A lot of Carlisle people have a very insular small town attitude i like to call it a seige mentally due to the city being bounded on almost 3 sides by the M6 which you only cross to go shopping in Newcastle. Carlisle may be a city, but it's got a very small town mentally & feel for a city, I was born in Workington left when I was 19, went to Carlisle college in the 80's, couple of years ago came for a long weekend, stayed in the hotel opposite the train station, it's boarded up now, my friend & myself went out in the evening, place full of chavvy drunks & just reminded me why I left West Cumbria, looks pretty but wouldn't live there, only nice thing about it is the Cathedral and the Castle.
