This game is maybe the ultimate accomplishment of aesthetics over technical limitations. It has a completely consistent visual design that gives it a cinematic comic book feel, while still working within the need to only ever have, like, 50 polygons onscreen. It really can't be overstated just how mind-blowing this was in 1991, considering it could run on incredibly low-powered systems like the SNES or a 286 PC. ('Low powered' in this case referring to the CPU, since the way OOTW was designed it couldn't take advantage of Mode 7 or any of the other specialty hardware of the SNES used to work around its very weak core processor.)

Flashback is another great game like this one. This game was made by a single guy and has a great documentary about it. Also, yes it was rotoscoped Mike. Love the show fellas.

As someone who really loved Another World, Heart of the Alien, Heart of Darkness and the Oddworld series. I've tried several times but never could get into Flashback, unfortunately. Just something frustrating about the controls and unintuitive gameplay.

Another World is rotoscoped, but it doesn't use traditional sprites, the reason why the game was easily ported to various consoles is because the engine was an executable progam that rendered all of the games assets as vector graphics at any resolution, so each element you see moving in the game is actually a polygon distorting, which is why the game has a flat artstyle to it.

The cutscenes (even the one with the car) were filmed by a camera, rotoscoped, redrawn on a graphic software, encoded into 2D polygons and compressed to fit on 2 Amiga diskettes (the whole intro only takes 64 KBytes). And only one person made the whole game, except for the music. That makes this game even more unique. Check the "making of" Another World on KZbin. Oh, and the alien language is a fictive one, "Amasta" doesn't mean anything.

You guys should also play Flashback: The Quest for Identity by the same developers, Delphine Software. I would recommend the Sega Genesis version, as even the creator of the game says it's the best one, although the Sega CD version is damn good too.

I remember playing Flashback on the PC. The 3D 3rd person one. Man, there were so many ways to die lol. The midi music was great too. I think they released it on the Playstation, which was way better than playing on my old 486 PC xD!

There's a behind-the-scenes video that comes with versions of the game now (usually released under the name Another World) that gives you a glimpse into the development of the game. Eric Chahi even still has the gun and soda can that he used when filming the intro. The graphics are comprised of polygons, which is really interesting when you consider some of the hardware that this game runs on. The SNES version is one of the worst versions in terms of performance, in my opinion, but it's my understanding that the publisher cheaped out on the cartridges, so performance ended up being much more limited than was originally expected. I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to use a SuperFX chip at some point, but that didn't happen in the end.

For anyone wondering, yes it was rotoscroped. Basically, the developer invented his own program to make this game, and he retraced segments using polygons. You can even find the original video for 6:50. There is a documentary about it and the guy still has the props for it. Go watch it.

The most impressive part of the SNES port of "Another World"/"Out Of This World" is that it is rendered, audio and video, entirely in software. None of the SNES's hardware acceleration was utilized while running the game.

Try the Sega CD version it is the superior version. There is also a sequel to this game and i think the Sega CD version has both games in 1 disc. It is called "Heart of the Alien" and is the best thing to own if you like Out of this World. I would also like to point out the game "Flashback the Quest for Identity" on any console, but this game too is superior on Sega CD and is the same genre of game as Out of this World. Most of the multiplatform titles that were lucky enough to get a Sega CD release are superior versions of all of them. I know the Sega CD is shit on a lot because of the FMV games but if you just pretend those games don't exist you are left with a pretty decent library for the 16-Bit era.

Heart of the Alien is a terrible game. It plays every bit as poorly as this game does with abysmal trial-and-error gameplay, but on top of that, it also has an incredibly unsatisfying ending to Lester's story and to the whole "Another World" universe in general and an even worse soundtrack and presentation style (which was arguably the only thing this game had going for it to begin with). As for Flashback, that was slightly better but still only just barely playable by today's standards.

This was one of those obscure games I played as a kid that nobody else had ever seemed to even hear of. I usually got stuck at the cave flooding section, but one time I made it past that and got all the way to the tank section, but had no idea what to do and died. From what I've seen on KZbin, I was actually pretty close to the end.

Another World is a constant try and error game, and the SNES version is slower than others. It proposes a narrative style based on levels design and facts (like the foreground action in 12:04), but the try and error ruin the game.

I think the graphics were usually a little better for games on the SNES, sound can go either way depending on preference, but Genesis would usually run games better since it has a faster processor I think.

This game is amazing. It was one of my favorites. Absolutely not one word spoken throughout the whole game, but you could tell what was happening just by the action, body language of the characters, cutscenes and background/foreground action you can't control. Like your friend being chased right after you shoot that guard when you get outside again at 12:00, there's a lot of that. Even before going in the "sideways tunnels with the steam", if you stay right under your friend and that guard before dropping down, you'll see their feet move as if they're fighting. The camaraderie between Lester and his alien friend, the quest for survival. Simply amazing. The end always left me perplexed to say the least and always wondered if they could have made a sequel. Hell, a movie could be made about this story and I would love it! That part with the water in the cave, you just have to run like mad and run-jump (not stop and jump, you won't make it like that) all the holes you come across if I remember correctly.

BTW, it's worth mentioning that newer re-releases of the game on modern platforms are made SIGNIFICANTLY easier by introducing a lot more checkpoints. It doesn't change the core gameplay, but it's a lot less frustrating - particularly in those goddamn underground caverns - since there's a lot less repetition of tasks as well as better signposting when you're doing things in the right order. The big problem with the caverns, which they didn't touch on, is that there are multiple paths and multiple things to do, but only one sequence which actually allows you to succeed. So doing the right things, in the wrong order, still leads to death. With only one checkpoint, at the beginning, it was originally an incredibly unfair trial-and-error challenge that very badly needed rebalancing or better clues to the player for how to proceed.

I was never able to get past that level! you get that gun but its only get a few rounds before thats depleted and I was never able to find any more ammo! the only thing i remember about the story (kinda ironically) was that the main protagonist was suffering from some kind of mind wipe

there is a terrible remake on xbox 360. stay away from that. You should look the playthrough just a little bit enouth to make you keep going. This was a pretty cinematic game for its time. Its really great to unravel the story on your own. greetings from Brazil

It's tricky because the animation takes a bit to complete, because of the rotoscoping. But your approach to that section is the right one.
