Lecter knew Will was about to have a new insight at any moment, and that Will once the idea would present itself would know its correct. @@leejay1101 No. His surprise when he opens the cooking book and finally makes the connection is private and genuine - Lecter is out of the room at that point. There are two plausible explanations for your quote. The first is "I was a fool not to see it clearly and to allow it to happen" but frankly I find the second more apt: Will is always unsure of his own subconscious knowing and his own motivations. His body knows things before he himself does consciously. That's his curse and gift. An example of this is his doubt about whether he subconsciously set up lounds to punish him and draw out the red dragon. But in this case he be referring to how he might have subconsciously sought out Lecter before going to the bureau because something down there was pulling the threads together. Something that might even be slightly suicidally be prepared to use himself as bait. Remember - Wills greatest fear is that lecter is right: that he understands monsters so well because he IS one himself. He carries a tremendous amount of fear and guilt about that. Catching monsters is about struggling with that, as well as stopping them. Enough that an act that comes very close to a personal sacrifice might be considered an act of redemption within his personal emotional economy. It might be the thing needed to begin to answer the question or atone for what he is. Atonement is emotionally tied in with drawing out the killer while perhaps, at the same time his unconscious understands that this may the only way to draw Lecter out of hiding and maybe make a mistake. Will knows that whoever the monster is - he has one disadvantage: he is insane. So this looks to me like a kind of desperate high stakes psychological roll of the dice under the surface. But Will is not consciously aware yet. He is in the process of finding out and he came to scratch that itch.

@jadefire28173 жыл бұрын
It is usually the sole definition, but they use it here to explain that Will is empathic to the degree that he *can* visualize the killer's motives and actions. So it's photographic recall, but also "psychic" , because obviously he uses it to "create" scenes he's actually never personally viewed. It's shown so much better in the television series.

This scene is referenced in the 6th episode of Season 1 of the TV series when Miriam Lass realises Lecter is the Chesapeake Ripper when she sees the Wound Man diagram in his office and realises that Lecter copied the diagram to kill the hunter Jeremy Olmstead. But instead of getting stabbed and nearly gutted like Will did Hannibal geabs Miriam from behind chokes her into unconsciousness,cuts her arm off and then when she regained consciousness he forced her to record a message to Jack Crawford saying she didn't know where she was and didn't want to die. Season 2 then revealed that Lecter had brainwashed her with therapy techniques and made her believe that Frederick Chilton was the Chesapeake Ripper and the man who had kidnapped her instead of him. Hannibal then imprisoned Miriam in a pit and sent her severed arm to Jack with a note saying "What do you see" Jack later found Miriam in the pit which was planned by Hannibal and then framed Chilton as the Ripper by killing Dr Abel Gideon another serial killer and planting his body along with Ripper evidence in Chilton's house. And when Chilton was arrested and Miriam was brought in to identify the man who kidnapped her Lecter's brainwashing made her believe it was Chilton and she shot through the glass of the interrogation room hitting Chilton and apparently killing him.

Confidence of getting away with it for so long, or confident that he can sway the investigation where he wants. I’m going to sound bad here but how I see it is being a serial killer is like any job kinda thing, u can be amazing at selling cars for example but your going to make a few mistakes and lying is so tricky, I sell cars which is why I made the comparison and u might think car salesman are just liars an cheats , it’s not the case Cos if we lie it always comes back to haunt us, it’s best to be honest or in the odd situation let people assume an answer, in the movie he obviously has at least some say in the investigation but if he had said “maybe the killer is eating them” Ed Norton looking in that book wouldn’t have meant anything at the most he would have thought it’s part of the investigation. It’s easy to know people lie when they lie but if the lie has at least a piece of truth it’s not that easy, that’s my take on it anyway , if I’m honest I don’t thing lector would have cut to precision and varied the M.O just to throw the investigation off, sometimes being imperfect on purpose is better than being perfect , the fact that u can do that is a far far better feeling , I play snooker , I’m not great but I’m ok but I really enjoy playing and if I win all the time my friends aren’t going to keep playing . Iv drones on for ages there😂 hope it helped

3:22 I am vexed by that messy ballpoint pen star in that beautiful, leatherbound tome. That's not like Lecter at all. Consider his carefully crafted correspondance. The precision of his cooking, and the deliberateness of everything else he does. He MIGHT perhaps have written sweetbreads like that, with a dash of rushed artistic flimsy just to please himself, but frankly it's a stupid and needless trail to leave and it is inconceivable that he should need to leave himself af written translation of a famous french dish like ris de veau, which he has probably ordered in french restaurants many times, especially seeing as he is perfectly capable of reading the rest of that book. Who is that writing for? Certainly Lecter with his expansive memory palace does not need such base reminders. This is hamhanded, contrived screenwriting. I am vexed. Terribly vexed.

