My heritage is also German. My Mom taught me to put the Sauerkraut at the bottom of a dutch oven then layer brats and/or hotdogs, alone with boneless porkchops, then she would take hamburger cook it up along with rice then boil cabbage leave and wrap the hamburger mix shaped like small meatloafs & layer that on top. The last layer would be a mix of some type of dumplings (either bisquick or find one online). These dumopgs were put on top right before everything was ready to eat. It's a "heavy'' meal that she would fix on New Year's Day.

I hate grocery shopping & am terrible at cooking. Just imagining having to feed 12 people every day, several times a day stresses me out. It's hard enough doing that for myself. I often just... eat an apple/peanut butter or crackers & cheese. I don't know how you do it! (But I know that God gives us the strength & ability to do what He has called us to do.)

I have an idea for something you’re family might like. Inspired by a receipt the British royal family cooks made for the children. 2 lbs of ground beef 1 good size onion 1 carton of liquid beef stock Worcestershire sauce Butter Flour Garlic Basil Oregano Parsley A few bay leaves Cheese Mashed potatoes Peel the potatoes and cook till soft. Then mash the potatoes with what you like in mashed potatoes. In a large pot or frying pan cook the ground beef and onion till the ground beef is fully cooked then remove from pot or pan. Remove grease. Add butter and melt then add the flour and make a rue once you have a nice rue add about it half the stock and mix well. Then add the onion and ground beef back to the pot or pan if there’s still room in your pot add the rest of the stock. Add the garlic, parsley, oregano, basil to taste and add the Worcestershire sauce to taste. Add the bay leaves. Bring to a boil and let it cook till the stock becomes a gravy. Stir often to prevent sticking. Remove the bay leaves. Place the meat mixture in baking pan let cool a few minutes then top it with the mashed potatoes. Add some cheese to the top and parsley for colour cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 to 60 minutes depending on how long it takes to heat and melt the cheese. Can be made a head of time and cooked later.

Saute some bacon, onion and apple slices in a pot. Add some chopped garlic. Dump sauerkraut in pot. Add some bay leaf, a couple cloves and fresh ground nutmeg. Cook on medium high until liquid boils. Turn to low and cook as long as you want. We usually do the saute stuff and dump it all in a slow cooker to cook all day. We use maggi in ours but not everyone has it. You can add beef bullion for more seasoning if needed. Grill brats or bake in oven. You can serve whole or cut them up and put in kraut. We make mashed taters with it.

Another thing you can do to stretch your sausage for breakfast burritos is to add ground turkey. I make them for us and I do 1 lbs turkey to 1 lbs to sausage. So for a large family like yours maybe 3 lbs Turkey to 2 lbs of sausage. I also add peppers, onions, dice up potatoes and add eggs(egg to tortilla ratio) then cheese on tortilla add mix and make burrito.

I have five boys aging from 25 all the way down to nine we go through at least three boxes of eggs from Walmart every two weeks so what I’ve been doing with their breakfast burritos is frying up some potatoes and adding that in with the eggs and the sausage and that way I don’t have to use as much eggs and the kids get full faster.

Recipe....I'm half German and my whole family layers sauerkraut with brats in a casserole. Sprinkle caraway seeds and celery seeds on top, water with beer until kraut is peeking out and bake uncovered until beer evaporates and kraut still a bit juicy. Serve with stout mustard and a salad! ( or potatoes...or green beens... etc) 😁

My stepdad is Polish so sauerkraut was a staple side at the table. He cooked a lot of different stuff to go with it. One of the yummiest ways was to put kielbasa and kraut in the crockpot, cook all day Then we'd all have it on crusty rolls, maybe some mustard😋. Super simple to put together and cooks itself.

I live in the middle of Ireland, farmers markets are common plus we get a lot of veg from our neighbour who grows it and we always find an assortment of veg thrown over the wall when he is in his Greenhouse. Our local butcher is hilarious, if you want beef on Monday he will tell you that he ain't killing the cow until wednesday. But mostly we buy a whole animal and we get it butchered and delivered, (a whole lamb is 150 euro) so you need lots of freezer space. My daughter went to the States last year on a J1 visa and was ill for the first few weeks because of the salt content. Anyway my point is that fresh veg is always available and 70 dollars is outrageous, now I understand why people say you have to have money to eat healthy. That haul of fruit would cost about 20 euro.

