I love Andreas shop with me videos. As a mother of 10, I'm in awe of how in tune she was to her families needs. It's one thing to be a stay at home mum, but to do it well and know you're children's needs as well as she did. Was just mind-blowing. She never appeared to miss a thing. It's shows how emneshed she was with you all. 🥰😍 I'm glad to see you guys are doing well. Love from Australia.

Andrea, I love the considered and well worded responses you have provided to questions in this discussion. Of note, I have been a devoted Anti-Walmartite for years; mostly due to some personally shared stories about local businesses trying to work with the chain and negotiate fair contracts as vendors, but also their whole sourcing chain as pertains to often working with vendors who use sweatshop labour practices. Of late I have come under fire for that personal shopping philosophy as being elitist, as surely only people who could afford high costs elsewhere can have that opinion, but even in my own mind as it gets harder and harder to make ends meet for our family of 6. Thank you for providing the links about sweatshop economics providing a way out for communities, countries, and, a cause near and dear to my heart, the plight of women; they were a very compelling read. I have some thinking to do.

Ohhhh the poor deer. So sad, my Grandad lived in an area where deers, sheep and rabbits might jump in front of you at dusk or in darkness. He always told us as sad as it would be to knock one down, it would be far worse if anyone in the car was killed. So he would try his best to avoid them of course but unfortunate accidents happen. I'm pleased all of you were safe! God has taken care of the deer. Enjoy your 4th July celebrations. :)

I'm so sorry that you hit the fawn. Deer just seem like they don't have depth perception. A few years ago, just outside of Johnson City, I hit a little squirrel, not more than 80 miles from home. Bert and I was headed west for a vacation. I cried so hard. I must have been 48 maybe. I had previously hit another squirrel when I was about 25. Cried then too. Close to the end of that vacation(ending at Colorado Springs), a mule deer was just standing out in the middle of the road, daylight hours, and it jumped over my car when we were at a standstill and I cried about that too. Even though Bert was driving. The next day at 0400 we headed home. We got home at 0200 the next morning.

It's so sad to kill an animal. I hit a rabbit once and I still remember what it felt like going over it's little body. In this case, I saw the mother and was watching her because I thought she might run back out into the road. Just as I was satisfied that she was going to stay put, I turn back and there was the baby!

Fun fact, I too just bought a new whisk because the handle broke off the old one. Also, I totally relate to your deer story. I've never hit a deer (thank goodness) but I cry every time I hit anything more than a bug. The worst thing ever was one time when I ran over a stray kitten that was in our driveway. I was nearly inconsolable for the rest of the day. I'm really sorry you had that experience but glad that you had your family with you to comfort you (except maybe for Solomon :-) ). And finally, I love that you always take us home. It makes it feel a lot more like a shared experience and less like just watching from a distance. You're the best.

When I was first trying to move to the once-a-month Walmart trip, I don't think I made it through the first several months without needing to go an extra time. It takes time to learn any new skill, even learning to think through and plan for everything coming up on the calendar. I still viewed it as a success because I was still making progress toward fewer shopping trips.

Hi Andrea! I love watching your shopping videos. I live in CA and in my area plastic bags are actually illegal. Is it common for people in your area to use plastic shopping bags? Have you considered switching to reusable bags? I know when people go to big stores like Walmart or Costco it is possible to just have all the products loaded up into large cardboard boxes and with many helpful hands at home it wouldn't be too hard to unload. Looking forward to hearing from you! :)
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
I have a lot of reusable bags I made and have used a lot, but I'm honestly not worried about it, even though I'm _supposed_ to be. :) Reusable bags are responsible for a lot of food-borne illness and are a hassle in the checkout line when you have as much stuff as we get at one time. We already get as much stuff as we can shipped to the house. I've got 12 large cardboard boxes sitting in my office at the moment that I need to empty and dispose of because our order started arriving today. There will be more boxes to follow. I'd much rather have a dozen plastic bags to deal with, especially since we reuse most of them for trash bags. As with most things, the debate on which is best is far from settled. Tom is a California native and we see how they're usually one of the first places to use the force of law to "win" the debate. Here's a quote from an article on the topic (reason.com/archives/2015/09/01/plastic-bags-are-good-for-you), "Far from being the environmental threat activists make them out to be, plastic bags are not particularly to blame for clogged sewers, choked rivers, asphyxiated sea animals, or global warming. Instead, they are likely our best bet for carrying all of our junk in a responsible manner. Don't believe the haters. Plastic bags are good for you." (I in no way am calling _you_ a hater, I'm just sharing why I'm glad to use plastic bags.)

I try to put all the cold stuff together in the van so I can find it easily when I get home. On this trip, Thomas helped me carry everything in that night. Hi Andrea, I have a question for you. I have watched your videos from the start of your channel until now and I love them. You remind me so much of my grandmother (when she was young) you look just like her and you are also as calm, sweet and gentle as she was. Las week I googled your name and I saw that your maiden name is Schelling. Is that true? My grandmothers mother was a Schelling, Lena Schelling and she had a brother Hendrik Schelling that moved to the USA and he had 3 daughters (I think they lived in Montana or Wyoming) and my grandmothers brother moved to the USA too (Billings, Montana) his name was Piet (or Peter) Zoeteman. He had a son Elmer. Do you know any of them? Are we somehow related? It would be so much fun :) Greetings from the Netherlands.
@TheMillsFamilyVlog7 жыл бұрын
How fun! Yes, my maiden name is Schelling, though Papa Gary (Schelling ) isn't my biological father. I wouldn't have any blood relation myself, but I suspect my family is probably related to yours. My dad's family is from the North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming area. I don't know of any of those names in particular, but when Dad, Grandma and Grandpa come over today I'll ask them. Small world!
@marjoleint35927 жыл бұрын
Small world indeed!! Schelling is a real Dutch name and comes from the town Old and New Beyerland, near Rotterdam. My mom said that a lot of Schellings (our family) moved to Grand Rapids MI too and a part stayed in Wyoming.

Leah Beck, I think it's similar to the beginning of the industrial revolution, when so many people were "forced" into working in factories. We forget that for all of them it was a choice: a choice to get off the 24/7 slog of the farm, make actual money and have a future. That's my concern about our culture/media: it only focuses on part of the story. The key is: are the "victims" acting of their own free will or not?

What? No venison? We live out in the country and see dead wombats here all the time. The most traumatic thing we have seen is stumbling across a car that had hit a tree and it burst into flames, killing the driver almost instantly. There was about 5 other cars there and they were all screaming and crying saying "he's dead! he just died!". The guy was a 42 year old sole occupant of the car. Thankfully my husband didn't stick around as we had our 9 young kids in the car. but there was no way to avoid the scene. And nothing else could be done. Not a sight I would reccomend seeing. 😭😭😭

You killed Bambi!?! Sorry, just giving you a hard time. I would have cried too though, so sad :( Sometimes there is nothing you can do about it though. My brother in law took out a mama duck and all her babies on the freeway. He was going too fast to do anything by the time he saw them.