@@raksh9 First - my initial critique stands: Hannibal would never write such a sloppy entry. Secondly - if it is hamhanded screenwriting (which it is, speaking as a professional) it would also be a hamhanded, vulgar and overly obvious move for Hannibal to make. Will "almost had it" and Hannibal responds "it'll come to you" = There is no need for the book. Besides - Hannibal is, after all, clearly unpleasantly surprised that Will caught on to him and it will anger him later in the cell to the point where he almost loses his composure ("then by implication you think you are smarter than me since it was You who caught me"). Hannibal did not know will would come around - it was a surprise visit sparked by a sudden undeveloped hunch. Consequently Hannibal had no time to plant a book of undergraduate clues even if he wanted to. He also did not know that will would make the Cannibal link, because that happened to Will through a series of coincidences that finally sparked his "artistic imagination". All this time they have been working on a profile that would help throw off the FBI. Killing an associate in your office at such a time is a huge risk to take. Even if Hannibal ultimately wanted to eat Wills brave little heart and expedite him painlessly out of genuine appreciation - this is bad timing. It is almost sloppy. Hannibal is not that. But he was caught unawares for once, due to his "disadvantages". If anything it is something in Will that pushed him to come around so that the answers would emerge from his unconscious. Anyway - the writing and the staging is bad because it's just simply out of character on so many levels.

@@whynottalklikeapirat It's the classic "plot contrivance" you see in fiction. Honestly, the book should have been in English. That way, it still makes sense for Will's brilliant deductive skills to figure out Hannibal was the killer, and it doesn't make Hannibal look stupid by scribbling the English translation onto the page, for a presumably non-francophone like Will, to figure out Lecter was the cannibal.

Then hannibal goes on to say that he has always suspected graham was "more akin to artistic imagination" Highlight being that hannibal had always suspected this. Graham went on to say "it doesn't make sense, your the best forensic psychiatrist i know, and somehow this never occurred to you. No wonder hannibal stabbed him lol. The writer for the movie didn't do a very good job.

The funny thing is that I always felt that this scene was omitting some sort of context. I haven't read the book so I don't know how it played out on page, thus I don't know if this was how it happened.

I don't see how putting two and two together from a flash back that involved a murder victim and a turkey that is being cooked, has anything to do with being able to "think like a killer" He just said himself that they had the "profile all wrong" lol. Maybe i should get the book, i'm sure they dive into the profile's they are building a bit more in depth.
@seamusburke6399 жыл бұрын
+Alan C The part I think they botched in this version is that, at the character's core, Graham is someone who can get into a killer's mind and see from their point of view. Norton plays them off more like regular epiphanies, which isn't as interesting.

My bias, but there has never been a good movie adaptation of this book. I’m a fan of Thomas Harris’s writing and the way he conveys the story in the book has never matched up on screen for me no matter who was playing the characters.

We need an ending to Anthony as Lecture....I think Hannibal was underrated as a sequel. I have watched it numerous times, and although there is an alternative ending in which Starling runs away with him, a conclusion to the original story where he cuts off his hand (or maybe just severs a few fingers) would be great. Harris hasn't written an ending but I think there's plenty to explore and an opportunity for a huge wtf ending to the trilogy. Looking forward t the Saw X movie in October too.

I can see why people shit on Red Dragon, but it's hard to take anyone seriously as a critic when they like the flat, insipid television series. It was the worst interpretation of the novels; it's simply desiccated of anything substantial and panders to audiences with charming pornographic violence and cheap wit.
@nathanm.76886 жыл бұрын
How rare, to find a KZbin commentator with taste... and you're absolutely right, of course. The television series was Hannibal distilled for millennials, exchanging subtlety for zingers and the sort of bloody spectacles one finds in a SAW film. Friends of mine who dabble in pretension praise the tv series endlessly and it's all I can do not to gag.

Edgy. 🙄 Also, 'intuition,' when it's actually accurate, is really just the conscious mind reaching a conclusion from data the subconscious mind has noticed. Then there's the other kind of 'intuition,' the kind which isn't accurate, and is really just make-believe rooted in emotional bias. I'm sure that's your kind.

Am I really the only person on the planet that finds Ed Norton a terrible Will Graham?
@TheBlackSpiral9 жыл бұрын
***** I just don't think he fits the role at all. Ed Norton, I mean. He comes across as a plain cop, and sometimes even like a boy scout who's severely out of his depth whenever he talks to anyone. As for the other two-, I like both interpretations for different reasons. Although I have to say that, at times, some of the dialogue in the Hannibal series feels like pontification to me.
@HouseMDaddict9 жыл бұрын
TheBlackSpiral Ed norton feels too much like he's just saying the lines and not acting. He doesn't really embody the character of Graham. He and hannibal are supposed to have been working together for a bit and yet there is like no chemistry between them. You would think people working together would be more familiar with each other.
@TheBlackSpiral9 жыл бұрын
HouseMDaddict I like Ed Norton as an actor-, he's fantastic in Fight Club and American History X. But yeah, I agree. He just doesn't suit this role. And to be honest, I don't know if it's the writing, or a lack of chemistry. I don't know if another actor could have worked better for the role in this particular movie. Seeing as Hannibal got more emphasis in this version and it might just come down to directing. But yeah, by far my least favorite interpretation of the character.
@HouseMDaddict9 жыл бұрын
TheBlackSpiral Yes, he's a good actor in general but I think he looked the part but the chemistry or something wasn't there. And yes, hannibal was more the focus with will taking a pretty much back seat so I guess he was more a place holder than anything. I can't see anyone else in that role doing much better give the whole feel of the movie but the character was definitely off.
