As a swiss, that takes the train every day it's not that people don't travel on weekends it is that no one takes the 1st class because it is too expensive for what it is😅 we used to travel on weekends but during specific hours and you will find more people in 2nd class that first one. For example, just the train between GENEVA and Be (which I made today) is in 1st class 205chf and 2nd class is 121.20chf so nearly double for nothing. That's why you were alone in the couches
@DarkArtGuitars

Yep, most people travelling first class get it payed by their work, so there is a lot fewer of them on the weekend.

Actually most people doesn’t use 1st class in Switzerland because it’s too expensive. It’s usually pretty empty. It can sometimes be paid by someone’s firm, so it’s most used for work, so on week days. The vineyard region you saw in the train is Lavaux and is my home region, and I feel lucky to use this train line every day.

It was the first thing I noticed about Kara’s outfit. Reminds me of the rather inappropriate footwear they wore when they went to the Monte Rosa Hütte and had to cross the glacier. I don‘t want to sound judgmental but the Alpes are not a joke. So many avoidable accidents happen due to footwear which is not appropriate for the Alpine terrain (e.g. Birkenstocks on glaciers). I wish they‘d take greater care in their choice as they also set an example for others due to their videos being watched by thousands. On a different note: thank you for spending your „extra“ day in my home country😊

I can't go through the almost 1500 comments already on here so I might repeat things. As someone else said, 1st Class is usually quite empty because it is too expensive for us. The many vineyards you saw is a UNESCO protected site called Lavaux :) This stretch of railway is, I think, the most beautiful in the country. Also, I think (but not sure) that Lake Geneva is the biggest lake in Europe. I feel all kinds of emotions seeing you both not only in my country but in my backyard! That sign MORGES you filmed at the beginning? I live 5-minute walk from that train station!

Sorry for replying to such an old comment :D Lake Geneva is not the largest lake in Europe - it's not even close. There aee loads of bigger lakes in the European part of Russia, and also a few in Western Europe {IJselmeer in the Netherlands, for example). Lake Geneva is *only* the largest lake in Switzerland and France, and in the Alps. Source: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_lakes_of_Europe

About the train cars being almost empty, that's because you were traveling in first class. The majority of swiss people travel in second class just cause it's a lot cheaper and usually you still have enough space there except if you travel at rush hour. First class generally doesn't have a lot of people aside from tourists and some business people. Also the swiss guy who was taking your photo wasn't laughing at you, he said "It's just in the shadow" probably meaning to say the picture was coming out dark cuz of the shadow,

Thank you so much. I got quite emotional watching this. My wonderful (widowed) mother booked a special holiday for the two of us the summer of 1976 as a reward after I sat my first school exams. I was 16. We weren’t that well off, but she worked for British Rail (the railways were publicly owned in the 1970s) and had free train travel in most European countries. She had booked us a hotel in Montreaux overlooking Lake Geneva, which was reasonably priced relatively (even then Switzerland was expensive) and very old fashioned in a charming way. It even had a resident elderly American lady, who dressed up each evening for dinner, like she was reliving the 1930s. It had been the hotel she and her husband had visited each year, and when he died she simply decided it was her favourite place and moved in permanently. The hotel proprietors treated her as family. My mother and I had a day trip to the peak you visited in your vlog. There wasn’t a gondola in those days, just the train all the way up. My abiding memory is that my Mam’s shoes that day were just about as impractical as Kara’s. She had heels on, so it was really funny watching her walk through the snow at the top with her heels sinking into the snow. Blessed memories.

Most of the Lindt chocolate available in the US is made in the US, rather than Switzerland. In the US they tend to add ingredients not allowed in Europe, as well as artificial flavors, so it’s no surprise that the Swiss version tastes better. 😋 🍫
@ilovesuisse1
@ilovesuisse1 2 жыл бұрын
If it’s made in the US then it’s not Swiss. The milk in Switzerland tastes different to US milk. The chocolate shouldn’t have artificial flavors or ingredients. I’m not surprised the chocolate tastes better in Switzerland.
@kennethfharkin
@kennethfharkin 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what "Swiss" chocolate you buy in the US vs from CH. Laderach you cannot go wrong with if bought in the USA. It all comes from CH.
@arkadventure2
@arkadventure2 2 жыл бұрын
@@kennethfharkin Wrong! Labeled as “Swiss” chocolate, but read the label on the back. Often states “Made in the US”.
@kennethfharkin
@kennethfharkin 2 жыл бұрын
@@arkadventure2 You need to read what I wrote. Laderach is ALL made in CH and shipped overseas to its points of sale. I have worked with a Swiss company and regularly travelled there for 23 years from America. I know my Swiss chocolate. The milk does play a very large factor with differences being noted by some between milk from cows in their summer mountain pastures and milk from cows in their winter fields and barns. There is also a difference in the manner in which the milk within the chocolate is preserved in the production process which historically has caused a noted taste difference between Hershey's American made chocolate and European chocolates. Swiss processes can be implemented in the USA for production, as is done with Lindt, but you cannot duplicate the milk source. Remember, everything other than the milk for chocolate is imported into CH, just as it can be imported to everywhere else. It then comes down to processes techniques, quality controls, and simply local taste preferences. I significantly prefer a Lindt bar of milk chocolate made in America to a Hersey bar made in America but I know others who feel different simply based on the tastes they are accustomed to. I also prefer a Lindt bar in CH to one in the USA and do note a difference between them. That doesn't mean I do not like the USA Lindt, it is good chocolate. Laderach is a major step up in process controls for chocolate production. It also costs a very pretty penny. Go to a Swiss supermarket (COOP or Migros) and you will see a row of chocolate bars, Lindt, Camille Block, and the "house brands" from those supermarkets. Those house brand bars are always excellent and can be bought in bulk packs reasonably. I often throw several in my suitcase to give away when I get home. They are all Swiss produced, often in the same Camille Block or Lindt facilities but under different labels for the stores.

