No way, not offended at all Brother Bro. Thank you for talking about something people rarely do because they feel guilty feeling bad for animals when so many humans have it so shitty. You were spot on.

Re: The Zone of Interest discussion. It was bold of you to say it, but yes, very much agree, especially regarding the pet comment. To be ok with eating meat requires one to have a very particular set of morals to differentiate between human life and animal life (which, for some, can be on a specturm when considering animals with more complex brains: monkeys, dolphins etc.) To own a pet and be disgusted at the thought of anything happening to said pet (meanwhile also being a meat eater and turning a blind eye to the meat industry) is problematic to say the least - certainly, it is not a morally or intellectually consistent stance to take.

The last part of your comment is wildly unrealistic. Thats like saying caring for your own baby but not actively helping all the countries in a world where children die of hunger every hour is problematic. It is sad for sure but villianizing people for it is strange.
@michaelangelo2192
@michaelangelo2192 9 ай бұрын
@@samnovak3024 No, your analogy doesnt work. By eating meat, you are actively contributing to animal's being killed and mistreated. By caring for your own baby, you are not actively participating in the murder of other children! Like I said, if one is ok with the murder of animals, that is a legitimate stance to take (and I referenced a spectrum in my comment because to many, killing an ant is very different to killing a pig, and killing a pig is very different to killing a monkey). Owning a pet, in virtually every case, shows one cares about the treatment of animals. Therefore, pointing out the hypocrisy between caring for the life of a dog, meanwhile being ok with the torture and slaughter of a cow, for example, is a legitimate argument to make.

I agree with most of your choices, but the movie that still lingers in my mind from 2023 is the Irish film, “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-which I first saw a year ago, and then went to see three more times at local cinemas because of the powerful emotional effect it had upon me. I retired a few years ago after spending forty years working with troubled children and their families, so this deceptively simple story of a nine-year-old girl from a poor and neglectful home being sent off to spend the summer with her mother’s cousin, a childless, middle-aged woman and her husband who run a dairy farm in the Irish countryside, really hit close to home with me, bringing back many bittersweet memories of the children and parents I used to work with, among them a pair of foster parents who operated a dairy farm, just like the Kinsellas do in the movie. The film was directed by Colm Bairéad, who also wrote the screenplay adapted from the short story, “Foster”, by Claire Keegan, who also wrote, “Small Things Like These”, upon which Cillian Murphy’s new film is based. For some reason, “The Quiet Girl” continues to affect me in a way that no film has in a long, long time.

@@hm2011100 Thank you for your comment. I'm always happy to help connect someone to "The Quiet Girl" film, or the Claire Keegan short story, "Foster", from which it was adapted. I left you a longer comment the other day with my own advice on how to watch "The Quiet Girl", but for some reason it was deleted or disappeared somehow. Anyway, you should be able to find the film on streaming services somewhere. I'm sure you'll find it a rewarding experience.

Anatomy of a Fall, she is clearly and deliberately shown to be not guilty from the outset. There is a (very) wide shot of when the boy and the dog discover the body, in that shot she is shown to be genuinely alarmed. She is on her own, with no audience, she is not pretending for anyone. This seems like a very deliberate choice on the part of the director, there is no need at all to include this shot, she could just as easily appear at the scene of the death, then throughout the rest of the film her behaviour and attitudes would be very ambiguous. For me the only reason for this shot is to demonstrate her innocence.

I don't think of you guys as "film critics", per se, but I think you both give really thoughtful and astute analyses of movies and I always love hearing your take. I also really appreciate your thoughts on Zone of Interest, too. Only a lazy interpretation would say you're comparing animals to people. Zone of Interest, like the best of movies, makes us reflect on our own lives and behaviors in valuable ways.

Thankful for that entire talk about zone of interest. I have seen that film twice and yes even though it has gotten critical acclaim I wish the conversations and all these ideas, emotions and intellectual theories about violence, guilt, distraction, distance of the personal and private and the public etc would have more influence on the public. They are so so important and I wish this film would have breeched mainstream discussion way more than Barbie or Oppenheimer but sadly that won’t happen probably exactly because if it’s themes.

I was also aware of the dogs barking in the camp, they seemed so distressed. When you said you'd likely be riveted if Oppenheimer were about the making of the jelly bean, I thought about what if Christopher Nolan had directed the Pop Tarts movie. In the lead up to the release of Barbie, I found myself defending the film's potential profundity due to Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach being behind it. Unfortunately, I didn't wind up feeling it was nearly as profound as I expected it to be. I thought the film's tone would drastically shift from what we saw in the trailer once Barbie left Barbieland, but that didn't happen. Vegan chicken nuggets exist, and they are yummy.

I liked your analysis on Zone. However, I see it as more about capitalism and classicism. Something that affects US ALL no matter race, gender, dietary consumption, etc. Where just because we have the things we need, that doesn't mean other people have the necessary requirements that they need and are literally dying because of it. We're turning a blind eye instead of trying to do something about it and help out.

I saw a couple of great foreign language 2023 films in the past few weeks: Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World and The Delinquents. It was also fun speculating last year that Bertrand Bonello’s The Beast would break out. I think it still has yet to show outside of festivals in the US and much of Europe. It’s a unique film which I think is great. Evil Does Not Exist opens next week where I am and I’m very curious what I’ll make of it’s supposed unconventionality.

Haha, as a vegan I was NOT offended. I hope others took a message about the quiet evils of consumerism. Thanks for the great recommendations. What most jumped out at me were Rye Lane, Perfect Days and About Dry Grasses. I was happy to see some May December love in here. That’s one of the biggest snubs at the Oscars this year. Granted it got screenplay, I think supporting actor and picture were shoe-ins.
