If I had the means I would buy Jack's boat and finish it, but I'm in San Diego, LOL.

So, the sale of the boat was contingent on Jack finishing the woodwork? Since he could not finish the work himself Jack should either arrange for the work to be done or renegotiate the contract so you can get the work done. Remember this is a business deal. If it was building the cupboards of your kitchen at home and the contractor couldn't finish the job I'm sure you wouldn't just walk away. I'd have to watch your other videos to see what "deal" was made, (if it is in there) but this dreamboat isn't beyond hope.

I’ve been binge watching your videos and really enjoy them. KZbin can make it difficult to watch in chronological order when you come back at a later time so I haven’t been in sequential order. I think the two of you deserve the following, your skills of the trade are apparent. I’m a proud Patreon in will continue to be one but We’re,(my family) are conflicted. I watched this episode a week ago and I can’t stop revisiting it. I understand your decision and as we all must make decisions in our best interest, but it seems to me that this was a decision that was made without looking for alternatives to working with the owner. Am I wrong? Videos are two dimensional and relationships are multi dimensional so I can’t sit here and act like I know the whole story so I’m trying not to be harsh. I just wonder if the universe presented you with a great opportunity to grow, and you walked away from it. I hope that’s not harsh.
@SailingSoulianis
@SailingSoulianis 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your support, and we're glad to hear you have been enjoying the videos! KZbin does make it difficult to watch episodes in chronological order which is why we put together our "Watch from the Beginning" playlist, (kzbin.info/aero/PL3Lh3SjNvyL4okLA8rcI6bH7xCHTkZq-x) if you open that up and start watching from any episode you want, it will automatically take you to the next one in line, all the way up to our most recent. You are absolutely correct -- no matter how much time and care we put into our videos, there's absolutely no way we can capture all of the depth and emotion of real life on screen. Regarding the Morgan 382... Making the decision to move on from that boat was one of the more difficult decisions either of us have made in our lives. There were a lot of discussions with Jack's family, and his broker who happened to be a close family friend of his to try and figure out the best solution to move forward. We were very lucky to have a clear and concise contract that spelled out everything we had agreed upon in detail, including what should happen if either party did not fulfill their duties. We both entered this agreement knowing strange things can happen in life, and that the contract was there to protect both of us. In the end, I believe we went our separate ways as amicably as possible, and there were no hard feelings. Life can be difficult, and it can be tragic, we are presented with thousands of opportunities a day to make a positive difference in people's lives in one way or another, but we are surrounded by pain and suffering and tragedy on a daily basis. It's up to you to choose how much of yourself to give away and when and where you think you can make the most impact. We are extremely compassionate people and it was absolutely heartbreaking to hear what happened to Jack, but we couldn't let his tragedy become ours. Our buying that boat wasn't going to fix Jack's back, it wasn't going to relieve the physical pain he felt, it wouldn't make him heal any faster. Without Jack working alongside us in his wood shop to complete the woodworking we had agreed upon in the contract, we would have been forced to delay our dream, the one we had been planning for the past 10 years, potentially for another year or more. We'd just sold our car and all our furniture, moved across the country, quit jobs and were crashing at Lauren's parents house in a spare bedroom. To finish the boat we would have had to find an apartment to rent, find new part time jobs to pay for the apartment and a car, find someone we could hire to replace Jack, and push everything down the line. All of this seemed much too extreme just to complete the sale of the boat. We were already very close to being overwhelmed with amount of work the boat needed even WITH Jack's help, and without it we no longer felt like the right people to become this boat's caretakers. We knew there would be someone out there much better suited for her than us. We're glad to report that the boat was finished, she was sold and has seen the water again. - K&L

geezzz.... at least go see the guy in the hospital, He may have cut the price enough to fund someone to complete the word. Maybe you have to do a bit more work on it. If you cut bait and ran so fast my guess is you were having second thoughts or the wait was to long. Hard not to feel sorry for the guy but Hey Jack if you still need that boat sold I might be interested. especially if you give me a bit of guidance on the wood work.... if it matters I have a messed up back screws and bolts t8 , 9 and 10, c4 and 5 L4 and L5 injuries. it sucks but there are many far worse off. that is a beautiful boat.. bigger than I want I think but hey if the price is right.

Nope not at all. Everything was discussed and agreed upon before we did anything. We did nothing but clean the boat and pull things apart (and put them all back together) to inspect them and make a plan. The only thing we actually did that was irreversible was mark the chain. At the end of it all he had a clean well organized boat with an inventory of everything that needed to be done and a list of everything onboard.

I dont know much about buying a boat, but it seems very odd that you would work on someone else's boat (for this very reason).

It's bad luck to bail on a boat. You'll need to make it right before it comes back around. The sea has a good memory.

Yes, its a cool place, I keep my sailboat there, although outside,..great place, lots of cool bars and restaurants just north of it,.. sad to hear what happened, but I would have thought some solution could have been worked out, as it is a boat you really loved,...good luck on your next one.

This boat looks like it is a great one, if you can not finish it with your skills, then refrain from looking or buying another. Who in their right mind works on a boat for a week and then backs out of the deal? If I would have been involved, you would have been sued for breach of contract and damage to the boat. You are not met for the boating world, look at a house and get back to working. Most of all stop living off your dad and mom.

Hi Web thanks for dropping by to share your opinion and letting us know to avoid a financial transaction with you in the future. Just to set the record straight we documented a detailed list of woodworking projects and a mutually agreeable date to finish them in the completed legal contract. Timing was very important for us given the short summer sailing season in the Great Lakes. This is the exit clause we used to protect our interests and legally back out of the contract. We never hoped to use that exit clause and certainly not under those circumstances, but following through with a well thought out contract is important when two parties enter a financial and legal agreement. As for your comments about damage to the boat. You'll notice we didn't really do any "work" on the boat, it was a lot of cleaning, inspection, prep work and planning. Everything that was taken off the boat was put right back where it came from. And we parted ways amicably, but full of sadness nonetheless.

Sounds like a lot of "sailing" excuses to me... Why call your channel "Sailing" anything when your not sailing, Looking or Waisting Time would be better choice Or something like We can't afford it or I don't have the balls or knowledge to go through with it "Sailing" ... In my many years of SAILING both buying and selling aswell as working on sailing yachts, I've seen a few like you guys, You walk up to the boat all big dreams etc, But now with the success of a very few KZbinrs, your all over the place like rats on a sinking ship.

LOL. Your many years of sailing obviously didn't teach you to jump to conclusions, or much of anything it seems, if that chip on your shoulder is anything to go by. If you bothered to watch the whole video, you'd realize they bought a boat in the next episode's preview. Maybe it's best you go back to playing WoT and let other people live their dreams.

I dont get it.. you did a lot of work on a boat you had yet to sign for. Then when someone else cant finish the work, you find excuses to back out? If it was sea worthy and you can finish up the fittings and tanks you could have easily sailed out and headed down the inter coastal and done the rest along the way. I sailed on the great lakes up till late September and early October, its cold but if you truly loved the water and had the heart you would have got her wet and underway.