You should check it fast because the ice in the massive stone structures are smelting which means that water and warmth can go into the stones and reach the permafrost which is NOT good. Kara, Nate, its not that no one takes trains in the weekends, its that almost no one travels in first class! First class in swiss trains usually just fills up in those trains that start after the Seven25 (from 7pm to 5am, trains are at a super high discount) and people end up sitting on the floor of second class so they let you sit in first class for free 😊

You should check it fast because the ice in the massive stone structures are smelting which means that water and warmth can go into the stones and reach the permafrost which is NOT good. (A series of thousands of avalanches and stone chips will start and the whole mountain will literally move/shrinkage exactly whats happening rn on Matterhorn and Kandersteg.)

My favorite video of yours ever!!🥰 The Swiss trains are the best in the world. I stayed in Wengen in 1989 for 2 weeks and took the train to the Jungfrau. The ice sculptures were amazing and dog sleds. I can’t go above 5000 ft now because of my heart so I’m so glad I did it then. I went back to Lucerne 4 years ago but could barely afford to eat because the food is so expensive…

as someone who grew up on the shores of lake geneva it's crazy to see you guys in my old haunts! i would strongly encourage you two to spend more time in the geneva area (not that i'm biased or anything) - the views are just fantastic as is the lake and even the surrounding bits of france are lovely (would highly recommend going up the Salève at sunset if you guys are ever back in that area, the most incredible sunsets in my life have been from the top of that mountain). you both commented on the vineyards and the reason why you didn't know there was any vineyards is because they're a closely guarded swiss secret - switzerland exports almost 0% of its wine, we just keep it all to ourselves to drink because it's so good! also a special treat for kara - there's a place in geneva where you can eat fondue out on a pier in the lake in winter (rumour has it they make it with champagne) and i've lived in that area all my life (ie. had many fondues) but it's still the best fondue i've ever had

I remember being on vacation in Interlaken with my family a few years ago, I've never been in a more beautiful place. It really does feel like you're in a fairytale land. Thanks for showing these beautiful places to travel to, feel like this would be the one place I would to visit to see that view for myself!

Fun fact: the Bond villain hideout that was shown in the short snippet from the movie "On her majesty's secret service", is actually only a few kilometers away, just on the other side of the Lauterbrunnen valley. Go to Mürren and the up to the Schilthorn, where the famous turntable restaurant visible in the movie is located. It's open to public as a regular alpine sightseeing destination.

What an incredible " last minute"trip. Thanks to both of you for letting me ride along on your many many adventures to places I would never ever get to. The top of the world here did remind me of the adventure of standing on the top of NZ Mt Cook when we went up in a helicopter ride. Amazing feeling. Since typing this I have been thinking of other high lights of adventure and bucket list type items. Over the last few years I had kind of forgotten! Thanks for the fun. That ladder climb was truly insane!!!! Living in Australasian with safety rules for everything to the max that was mind boggling!!!

I can’t say it enough but thank you Kate and Nate for showing me a lot of the world which I myself know I will not get to see. My spouse is retired army and they’ve gone to Germany, Korea, and other places. But I’ve always stayed state side. Hopefully my spouse can take me over seas to Europe where I’ve always wanted to see. When we first got married I’ve always been scared to fly and be away from my parents. But now we have twins and they promised me we would visit over seas soon. We’ll see. But you two are showing me a lot of places I wish to see. Thank you. And always safe travels.

Grindelwald is one of my favourite places in the world. It was the first place I ever saw snow (I live in Western Australia) and, despite my brother locking me out on the balcony whilst it was snowing, will always remain a favourite. Every time I smell chocolate croissants I think of Grindelwald, even 32 years later.

Videos like these make me appreciate the country I live in so much more! Thanks for brightening up my day! PS: There is a good chance that the chocolate does actually taste better IN Switzerland. This is because most of it is produced in local factories with some local ingredients. Most importantly good swiss milk is used. (it is proven that swiss milk tastes better because most cows graze in the wild instead of being locked inside and fed feed. 😄Which gives the milk a better taste!) The more you know!