I am German and we cook a lot, and I mean A LOT with Sauerkraut and trying to be creative and not just doing the old mashed potatoes, Sauerkraut and Bratwurst. I like to put them in buns, similar to hotdog ones but made with sourdough or like a pretzel one. It is super yummy. Or, even easier, as a bake. I do it with beer but you have children so you can use apple cider instead for the zing. Mustard is a key ingredient. You can also do it with buns but I eat it without carbs. Hope you have fun. I adore your channel.

I felt that $70 is high as well. I pay about 30-35 cents a pound for bananas, $4.00 for 10 pounds of oranges, mandarins are around $1.10 a pound and apples around $1.20ish a pound. These prices are rough as I had to convert from kg into lb and my currency into her.

Brats and Kraut I brown the brats or grill and then cut up. I sauté onion and bell peppers (usually red or orange) then strain the kraut and add to sauté pan let it cover the bottom and let it cook for at least five min and then add sausage back and mix all together. I ALWAYS season with salt pepper and OLD BAY seasoning. So yummy and goes a long way

A suggestion for making Stove Top feel a bit less ‘generic’ and more special while keeping it simple. Every year I end up using it simply because my mother gets stressed out over the dinner even when I’m doing all the cooking, not her. To make her happy I use Stove Top, but to make me happy, I always use chopped unsalted nuts (slivered almonds or chopped pecans) and I add lots of fennel seed and lemon peel along with onions and garlic. All easily added to the pot, keeping it simple but adds a lot of flavor! Everyone stay healthy and safe! I love how the older kids help out with your meal prep days. God bless and protect your family and our country!

I'm Italian, but I have a recommendation for your brat and sauerkraut meal. Lol. My mother was a chef and everyone loved her sauerkraut. Use a large pan or Dutch oven and brown your brats in a touch of olive oil. Remove and set aside. Add a bit more oil to the pot and saute your sauerkraut adding lots of black pepper as you stir it. When it's heated through and has a lightly golden hue add your sausages back on top, add a little beef broth (about a cup), cover, and bake for about 30/45 minutes on 350. Love your channel.

Hi, Sarah, Just curious....how many times do you run your dishwasher on an average day? Also, on average, how many loads of laundry do you wash every week (counting clothes, bedding, towels, rugs, misc., etc.)? Many thanks!

I don't know about the dishwasher but laundry she has a video on it.. 2, 3 loads a day. Dark and lights plus other household stuff(towels, blankets, washcloths etc.depents on the day) Idea is to have empty baskets in the laundry room at the end of the day.

I wish you gave more detail on the potential food shortage in the upcoming year, rather than just say it and have your viewers in an unknown frenzy. For those that are curious, the food shortage is expected to be within food banks; not necessarily your local grocery stores’ inventory. Food banks have seen a large increase in demand this year, for obvious reasons, and the demand is predicted to only increase in the upcoming year. With brief research, I was able to read a few articles that spoke about the lack in funding for food banks; both governmental and community based. Therefore they are facing a food shortage and are struggling, and will continue to struggle, to feed these families who need their assistance. Please do more research everyone, before you start panic buying!!!

I have been hearing about food shortages for the past couple of years, and that was before this year. Weird weather and Covid have made it worse due to growing, storing, and production issues. Prices will go up and availability will decrease. I have watched videos of lots full of people waiting for food donations ...people waiting for hours and hours. Job loss and homelessness will also continue to increase.

to all the people roasting rocket7697.... they are probably young and don’t realize that “brats” are actually food , and are genuinely confused and thinking that they are referring to the children as brats. sometimes we just need to keep our thoughts to ourself , and move on. not every situation needs you to attack someone when it could simply be confusion on words they aren’t familiar with.

We went and did once a month grocery shopping and meal plan for October for our family of 3, not only did it save me money and time, it made my life so much less stressful! Even when we didn't feel like what was planned, I didn't have to come up with something on the fly, I could just pick a different meal off the calendar. I don't think I'm going back to weekly/biweekly planning and shopping
