Claire and Jaime did treat Fergus like their own son. The scene when Fergus returned from the battle field all shaken up after stabbing the man, and Claire hugged him and felt his pain like her own; that's a mother love.

Fergus is so loyal he doesn't even question it...some people get mad, like Jaime's sister...they are like "how dare you leave and not write us" blah blah but Fergus is just the same loyal lad he always was...just happy to see her. He's like a loyal puppy or something but I feel like it really speaks for his character because he's so positive. Everyone else in the world are always lying, scheming, blaming, but good old Fergus always has Jaime's back and the kid is smart asf too. idk if anyone noticed but he's extremely perceptive and intelligent especially for an uneducated orphan. He's my favorite character on the show, although I didn't realize this until like season 4. I shed a tear when Jaime gave him his last name, and also when Jaime called him forward at the fiery cross to swear loyalty to him.

Book Fergus' reaction is even more genuine. He doesn't recognise Claire at first, but when he figures out who she is, he falls down on his knees in front of her, half-sobbing. He basically says the same sentences, but hell... that was so powerful to read.

I feel sorry for Fergus. He was "adopted" by two people who said they love him like their own son and then they both promptly exit his life! Sure, Jamie was there in his cave for seven years but that doesn't count.

They were together as a family, not just an adopted family, but a real family for 2 hard but wonderful years, and then his parents decided to make the ultimate sacrifice for their children. His mother was forced to leave to protect him and his sister, which I’m sure he partially blamed himself for her “being gone” since he was sent away from Culloden and unable to protect her and then was told she died there. Jamie intended to be a good role model for his son one last time and keep his word to fight and die in the losing battle, and when body survived his heart was gone with Claire. However, Jamie surviving and being able to be a part of his son’s life was no small thing. Even if he was living in a cave wallowing in grief for years, he still got to see his son grow up, teach him many things, and although he wasn’t with him every minute like he would have been he was still there, something Claire would never get. When Fergus got hurt, it reminded Jamie that he still had someone to fight for, his small piece of Claire, their son, and sacrificed himself again not only to keep him safe from further harm but to provide for him in his absence. When Jamie returned and they were together again, he bought a print shop and taught him the printing trade, among other things, which he loved and ended up becoming a printer himself, and brought his mother back to him. Plus, Jamie’s unfortunate marriage to Leirogh introduced him to his future wife Marsali. Had Jamie truly “exited” Fergus’s life at Culloden, he wouldn’t have his parents, his wife and children, the trade he loves, and know how to be in the world.

I get that it's a risky move, but it irks me that they would not trust Fergus with the truth about Claire - he's not likely to scream 'witch' or declare them both crazy. Murtagh knew and it was fine. The same goes for Jenny, she could tell they were lying about Claire's whereabouts and it ruined their relationship.

I don’t think they ever explicitly tell Fergus, but I know Roger figures out that Fergus knows and has always known that something is definitely different with Claire, Brianna, and Roger, and when Roger asks him if he knows who and what they are he essentially says he has a basic idea but that’s good enough for him. He never questioned his mother’s unique ways, and I’m sure he never will. They do tell Jenny and she freaks out and calls Claire a witch.

Haaaaaaaa I'm sorry I dont want to be THAT person maybe in the show it works realy well but I love how the reunion took place in the book as well as so many other moments so much better. In the book Claire meets him in the brothel she and jamie stay in. Fergus sees her and instantly falls to his knees, hugs her waist crying,"m'lady youre alove its a miracle" repeating m'lady over and over again. She doesnt recognize him and misunderstands the situation thinking hes a customer confusing her for one of the prostitutes until he stands and she sees his face. And in the book his missing hand is replaced with a hook. I think that would be more useful than a bronze hand. 😞 in his line of work with jamie it would have made him more intimidating. And when she sees his hook it was while fergus was working hastily with jamie. Its a shock that is only addressed with a quick explanation and sheepish smile because of the lack of time he had. But it reinforced how much she missed during her time away because something so shockingly as a missing hand is old news that is brushed aside like,"yeah its a bummer brb"
