I'm in climate zone 7B, but more importantly, I'm further south at latitude 33.17 degrees, so longer days, and later frost. I planted carrots in July, and will do another succession crop in about two weeks when my beans are done. I also have turnips and snow peas growing. This weekend I will be doing seed starts for lettuce, endive, kale, and Chinese Hilton cabbage. I will also sow seeds for spinach, swiss chard, Japanese Red Giant Mustard, Mizuna, Tatsoi, Boc Choy, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, beets, and radishes. I have hoops over all of my raised beds, and will be covering them with greenhouse plastic to extend the growing season. I should be able to grow through December, and maybe through January and February. Then the cycle begins again.

Awesome! Sometimes I wish we lived further south. But I think I would miss the winters, I actually like a little snow.

what's crazy is that NYC (latitude 40.7) is also considered zone 7b even though we get frost mid-November. Must be the hot summers
@jaytoney30072 жыл бұрын
@@Violinna Climate zones are divided into coldest winter temperature zones in 10 degree increments. Climate zone 7B is average coldest day is 20F. Latitude relates to daylight hours. The further north you are, the longer your days are in the summer. I've been north of the artic circle where it doesn't get dark at night. Which is why crops tend to grow better up north. In the fall, winter, and early spring, it is the opposite. The closer you are to the equator, the longer the daylight hours are. So, in the south, crops can be grown later into the winter, but I have to protect them from frost and freeze. Because of the longer daylight hours, I can overwinter, and still grow plants inside unheated low tunnel and high tunnel greenhouses without using grow lights. I can even grow some varieties of tomatoes that have small fruit, cherry tomatoes, Tom Thumb. and Early Girl. in the winter months. That is next year's project.

My arugula seedlings came up in 2 days, the Wild Rocket in 3. I love it. Kale was close behind, with Parsley at 1-1/2 weeks, which i expect to use more next year, if it doesn't go straight to seed. I'm on the border of zones 7A/7B, so parsley in ground is often "evergreen".

Heads up for the smart pots, they SUCK in 7b! My plants dried out so fast in this heat! My hard pots did a WONDERFUL job holding the water for longer! Now, if you’re in a place up north, or deep west like CA, use them. But for extreme weather and situations, just use the dirt below you. Amend the soil if you must, but it’s better to put them in ground!
@StoneyAcresGardening2 жыл бұрын
Where do you live? I'm in Utah and we have been over 95 degrees every day since mid June. My smart pots are working equally well as my hard sided pots and don't require any extra water.
@MrJaxparadize2 жыл бұрын
@@StoneyAcresGardening OK. I have smart pots I used in CA. I used them religiously and they worked well! I moved out here last year and they didn’t do well then, I decided to try them again this year and guess what, for 42 crazy days with over 100! I even tried the shade thingy 20%, a lot died. Now, to compare I did put the pots, regular and smart side by side, same plant. I had to stop watering the reg pot because it was drowning while the smart pot was bone dry. It has died since and the other plant recovered after I stopped watering. I did increase the water but it just was t enough. It sucks because I have more than 2 dozen of them. I used to live in an apt. I love plants! I wish they still worked but this is a different environment all together. Unless, you can give some advice on how to better use them. I would appreciate that a lot! I spent good money in these things! Lol!

Talk to me about what type of surface they were sitting on? Ground, grass, concrete, deck? I will say mine do best with some afternoon shade.

You probably need to mulch the containers too. I put mulch on top of everything. It inhibits weeds and retains moisture. I’m in 7a and the grow bags work well for me because we would get rain once a week throughout the summer. If I had regular containers I think they’d be too wet all the time.

What is the purpose of burlap, anything else you could use? Thanks in advance
@StoneyAcresGardening2 жыл бұрын
The burlap holds the moisture in the soil and shades it from the sun to help the seedlings germinate quicker.

You won't get a harvest this year if that is what you are looking for. Instead you would be overwintering. I prefer to plant potatoes early in the spring.

@StoneyAcresGardening2 жыл бұрын
The green house will protect the plants and allow you to harvest longer, but to get full sized plants you really need to get planting soon or you will run out of day length. Once we hit 10 hour days plants pretty much stop growing, even if they are protected in cold frames.
