Clayton Hollingsworth stepped outside the box in 2017 and debuted the OutLaw. The OutLaw is a fully independent suspension Rock Bouncer front and rear and features a SuperCharged LS Engine. This monster made short work of a lot of hills this year and won several event. We compiled all of our videos of this beast into one for you guys to enjoy!

I started watching this sport this past spring, about the time the Outlaw started running well I guess, and while I always enjoy seeing Tim Cammaron, the Bacons, Jake Burkey, and just about everyone else, I have found myself rooting for Clayton. From what I've read, the IFS/IRS setup has been tried by others and it didn't hold up to the abuse. Well it seems that Clayton has figured some things out. And with more seat time, I think he will learn to control that beast a little better. I would bet we see some copies show up next season.

looking at this rig it seems as though he took an R/C car and decided to build it in real life. Engine is where the battery pack would sit and he is sitting in the place of the electric motor.

Hey thanks Cole for this compilation. Really pulled it together too with all this great documentation work. You need to put together a patreon, so some of us can fullfil our need to reciprocate you for this awesome entertainment. Would love to see you get more extensive gear. We want boom cams and in cameras and hill cams and multi drone 360 VR! lol. Also congratulations to Outlaw and his driver. Absolutely hands down the greatest rock bouncer to date. I also was thinking there is much more development potential with independent suspension that could be tried in a rock bouncer. For example, if you built the suspension to articulate from the outside you could have a metal cage protecting the suspension and wheels from rolls, etc. Or you could make the suspension articulate from both the inside and outside, like a box structure around the wheel. It would be indestructible then. You could even go as far as mounting tall enough tires for it to run upside-down... make it sprung both ways and you could literally continue driving after a flip or roll. Anyways keep always being a little different man like you said. Btw can I ask why the new buggy went to solid rear? Do you think it will affect handling?

I never thought about the comparison until I just saw the recap of the 4-wide racing event. But the Outlaw is almost like a trophy truck or Baja 1000 rig, minus the solid rear axle. It soaks up all the whoops and dips, and does great on the rock bouncing, but I think the variable of not having a solid axle that reacts/bounces the same every time makes it more difficult to get a hold and feel in that control. All that said, Clayton frickin killed it all season in that beast. Great job filming it all bro.

Yet another great MadRam video! I've always wondered if the added weight and complexity of a fully independent suspension would prove to be a competitive advantage and actually last long enough. This vehicle answered the question. I gotta' ask - who makes the IFS/IRS differentials?
@MadRam11
@MadRam11 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, the center sections are Currie 9" housing and the suspension is all home made
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. At 3:05, I saw what appeared to be the bolt pattern used on Ford 9" rears, where the entire ring and pinion assembly can be removed as one unit (aka 'Pumpkin') from the housing. What most intrigues me is how to minimize the width between the CV joints. Some additional bearings are needed to support the loads imposed at the CV joints. Currie did a great job. Also, kudos to Mr. Hollingsworth for building a suspension robust enough to handle both the track and the number of rolls he took, yet drove away, apparently undamaged.

It seems like it has some serious toe-in and some torque-steer. Maybe it is set up this way on purpose? I'm sure there is some effect from have the engine mounted to one side.
@MadRam11
@MadRam11 6 жыл бұрын
yeah it toes in hard, not sure if it is on purpose or not.
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 6 жыл бұрын
Here is one possible reason why the tie rods are a shorter length than the A-arms, and consequently, causing toe-in/ bump steer. If you're riding a motorcycle and lean to one side, the wheel carves a turn in the direction you're leaning without actually turning the handlebars. The same thing applies when a car has launched, is partially airborne, but leaning so only one side momentarily has ground contact (or at least solid ground contact). Adding some toe-in would partially compensate for this. The tie rod geometry also influences the Ackermann angles when steering, although the Ackermann effect is normally only important on surfaces with good traction (i.e. pavement). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ackermann_steering_geometry

Is there a reason that other rock-bouncers don't adopt this asymmetrical driver/engine setup? It's obvious that it has a lower center of gravity which is central to making a good rock-bouncer. All of the other vehicles look like skyscrapers in comparison.
