Today, I want to talk about a critical issue in the construction industry: mental health. Inspired by an insightful perspective by Sharareh “Sherri” Kermanshachi and Apurva Pamidimukkala, this video delves into the alarming mental health challenges faced by construction workers.
If you, your supervisor, or a co-worker notice:
Decreased productivity
Increased conflict among co-workers
Near hits, incidents, and injuries
Decreased problem-solving ability
Increased tardiness and absenteeism
You might be depressed and need to get checked out. It’s NOT normal!
As a Marine Corps veteran and former Bechtel employee who has faced significant health challenges, I know firsthand the pressures our industry places on its workforce. The deeply embedded expectations of toughness often prevent workers from seeking the help they need, creating a 'silent pandemic.'
Even after being diagnosed with a rare condition, I struggled with the mentality of 'toughing it out.' To silence that inner critic, I coined my own phrase: 'Healing is weakness leaving the body!' Internalizing this play-on-words helped my 'Inner Drill Instructor' accept a different way to live.
We need comprehensive mental health programs, supportive workplace cultures, and flexible work arrangements to support everyone, especially those transitioning from military service. The National Academy of Sciences' perspective emphasizes the need for prioritizing mental health initiatives and fostering inclusive workplaces.
I appreciate that Bechtel is on the front lines of this fight. I’m eager to work together to ensure every worker has the support they need to thrive both physically and mentally. Just as soon as I’ve finished my own recovery! I need to prepare just a bit longer for the ‘next moment’!
