Why is this so unclearly cited? this is a reading of Siegried Knappe's memoir Soldat.

the flaktowers where cool looking i am from vienna austria there was a flaktower that i passed often it was interesting to me but it was fenced off with the doors sealed even as a small boy i wanted to go inside and explore it, the where almost impossible to destroy in ww2, the antiaircaft guns on top could shoot not only up but sideways and anything that came near it plane or tank was toast the russians had to avoid them so as to not to have huge losses. 'All the flaktowers surrendered when the war was over the where not taken by force. i remember huge thick ledges stiking out of the top one was cracked but it had so much steel in it it did not fall down.

@@colinmcgrathinsydney sometimes when i tell people i am from Austria more often then not the say " so you are from Australia how did you get here ? i am a Vietnam vet and for my 7 day r n r, i chose Sidney it was a few nice days away from the war. I often like these ww2 stories if the sound real like this one. As a small boy i remember trading comic books for Lugers and swastika engraved bayonets that we kids would find in abandoned hiding places i remember i was so small i had to use 2 hands to hold a luger in shooting position i wonder now how we where not hurt thinking back i never knew how to check the gun if it was loaded or not, one day a bigger kid took it away from me and threw it into the Blaue Donau . all while hiding this from my mom of course she would have beat my ass good. Cheers from America.

The Germans' routine destruction of villages in the Soviet Union, slaughter of their inhabitants (incl. rape of their women) was, of course, far more brutal. And while the Germans carried out those atrocities because they regarded themselves as the übermenschen vs the untermenschen, intent on taking over those lands for lebensraum, the Soviet troops were taking revenge for those atrocities.

The claim that the names of Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, etc. by the speaker reflects similar claims by many Germans just after the war. Historians have come to the conclusion that by 1943 a large fraction of the German people were to a reasonablevextent aware what would happen to those who were deported. The German soldiers who had fought in Russia were very well aware of routine mass murders taking place of both civilians and prisoners of war. Concerning the Netherlands, through broadcasts from London people were made well aware what was happening in Poland and the name of Auschwitz was known.

A foolish decision in hindsight. Knowing the brutality of the Red Horde a staunch defense to the east in order to allow more favorable terms of surrender with the west would've saved thousands of lives.

All of these “diary” type stories are ai voice bots. All in British accent. Most are piss poorly spoken. You’ll often hear several or even many different pronunciations of the same word. I have not heard a single one done in an American accent, or Japanese, or German. All done in British accent. Kinda like war movies for many decades now. Nazi uniformed actors speaking British English.
