The concept of tipping is very interesting and changes so much depending on where you are in the world. In India, tipping is almost always optional, and there are no expectations of a "minimum tip" like we do here in the US. It took me quite a while to get used to the concept of tipping being an expected (or mandatory) gesture when I first moved to the States. Having the 15%, 20%, 25% tip suggestions show up on my bills was bizarre. Your servers in restaurants are keen to kick you out as soon as you've eaten as they make most their wages from tips - this was super annoying. On the other hand, when you go to Europe, you are never expected to tip. So you can order a 3 Euro coffee and spend hours chilling in a coffee shop or a restaurant. In Japan, tipping is considered offensive. Now my 101 before traveling to a new place: check out what electrical plug type I need and make sure I know what the tipping culture is.

Throwing the PPP metric down in the drain are we? There would be a good gap in income between the top and lower rung of middle class anywhere, including US. But a good meal is the almost the same cost there because of various other reasons, not just dollar strength. Think of the countries with high cost of living but weak currency, it depends on a lot of factors. Also, we have to think about the cost of labour, the type of product we are buying etc etc.

The practice of not letting the guest pay is deeply ingrained in us since childhood. Even when relatives come visiting and we're out for food, the host will be the first one to literally snatch the bill before the guests can even see. It's common practice not letting the guests pay. And the more dear guests are, the more insisitent the host is on paying. That's why stupid babies didn't let you pay much here.

It depends. If I was a tourist someplace in India and staying at a nice place, if I was provided with a driver who drove me around the day in the city I would probably also tip him 500 rs. However, if its like a normal Uber ride which was say, Rs 500 I would at most tip 50(if I would tip) at most(most people would not tip Uber or taxi or maybe they would just leave the change). For Indian standards tipping 10% for anything is being very generous. Normally people just leave the change or a small tip(tipping is optional). That's just how it is. Uptill about 14-15 years ago my family used to do the same as well but later we kind of adopted tipping between 10-20% depending on the experience because we realized we should do it as we were privileged and its the decent way.

India is an odd place right now - it's boiling in between the traditional doctrine of dharma and karma and the modern era capitalistic "greed is good" ideology. Unless we're hungry or helpless - the training since childhood has made it very a very clear distinction between gifts and handouts - taking anything you're not owed is bad karma, and it'll cause you nothing but unrest. Cash is never good, it's a handout, so accept gifts with humility, but never handouts. And yet I have to accept - this isn't something everyone can afford to think like, but it's always in there somewhere. So most Indians are very hesitant in taking money that isn't theirs. Same goes with having a guest spend money under ones care. It's just the tradition to not do that. I honestly believe India is going to find it's center and regain balance again, and do it soon.

In some places in North India (UP esp) gulag jamun and rasgulla are both called rasgulla, distinguished by the colour (brown rasgulla vs white rasgulla believe it or not, lol). I grew up like that and had to go through much grilling later, haha.

In India, it’s almost criminal to let a guest pay for food if they are visiting you, even if it’s your relative. I remember this incident whr I’d been to a classmates house and was v hungry so she called for food and made me pay for it, it’s been almost 20 years that this incident took place but till date if I ever mention her name my mom recalls her as “the one who made me pay for food at her house” ..... so if that’s how it is for ppl living here, u can only imagine how it’d be for u. There’s no way in hell anyone’s letting you do that.... I think ever!
