First time someone had working trailer brakes, ever! Haha

Lol I had always put the pin in for the brakes when backing. Never could figure out why I had 5 pins but I had bought the adapter and used it with the boat.

With that many closed portions of the ramps, there’s plenty of places to dock your vessel and go get your vehicle.

The reason you don't see trailer brake problems is because people in So.FL. don't believe in them. If this guy goes to a friend or shop to get his fixed they'll probably remove or disable them.

On surge brakes, if the solenoid isnt installed, it doesnt matter what pin/plug you have connected. My trailer didnt come with 1, and it doesnt have a way to pin the toungue in place. Both of which have now been corrected.

Hydraulic surge brakes can be set up with a large enough spring in the surge mechanism that whatever is being towed is being compensated for during those times when say a tow vehicle is just idling down a hill... with the weight of the trailer being resisted by the spring so that it does not activate the brakes.... otherwise just going downhill at idle would have the surge brakes activated.... I burnt the grease out of the wheel bearings before I realised that the surge brakes on a hired camping trailer DID NOT have this spring fitted....and I was idling down a 4 mile gradient.... This backing with a trailer without any weight on it would be an ideal example of the light weight of the trailer NOT activating a well-weighted surge spring setup...

Surge breaks are the worst. So annoying, better than nothing for sure, ya dang Floridians😂 They really are a pretty important to have. Electric breaks can get dunked all day long and not give a dang. The way they work is pretty cool, simple, but cool.

I grew up in South Florida and on weekends just for Entertainment My Dad and i would bike ride to our local Public Boat Ramps BTW you are correct on dropping the tailgate to see your trailer i also came up with another plan i installed PVCpipes that could fold Vertical and Horizontal on my trailers in the up position i could see the centerline of my Trailer and in the Horizontal position the boat would sit on the Bunks over them they do sell a much more expensive set up very similiar with Springs now instead of my manually operated Inexpensive Idea for those people too lazy to get out of the drivers seat

I have a tonneau cover on my truck and can not see anything so I attached some bicycle flags to each fender so I can see when I’m backing up once the boat is loaded I bend them to the rear and use a small rubber coated tie and attach it to the rear boat tie downs

hmmm don't most if not all modern SUVs and pick-ups have back up cameras these days anyway? I think short wheel based truck especially coupled with a stubby little tongue are just a PITA no matter how you look at it. Practice with a garden tractor & trailer. And a 6 pack 😂 I don't have that kind of patience, my yak trailer has a boat sized tongue😅

Backup camera works great to back pwc trailer. Both my vehicles have one...as do all new rigs less than about 7 years old
@JohnSmith-yv6eq10 ай бұрын
Have a folding to the side extended trailer tongue just for boat launching/retrieval on ramps. An extra 10ft of tongue and coupler would make a lot of difference to maneouvring the traler and to not dipping the truck ass far down the slippery ramp. Once towed out the extending tongue can be folded down and the main coupler hitched up...

@@JohnSmith-yv6eq 👍🏼 now that sounds like a perfect solution not only for backing up pw trailers. Added bonus for keeping your tow vehicle out of the saltwater, the salty air is hard enough on trucks without dunking them into the drink every day twice a day!!

Why do they put their trailers so far in the water?
@SSgtRobertMorris9 ай бұрын
The one guy didn't have any rollers. Just two bunks for the boat to ride on top of. He had to get it deep enough for the boat to be able to float over them. Some trailers are all rollers, others are varying combinations of rollers and bunks

Properly designed and working surge brakes should not actuate (regardless if the trailer is plugged in or not) when backing up slowly.
@kenlink566710 ай бұрын
Wrong. When the tow vehicle pushes the trailer at all the brakes actuate. As they do whenever the trailer pushes the vehicle. I’ve built a few.
@howarddittrich15710 ай бұрын
@@kenlink5667 Hmm.. I’m wrong you say. Had to look into it, here is what I found. In the old days (over 30 years ago), when I was designing brake systems, surge brakes only actuated when the force overcame a spring load in the trailer tongue. That spring load made it possible to slowly back up on flat ground or down hill. Backing up a hill was difficult or impossible with out locking out the surge brakes. That said, newer surge brakes have a solenoid that stops the surge brake master cylinder from activating the brakes when energized. That is new to me. So yes, on these newer systems you are correct and I’m wrong. Thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick.
@kenlink566710 ай бұрын
@@howarddittrich157 I still have two of the old units (one new) that had to be pinned to reverse. Should sell them as I’m getting too old to build more trailers. 😢
