I think this is the first time I've ever seen a family come to that decision on this show (and I've been watching since it aired live on Animal Planet). Very courageous of them to put the dog's well-being above their want to keep her.

I agree! There are people who were condemning them and said how can you be selfish and just give up on a family member like that and blah blah. I think it’s SOOO much kinder to realize you don’t have what it takes to give this dog the best life. I hope Molly is doing good ❤
@burnished2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. I seriously hope they find her a great home, some dog breeds are just not good matches for certain families/people. Its far more important to find them the best place they can be than keeping them unhappy and destructive.
@isasantos85772 жыл бұрын
There was that family with two dogs: one old, getting blind and very lovely who they had since it was a little puppy, and a young one, very destructive, that they basically would keep outside, living next to the pool and basically neglected. They started training with both and had progress, a very good one actually, but they recognised they would always see their senior dog as their priority, and since the young one was neglected and would be violent with the other dog, they decided to find a new home for it and focused completely in give good quality for the other dog last days.

You can tell that even though they meant well and wanted the best for Marley, they lacked enthusiasm during training. Their faces were skeptical for all the sessions until the last moments filmed, and even then there was doubt, not in Marley, but in themselves and whether if they can keep up with her. It's valid to admit that. I have a rescue pit/staffy mix and she requires daily running and training, a lot of time and dedication. I love her with all my heart and would never give her up, but it's totally valid to admit you simply can't dedicate that much time. Hopefully Marley went to someone who can give her the exercise she needs! She looks so much like my pup

Also the dog probably needs a high energy active family with the time and drive to do all of that training. It's a big time commitment.

I really felt for them and for Molly. I have been there. We rescued what we thought was a corgi/beagle mix but ended up being a Staffy/Pit/Basset mix. We loved her dearly but she was way, way more energy than we were prepared for. In addition she her and our cat were a recipe for disaster. We spent hundreds, if not thousands, on enrichment toys, chews, and specialized training. We were utterly exhausted and yet still knew we weren't fully meeting her needs. In the end we realized we could either keep on going, barely getting by, or we could find her the life she truly needed and deserved. It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make but I knew I owed it to her to find better for her. She now lives with an very active couple who have two other high energy dogs and several acres of land. We get updates all the time and she has really blossomed since being with them. It is never an easy decision but sometimes you have to see past the stigma of 'rehoming' and make the best decision for your pet.

Hope the dog get a good family and will be very happy

Very true, and sometimes it comes down to the individual dog. Even in higher energy breeds not every one will be energizer bunnies and there will be those who are energizer bunnies and then some. As someone who has pet rats, I can confirm, this is exactly what a giant rat would do. With rats it is not a matter so much of lack of physical activity, although that can worsen it, but it’s more that it is actually a very healthy, natural, essential part of their life, it’s an instinct for them and it can be detrimental if they DON’T chew on anything. With dogs it is pretty much solely a sign of anxiety.

They should have gotten a low-energy dog if they wanted to leave it at home for long periods. Like a pug or a French bulldog. I have a FB/Boston Terrier mix and he's somewhat active, but an hour of exercise every day is enough to keep him happy and calm. Just a game of tug or fetch, which can be done inside the house, is ideal especially for small apartments. For this family, making the decision to find a new owner for Marley was the best one. You can see during the sessions that they weren't too enthusiastic about going through the training. I hope she finds the perfect owner for her.

High energy, determined dogs aren't for everyone, they really need people who can match their energy. They realized they're not the best family for Marley, which I know is hard on the family and it'll be hard on Marley but it'll be for the best for everyone in the long run.

Marley reminds me of my pit/Queensland mix. So. Much. Energy. Super high prey drive. Smart a d affectionate, but very naturally impulsive. Thankfully, my dog isn't destructive, but that has a lot to do with knowing in advance how energetic and busy, not to mention smart, she was likely to be based on her lineage, so I started from day one with tons of puzzle toys, appropriate chew toys, and safe distractions/outlets to prevent her from ever developing a taste for furniture or shoes. We also have a small indoor agility set, which she enjoys, and a tennis ball launcher for wearing her out. However, I would never trust her with a cat, ever, as the terrier prey drive is stronger than my faith in her training. It does make her a natural though for nose work, as that desire to seek and hunt also makes her quick to pick up and follow smells. I adore bully type dogs, and in my experience they are some of the most affectionate and people-focused breeds, but you definitely need to know what you're getting into with such energetic animals.

Our staffie does exactly the same with poking his head into every garden and around every corner of a fence/wall. And I must admit it gives me quite a bit of stress. We are very lucky to live near a forest so he only needs to walk +- 10 mins past homes. After that he is super calm and the walk is enjoyable. He often responds very well to a simple "come" whe he does see a cat. But just today (after a pretty intense encounter) we were wondering if maybe we could use a squeaky sound to distract him. We walk him for +- 3 hrs a day btw. He really is the best of boys I ever did meet but if we could make him less reactive to cats that would just make part of the walk more relaxed so we're going to try that now.

Ahhhh, we need an update… what happened to Molly, I’ve never seen this before. She was such a smart dog! You have to know what kind of dog you’re getting, too many times ppl choose them to make a statement, they aren’t social credit, fashion accessories or for your ego. I feel ppl would go to the Humane Society or other rescue, and have that explained to them, but often they make it too hard to get a dog. For instance, over the years I’ve paid for dogs to be fixed and vaxxed, but they see that and assume I get but don’t keep them, despite me explaining that they weren’t mine, n that it wasn’t true, so I’m just saying they can be unwelcoming n intimidating.

If my dog was destroying things when left alone that would be the first thing I tried, along with calming and busy things to keep her occupied in a productive way while I was gone. But this family was just so checked out, I think they thought that Victoria was going to perform a miracle and completely change the type of dog that she is, which isn't possible. I'm glad the decided to give her up, and hopefully the new family can give her all the love and attention she needs.

@hallaloth311210 ай бұрын
You can see this decision coming from the start. No enthusiasm at all even with the initial walk, much less the agility. And honestly, no apparent concern for the stress their dog shows when they go out. It doesn't seem like a 'brave' decision to me. . because honestly, they don't show much emotion or attachment for the dog at all. I don't think they are bad people, but I don't think they are pet people who would connect with an animal like someone who is. At the end of the day, I'm glad they did the right thing and found her a good home.

They did everything Victoria wanted them to and taught them. They kept it up as well. You don't know what their work schedules are like, their social life, what the daughter's plans are (she's 18 and will likely be moving out soon), etc. You know nothing about what went into their decision. You just have your own judgmental attitude based on things you know nothing about. There was nothing wrong with their body language whatsoever when you take into consideration cultural differences. Also just because someone comes to the decision that a dog doesn't fit their family doesn't mean they don't want it. They clearly want to keep Marley and would love to but they have their own limits that just don't fit with what the dog needs. If they didn't want to keep her they would have just gave her away and not called for help.
@RandomFosterKittens2 жыл бұрын
They look like they are exhausted. I have fostered dogs like this and barely coped, and I have a lot of empathy for this family. They care, but they don’t have the resources, skills and energy, to train this dog. Whoever gave them that dog didn't care that it was a bad match and everyone suffered. They should look for an older dog who wants nothing more than to cuddle on the couch and a walk around the block.
@vanclemmons2 жыл бұрын
@@RandomFosterKittens exactly! Honestlt, I think giving a high maintenance dog to a family with 2 kids (and possibly only one parent?) is a huge mistake. That’s an insane amount of work even if one child is already a teenager and capable of doing things on their own.

Because outside of the US, it's not generally seen as a viable solution to lock a dog in a crate for hours. Besides, the reason she destroys stuff is because they didn't train her to be able to stay alone and because she's bored out of her mind. Crating her would solve the problem for the humans but in this situation, it would just be cruel.
